Baseball<\/a> in Mid May,\u00a0 Maryland was through its regionals, the private schools were mostly done, DC was still finishing the regular season, and Virginia was just starting up its District (aka &#8220;Conference&#8221;) tournaments. \u00a0Lets see where we stand now after the Memorial Day weekend and a slew of tournament results.<\/p>\n<p>Text in Red are pending results, mostly from the southern Virginia districts and regionals, which don&#8217;t have to start as soon as Northern Virginia tourneys.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the Virginia Conference champions, regular season and tournament.\u00a0 All these playoff brackets, if they exist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">are at this link<\/a> at VHSL.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t re-link all the playoff brackets per district\/region below.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A North Region<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A\u00a0Conference 5\/Concorde<\/span>: <\/strong>Chantilly regular season champ.\u00a0 Seeds held to form in the district tourney and Chantilly met Oakton in the district final.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-brian-eckert-madison-shut-down-fairfax-for-conference-6-crown\/2015\/05\/22\/1b9bac9a-009d-11e5-833c-a2de05b6b2a4_story.html\">Chantilly beat Oakton 2-1<\/a> to take the district title.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 6\/Liberty<\/strong><\/span>: McLean regular season champ.\u00a0 #5 seed Fairfax upset McLean to make the District final, where they met Madison.\u00a0 In the district final, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-brian-eckert-madison-shut-down-fairfax-for-conference-6-crown\/2015\/05\/22\/1b9bac9a-009d-11e5-833c-a2de05b6b2a4_story.html\">Madison avenged an earlier loss to Fairfax to win 2-0<\/a> at home to take the title.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A\u00a0Conference 7\/Potomac<\/strong><\/span>: Lake Braddock regular season champ.\u00a0 #2 and #3 seeds Annandale and West Potomac were both upset and knocked out of Regional competition.\u00a0 Lake Braddock met #6 seed South County in the district final and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-brian-eckert-madison-shut-down-fairfax-for-conference-6-crown\/2015\/05\/22\/1b9bac9a-009d-11e5-833c-a2de05b6b2a4_story.html\">beat them easily 12-4<\/a> to win the title.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 8\/Cedar Run<\/strong><\/span>: Patriot regular season champ.\u00a0 Battlefield <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/battlefield-baseball-forfeits-win-over-osbourn-park\/article_0d84d330-fe1c-11e4-bdc8-b76702c6e5d3.html\">had to forfeit<\/a> its semi-final win over pitcher innings\/pitch count limits, so Osbourn Park made the district final, where it subsequently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/may-prep-baseball-roundup-op-beats-patriot-in-eight\/article_e38c5160-0074-11e5-96bb-dfa8818a8fb6.html\">beat Patriot in extras<\/a> to win an unlikely district title.\u00a0 Battlefield&#8217;s forfeit was absurd; their starter <strong>Jake Agnos<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2015\/05\/21\/jake-agnoss-21-straight-strikeout-performance-ends-in-battlefield-forfeit\/\">struck out 21<\/a> *straight batters* in the 6-1 victory &#8230; and then resulted in a forfeit loss.\u00a0 Agnos gave up a lead-off homer &#8230; and then retired the next 21 guys he faced.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never heard of such a feat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6-A North Regional Qualifiers (in seed order).\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2015-6A-north-bracket1.pdf\">6-A North bracket<\/a>.\u00a0 Play begins 5\/29\/15.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 5\/Concorde: Chantilly, Oakton, Herndon, Centreville<\/li>\n<li>Conference 6\/Liberty: Madison, Fairfax, McLean, South Lakes<\/li>\n<li>Conference 7\/Potomac: Lake Braddock, South County, West Springfield, TC Williams<\/li>\n<li>Conference 8\/Cedar Run: Patriot, Osborne Park, Battlefield, Stonewall Jackson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quick predictions for 6-A North regional tourney: I like Madison, Oakton, Patriot and Battlefield, since they were basically the best 6-A teams all year.\u00a0 But do not count out Chantilly or McLean.\u00a0 Thanks to their district forfeit, Battlefield drops to a #3 regional seed and a headache for a higher seeded team.\u00a0 And McLean&#8217;s upset loss dumps them to a #3 seed as well in the region, despite besting perhaps the best 6-A baseball district in the regular season.\u00a0 With the draws out, Battlefield faces Oakton in the first round, which is tough.\u00a0 If seeds hold it&#8217;ll be Lake Braddock-Madison and Patriot-Chantilly in the regional semis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A South Region<\/strong><\/span>: which is mostly big-time schools in Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach area. \u00a0But there are just enough schools in Woodbridge proper to form a 6-A conference closer to DC with teams that are typically considered for All-Met rankings.\u00a0 Because 6-A&#8217;s regional is only 8 teams, their district tournaments are not yet complete as of the time of this posting.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 1\/Coastal<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First Colonial (aka <strong>Mark Reynolds<\/strong>&#8216; alma mater) regular season champs.\u00a0 They were upset in the districts but still qualify for the regionals.