Photo: AndrewClem.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Note: Tuesday&#8217;s &#8220;rainout&#8221; of the Nats-Pirates game allowed the team to just skip Jordan Zimmermann&#8217;s start, so we&#8217;ve only got four outings in this period&#8217;s &#8220;starter cycle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Good<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Livan Hernandez<\/strong> was out-dueled for the 2nd time in a week by <strong>Anibal Sanchez<\/strong> on 5\/14 (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_05_14_flomlb_wasmlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">box\/gamer<\/a>), and took a loss in a game that he pitched pretty well.\u00a0 line: 7ip, 6hits, 1 run.\u00a0 He follows up a bad performance with a good one, as is his custom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bad<\/p>\n<p>Mediocre\/Inconclusive<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jason Marquis<\/strong> may officially have a quality start in the books for his 5\/15 victory over the Marlins (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_05_15_flomlb_wasmlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">box\/gamer<\/a>) but at least one of the two earned runs he gave up in in the top of the 2nd was really &#8220;earned&#8221; and not a result of the throwing error that put Sanchez on base.\u00a0 Its one of the many reasons that ERA is misleading in many cases.\u00a0 That being said: he went 6 2\/3, runs (2 earned), 6 hits and a walk and 2ks.\u00a0 The victory makes him 5-1 on the season and should do nothing to stem the trade rumors that are sure to start dogging him now that the season is a quarter finished.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Lannan<\/strong> didn&#8217;t figure into the decision on 5\/16, but he pitched decently enough (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_05_16_pitmlb_wasmlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">box\/gamer<\/a>).\u00a0 Line: 6 1\/3 ip, 7 hits and 4 bbs, 2 runs and 4ks.\u00a0 It counts as a &#8220;good&#8221; quality start but he was putting guys on all day.\u00a0 101 pitches but only 54 for strikes, indicated by the 4 walks.\u00a0 He&#8217;s got a 1.6 whip on the season right now and one has to wonder if a hot starter in AAA would jeopardize his rotation spot at some point in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tom Gorzelanny<\/strong>&#8216;s 5\/18 outing was hard to judge, given the weather conditions (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_05_18_wasmlb_nynmlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">box\/gamer<\/a>).\u00a0 He got knocked out of the game in the 6th, having given up 8 hits and 5 walks (2 of which were intentional, but still.\u00a0 One of the IBBs was done because Gorzelanny threw away a pickoff attempt, the other because he gave up a leadoff single that was stranded at 2nd).\u00a0 Nearly a 2.00 whip on the day.\u00a0\u00a0 But it was pouring rain most of the night and both pitchers must have been struggling with their grips and control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starter Trends<\/p>\n<p>Lhernandez\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,bad,good,good,bad,good,soso,bad,good<br \/>\nMarquis\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,good,good,soso,great,bad,good,soso<br \/>\nLannan\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,soso,soso,bad,soso,good,really bad,good,soso<br \/>\nZimmermann \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,good,good,bad,bad,good,good,great<br \/>\nGorzelanny\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0soso,good,soso,good,great,good,bad,soso<\/p>\n<p>Relievers of Note<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cole Kimball<\/strong>&#8216;s first two appearances ended with identical lines: 1ip, 1bb, 1k, nothing else.\u00a0 His first appearance was in a one-run game, his second in a 4-run outing so as to save Storen&#8217;s arm.\u00a0 Per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooksbaseball.net\/pfxVB\/pfx.php?month=5&amp;day=15&amp;year=2011&amp;game=gid_2011_05_15_flomlb_wasmlb_1%2F&amp;pitchSel=501993&amp;prevGame=gid_2011_05_15_flomlb_wasmlb_1%2F&amp;prevDate=515\">pitch f\/x<\/a>, Kimball was throwing 93, maxing at 94.9 and throwing mostly fastballs.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a massive delta between his fastball and his curve speed.\u00a0 He has 4 pitches (being a former starter) but we are only really seeing 2 of them right now.\u00a0 The fact that Riggleman immediately put Kimball into a one-run game within 12 hours of his call-up is as clear an indictment of <strong>Henry Rodriguez<\/strong>&#8216;s continued place in the bullpen as can be said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thoughts on the offense<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ankiel<\/strong>&#8216;s injury may prove to be somewhat of a <strong>Wally Pipp<\/strong> injury, if <strong>Roger Bernadina<\/strong> continues to perform has he has been.\u00a0\u00a0 His slash line as of 5\/15 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bernaro01.shtml\">.321\/.424\/.393<\/a> and we&#8217;re seeing zero drop-off with his defense, high lighted by this <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/news\/article.jsp?ymd=20110514&amp;content_id=19047396&amp;vkey=news_was&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">amazing catch<\/a> on 5\/13 (a catch that I couldn&#8217;t believe he made either).\u00a0 Its nice to see both Bernadina and <strong>Laynce Nix<\/strong> making statements and taking control of positions that they both &#8220;lost&#8221;
