Photo via the Houston Chronicle.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Old news now, but for the first time ever players have taken a Qualifying Offer (QO).\u00a0 In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2015\/11\/three-players-accept-qualifying-offers-16-decline.html\">three took it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3 accepting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Colby Rasmus<\/strong>; <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.nbcsports.com\/2015\/11\/13\/its-official-colby-rasmus-is-the-first-player-to-accept-a-qualifying-offer\/\">technically the first to take a QO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brett Anderson<\/strong>: somewhat surprising to me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2015\/11\/brett-anderson-accepts-qualifying-offer-from-dodgers.html\">he took the offer<\/a>, but not a bad idea since he gets to stay with a playoff team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matt Wieters<\/strong>: pretty surprising <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/news\/wieters-accepts-orioles-qualifying-offer-return-16-200121726--mlb.html\">that he took it<\/a>, given who his agent is (<strong>Scott Boras<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, a 4th player signed an extension before being forced to make a decision<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marco Estrada<\/strong>: who gets a <a href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/5f1bb687cd904ec8b6ff4b0dcb7698a7\/estrada-and-blue-jays-agree-26-million-2-year-contract\">massive pay raise<\/a> to stay where he is and not have his FA market completely shredded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=11520\">QO preview post<\/a>, I thought that 5 guys would have been crazy not to take the QO.\u00a0 Two of those such players are listed above (Rasmus and Estrada).\u00a0 The other two (Anderson and Wieters) were slight surprises but make sense in hind sight.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, both Nats candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/nationals-journal\/wp\/2015\/11\/13\/ian-desmond-jordan-zimmermann-reject-qualifying-offers-become-free-agents\/\">rejected the deal<\/a> but neither should have their market affected too much.<\/p>\n<p>As for the rest of the players, I think the player who is making the biggest mistake is <strong>Ian Kennedy<\/strong>.\u00a0 Perhaps he&#8217;s been thinking of re-signing with San Diego all along, but of all the players out there with QO compensation attached to them, he&#8217;s the guy that seems most likely to be sitting around until after the next amateur draft in June 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Two other interesting QO links:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Current QO\/compensation pick <a href=\"http:\/\/m.mlb.com\/news\/article\/157232438\">affect on the draft<\/a>: before teams start signing players and losing picks, the Nats are slated to pick 18th in the 1st, then get the 37th and 38th comp picks.\u00a0 Now, could we see the Nats signing a QO-attached free agent and punting on the first rounder given that they have two supp-1sts?\u00a0 I could, yes.\u00a0 But we&#8217;ll see what happens.\u00a0 Frankly, having 3 1st rounders could be a nice way to re-stock the system with college junior guys who could be ready for the majors right around the time that <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> elects free agency.<\/li>\n<li>538.com analysis: the venerable 538 site has a <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/the-offer-that-mlb-players-always-refuse-even-when-they-shouldnt\/\">good piece on the QO here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, I&#8217;ve updated my <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1UEiZzwWarVP3PfCtZeYTVBqC49dmBut21O7UhB17htQ\/edit?usp=sharing\">Qualifying Offer Worksheet<\/a> online at Google.\u00a0 It is color coded per situation and has old and new contract details for the candidates to see how the QO has affected them.\u00a0 Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>Post-publishing update: a few more interesting Qualifying Offer-related posts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cauldrun.si.com&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thecauldron.si.com\/making-the-best-offer-dd8a68c8df0b#.xsx7gog56\">can we make it better<\/a>&#8221; analysis<\/li>\n<li>QOs no longer the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beyondtheboxscore.com\/2015\/11\/19\/9731906\/astros-orioles-dodgers-qualifying-offers-colby-rasmus-matt-wieters-josh-reddick\">sure thing<\/a>&#8221; bet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old news now, but for the first time ever players have taken a Qualifying Offer (QO).\u00a0 In fact, three took it. 3 accepting: Colby Rasmus; technically the first to take a QO.