\u00a0 In the district final, Cox claimed the second regional birth with a win over Ocean Lakes.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 2\/Monitor Merrimac<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Western Branch regular season champ.\u00a0 However #2 Grassfield got them in the district tourney final.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 3<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Franklin County (Rocky Mount, south of Roanoke) regular season champ.\u00a0 In the district tourney #5 seed Cosby scored three straight upsets to claim the district title, beating Thomas Dale in the final.\u00a0 Cosby made the State semis last year and is looking to get back after an up-and-down regular season.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A Conference 4<\/span>: <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forest Park (Woodbridge) regular season champ.\u00a0 Forest Park also won the district tournament, beating Colonial Forge 10-2 in the final.\u00a0 Colonial Forge had upset #2 seed and perennial powerhouse Hylton in the district tourney semis to claim the 2nd regional berth.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6-A South Regional Qualifiers (district finals 5\/29\/15)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6-A Conference 1\/Coastal:\u00a0 First Colonial, Cox<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>6-A Conference 2\/Monitor Merrimac: Western Branch, Grassfield<\/li>\n<li>6-A Conference 3: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cosby, Thomas Dale<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>6-A Conference 4: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forest Park, Colonial Forge<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quick predictions for 6-A South regional tourney: Western Branch is the only team in the state getting national attention, and they&#8217;re ranked #1 in the Hampton paper&#8217;s local rankings.\u00a0 So I look for them to claw their way to the state tournament.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A North Region<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 13\/Capitol<\/strong><\/span>: Marshall regular season champ.\u00a0 Seeds held to form (with Marshall beating Lee by the astounding score of 21-0 in the district semis), and Marshall met Edison in the final.\u00a0 In that final Marshall beat Edison 4-1 for its 10th straight win.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 14<\/strong><\/span>: Stone Bridge (Ashburn) regular season champ.\u00a0 In the playoffs, 1\/2 met in the final and Stone Bridge beat Broad Run for the district title.\u00a0 In the 3rd place game, Briar Woods grabbed the 3rd regional bid.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 15<\/strong><\/span>: Mountain View (Stafford) regular season champ.\u00a0 In the playoffs Mountain View and Potomac (Dumfries) met in the finals, where Mountain View <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburg.com\/sports\/baseball-roundup-north-stafford-wins-conference-consolation\/article_a4eded12-0423-11e5-8ea7-e3aee5b8e563.html\">pulverized them 10-0<\/a>.\u00a0 In the 3rd place game, North Stafford easily grabbed the 3rd regional bid.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 16<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Halifax County regular season champ.\u00a0 They met #2 seed Patrick Henry in the final and Patrick Henry upset Halifax for the district title.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5-A North Regional Qualifiers (in seed order): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2015-5A-north-bracket2.pdf\">5-A North regional bracket here<\/a>.\u00a0 Play begins on 5\/29\/15.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 13\/Capitol: Marshall, Edison, Stuart, Lee<\/li>\n<li>Conference 14: Stone Bridge, Broad Run, Briar Woods<\/li>\n<li>Conference 15: Mountain View, Potomac, North Stafford<\/li>\n<li>Conference 16: Patrick Henry, Halifax County<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quick predictions for 5-A North regional tourney: I like Stone Bridge to repeat, Marshall could be a challenger.\u00a0 They are on opposite sides of the draw and could both make the regional final.\u00a0 But non-DC area teams like Patrick Henry and Mountain View could be challengers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5-A South Region<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 9\/Atlantic<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kellam (in Virginia Beach, aka <strong>Ryan Zimmerman<\/strong>&#8216;s alma mater) regular season champ.\u00a0 Kellam was upset in the district tournament, with Princess Anne claiming the 2nd regional berth by winning the tourney.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 10\/PenSouth: <\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hickory (Chesapeake) regular season champ (also defending 5-A state champ).\u00a0 Hickory advanced to the district final along with Menchville, who upset 2nd seeded Great Bridge along the way, before Hickory claimed the district tourney as well.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 11<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deep Run (Glen Allen\/Northern Richmond suburb) regular season champ (Freeman, last year&#8217;s 5-A state finalist, was 2nd in the district).\u00a0 The two teams met in the final with Deep Run getting the double.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 12<\/strong><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Manchester (Midlothian\/Southern Richmond suburb) regular season champ.\u00a0 Clover Hill took the district title and the #1 seed in the regionals.