significant failed signings, no arguing in the press with\u00a0<strong>Scott Boras<\/strong>, etc. \u00a0 Lets recap our 2015 draft class.<\/p>\n<p>As noted by <strong>Chelsea James<\/strong> in this NatsJournal piece, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/nationals-journal\/wp\/2015\/07\/21\/nationals-signed-30-of-40-draft-picks\/\">Nats signed 30 of their 40 picks<\/a>, including all their top ten and 18 of the top 20 picks.<\/p>\n<p>They saved roughly $700k of their top10-round bonus pool, only having to go over slot for one top-10 round pick (<strong>Koda Glover<\/strong>, who perhaps not coincidentally was the first 2015 draftee to be promoted to full season ball), and transferred that bonus savings to two big over-draft picks in later rounds (13th rounder <strong>Max Schrock<\/strong> and 34th rounder <strong>Tyler Watson<\/strong>).\u00a0 This essentially meant that they were able to acquire the equivalent of an extra 3rd and an extra 4th rounder thanks to bonus San Diego.<\/li>\n<li>High Schoolers picked in rounds 35-38 (<strong>Montes, Bush, DiPuglia<\/strong> and <strong>Morales<\/strong>) are committed to respectively South Florida, Westmont, Western Kentucky and Stetson, all opting to go to school.<\/li>\n<li>40th rounder <strong>Quinn<\/strong> is commited to Hofstra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The big signing surprises for me<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Schrock<\/strong> in the 13th round, though he got paid like an early 3rd rounder.\u00a0 So perhaps it isn&#8217;t that big of a surprise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watson<\/strong> in the 34th round, though again he got paid like a mid 4th rounder, so maybe it isn&#8217;t that big of a surprise either.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DiNatale<\/strong> and <strong>Jefferies<\/strong> both signing despite being such low picks; both were college juniors at big programs who could have gone back to school.\u00a0 Somewhat surprising picks.\u00a0 Given that any bonus figure below $100,000 in the 11th round or later does not need to be reported, it is possible that both guys got $100k (which is about equivalent to a 10th round pick) and opted to sign.<\/li>\n<li>That the team signed *any* of the guys it picked in rounds 31 and above; they got 4 of the 10.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Was this a &#8220;good&#8221; or a &#8220;bad&#8221; draft<\/strong><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p>I was on record quite clearly that I thought our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9587\">2014 draft was a failure<\/a>.\u00a0 This led to my posting a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9594\">huge missive doing analysis on *every* draft<\/a> class and determining whether it was a failure or a success.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still not sold on 2014 a year onwards; <strong>Fedde<\/strong> is going to have to turn into an all-star to make up for the rest of the deficiencies of the class.<\/p>\n<p>So how does the 2015 draft class look?\u00a0 Unfortunately, in my mind, probably not too great either.\u00a0 We had no 1st rounder.\u00a0 Our two second rounders both project as good field\/no hit center fielders (thought to be fair, <strong>Stevenson<\/strong> is hitting .360 in Auburn).\u00a0 I like <strong>Wiseman<\/strong> but he has holes in his swing.\u00a0 <strong>Rivera<\/strong> has gotten shelled so far in Auburn.\u00a0 I think the team got some good deals on <strong>Glover, Schrock<\/strong>, and <strong>Watson<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some of the college arms are really looking good at Auburn (<strong>Bourne, Peterson, Gilbeau<\/strong>).\u00a0 So we&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Good links for the draft<\/strong><\/span>: that i&#8217;m constantly using.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First <a href=\"http:\/\/m.mlb.com\/news\/article\/130246508\/2015-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker\">10 rounds of bonus figures<\/a> from MLB.com<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/events\/draft\/y2015\/drafttracker.jsp\">MLB Draft Tracker<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1pZpAxtq3K6SxrHb6YSe3_NF6Cay0MkeYwW1Dc2_KHrE\/edit?hl=en#gid=0\">Nats Draft Tracker xls<\/a>, maintained by &#8220;springfield Fan&#8221; for years<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectgame.org\/\">PerfectGame.org<\/a>; the best place to look up prep kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The July 17th signing deadline has come and gone, and the Nats had a relatively quiet signing period.\u00a0 Little drama, no significant failed signings, no arguing in the press with\u00a0Scott Boras, etc. \u00a0 Lets recap our 2015 draft class.