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5-A South Regional Qualifiers (in seed order): (district finals 5\/29\/15)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 9\/Atlantic: Kellam, Princess Anne<\/li>\n<li>Conference 10\/PenSouth: Hickory, Menchville<\/li>\n<li>Conference 11: Deep Run, Freeman<\/li>\n<li>Conference 12: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clover Hill, Manchester<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quick thoughts: hard not to believe in the pedigree of Hickory and Freeman; I fully expect them to meet in the regional final.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Smaller Virginia Classifications<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> with Northern Virginia ties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A North<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A conference 21<\/strong><\/span>: Woodgrove regular season champ.\u00a0\u00a0 Woodgrove also won the tourney, beating Sherando in the district final (both teams move to the 4-A North Regional).\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A Conference 22<\/strong><\/span>: Fauquier regular season champ and tourney champ, beating Eastern View in the final.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3-A East Region<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>3-A Conference 27<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">: Kettle Run regular season champ, Culpepper #2.\u00a0 They met in the tourney final as well, with Kettle Run taking both regular and post-season district titles.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>3-A Conference 28<\/strong><\/span>: Loudoun Valley (regularly in the AllMet top 10 rankings) regular season champ.\u00a0 They also took the post-season tourney, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/multimedia\/photo_galleries\/loudoun-valley-baseball-shuts-out-john-champe\/article_a0a88820-06c1-11e5-922b-f3986eafce91.html\">beating #2 seed John Champe<\/a> in the final.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2-A East Region<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2-A Conference 35: <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Strasburg continues its local dominance, winning the district again.\u00a0 Falls Church&#8217;s George Mason (easily the smallest public high school in the Northern Virginia suburbs) was the #3 district seed but advanced to the district finals to face Strasburg.\u00a0 Strasburg took the tourney final, but George Mason advances to the regional tournament.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Maryland<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the state finals results in Maryland, played the week of 5\/18\/15\u00a0 Brackets here at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpssaa.org\/2015-baseball-state-semifinals-on-deck-for-tuesday-519\/\">MPSAA website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=476\">4-A States<\/a><\/span>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">State Semis were <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perry Hall v Severna Park, Gaithersburg-Wise.\u00a0 Severna Park and Gaithersburg each dominated their state semi to force a high-powered showdown of good teams in the 4-A final.\u00a0 In that final, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/anthony-felitti-pitches-gaithersburg-to-first-maryland-4a-baseball-title\/2015\/05\/22\/e3d3f12a-ff1e-11e4-833c-a2de05b6b2a4_story.html\">Gaithersburg beat Severna Park 5-3<\/a> at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen for its first ever state baseball title.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=475\">3-A States<\/a>: State semi finalists were North Harford (Plyville in North Maryland), Mt. Hebron in Ellicott City, Chopticon (way down in St. Mary&#8217;s county) and Urbana (just south of Frederick).\u00a0 In the state-semis, Mt. beat Riverdale Baptist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most private schools&#8217; seasons are now complete.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Liberty Christian &#8230; apparently the school had an open lawsuit against the Virginia High School League (VHSL) regarding membership, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/news.rel-2015-vhsl-lca-settlement-announcement\">VHSL settled on 5\/20\/15<\/a>.\u00a0 The implication?\u00a0 Quoting the link, &#8220;<em>all non-boarding private schools in Virginia will be permitted to apply for membership in the VHSL<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Liberty Christian Academy will now join the 4-A conference 23 (which covers the Lynchburg and Charlottesville area) and can compete for state titles in all sports.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if this ruling will lead to the various private schools in the Northern Virginia Area (including typical sports powerhouses such as Paul VI, O&#8217;Connell, Flint Hill, Bishop Ireton, etc) leaving the WCAC and joining the public schools.\u00a0 I doubt it frankly; even the largest of these schools would be dwarfed by the 5-A and 6-A enrollment public high schools, and the WCAC is a fantastic league.\u00a0 InsideNova had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/vhsl-membership-offer-unlikely-to-impact-local-private-schools\/article_3c227fa8-007e-11e5-84e2-ef4a21932b4a.html\">piece on the topic<\/a> quoting several area ADs of private schools (including Paul VI&#8217;s <strong>Billy Emerson<\/strong>, a class-mate and longtime teammate of mine), who think perhaps this ruling makes it easier for teams to schedule
