of baseball, now that they&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.nbcsports.com\/2017\/11\/06\/bbwaa-awards-finalists-announced\/\">announced the finalists<\/a> for each of the major awards.<\/p>\n<p>This year, I changed the way I have traditionally written this post and\u00a0did not bother to check the pulse of the awards (or look at Players of the Month) until season&#8217;s end, since they&#8217;re generally useless for predicting these major awards.\u00a0 So no running narrative of who was &#8220;in the lead&#8221; for the MVP at the all-star break.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my predictions for how the awards will go.\u00a0 Important note: <em>This is not necessarily how I believe the awards should go, it is how I think the current electorate will vote<\/em> &#8230;\u00a0 though I do tend to believe that the MVP award in particular is not just about naming the WAR leader in the league.<\/p>\n<p>The writers have to submit their ballots at the end of the season; but Holland makes a lot of sense too.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/majors\/2017-mlb-executive-of-the-year-yankees-gm-brian-cashman\/\">BA Executive of the Year<\/a>:\u00a0<strong>Brian Cashman<\/strong> of the Yankees &#8230;who then went through a bit of a charade with the team on whether he was coming back.\u00a0 This may have been more of an award for his amazing work LAST year, when he flipped players at the deadline for a ton of prospects, got one of the back in FA (<strong>Aroldis Chapman<\/strong>) and then suddenly made the playoffs one year after selling.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/mlb\/news\/chris-antonetti-sporting-news-mlb-executive-of-the-year-cleveland-indians-2017\/1vh96v1m08z9u1e05jtxqchcss\">Sporting News\u00a0Executive of the Year<\/a>:\u00a0<strong>Chris Antonetti<\/strong> of the Indians.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.nbcsports.com\/2017\/11\/30\/nelson-cruz-wins-the-edgar-martinez-dh-of-the-year-award\/\">Edgar Martinez DH of the Year<\/a>: goes to\u00a0<strong>Nelson Cruz<\/strong>, my perennial fantasy stud.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.nbcsports.com\/2017\/12\/12\/sheldon-ocker-named-winner-of-the-2018-j-g-taylor-spink-award\/\">J.G. other awards mirror our predictions for MVP, Cy Young and Rookies of the Year above.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/securea.mlb.com\/mlb\/awards\/y2017\/mlb-awards\/\">Esurance MLB Awards<\/a>:\u00a0<strong>Rendon<\/strong>&#8216;s 6-6 day earns MLB&#8217;s best performance for 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Discussion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AL MVP<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0: I&#8217;ve got <strong>Altuve<\/strong> over <strong>Judge<\/strong> in a race that shouldn&#8217;t be that close.\u00a0 Altuve was dominant all year, holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/AL\/2017-batting-leaders.shtml\">sizeable advantage in bWAR<\/a> (more than a win) over any other AL hitter and is the heart of the best team in the league.\u00a0 Judge would be the winner had he had a 2nd half similar to his 1st half, and was the clear winner of the &#8220;Narrative&#8221; conversation.\u00a0 \u00a0However, Altuve&#8217;s defensive additions and Judge&#8217;s distinct lack of &#8220;clutchness&#8221; (he was dead last or close to it in terms of clutch hitting).\u00a0 Judge just loses out at doing what just a couple of players have ever done; win the RoY and MVP in the seam season (Fred Lynn, .\u00a0 Outside the top two, I think it could be any one of a slew of guys.\u00a0 I think <strong>Trout<\/strong>&#8216;s injury costs him in the race but he still is named on a bunch of ballots, but not enough to overcome <strong>Betts<\/strong> (who gets votes as Boston&#8217;s best player).\u00a0 I think <strong>Jose Ramierez<\/strong> should be in the discussion as Cleveland&#8217;s best hitter, but he toils in anonymity for the most part and I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see <strong>Sale<\/strong>\/<strong>Kluber<\/strong> slide into 5th.\u00a0 Also, don&#8217;t sleep on\u00a0<strong>Andrelton Simmons<\/strong>, who has become a force on both sides of the ball this year.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I did get the top 3 correct at least and feel like i&#8217;ve got the right order.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NL MVP<\/strong><\/span>: I think<strong> Stanton<\/strong>&#8216;s monstrous season (he has nearly 30 more homers than the next best NL hitter) puts him over the top in a year when the best NL teams (Washington, Los Angeles in particular) do not have dominant offensive players leading the way and making their case.\u00a0 Washington&#8217;s best WAR position player is\u00a0<strong>Rendon<\/strong>, who wasn&#8217;t even named an All-Star, and the Dodger&#8217;s best position player by bWAR is\u00a0<strong>Justin Turner<\/strong>, who isn&#8217;t exactly mentioned in the MVP talks.\u00a0 I think the 2nd and 3rd place votes go to the clear leaders of the two surprise wild card teams (<strong>Arenado<\/strong> and <strong>Goldschmidt<\/strong>), then 4th and 5th go to Rendon and\u00a0<strong>Kris Bryant <\/strong>in some order.\u00a0 Bryant\u00a0has been amazingly quiet despite continuing to be a top player and being the defending MVP; perhaps its Cubs fatigue after their amazing win last fall.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Joey Votto<\/strong> fails to get mentioned despite his amazing season toiling for the last place Reds.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I was shocked that the voters gave Votto the votes to get into the top 3; again, more evidence of the electorate getting &#8220;smarter&#8221; and appreciating the best performances.\u00a0 I still think it goes Stanton 1st, Goldschmidt 2nd, Votto 3rd.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AL Cy Young<\/span><\/strong>: Despite <strong>Sale<\/strong>&#8216;s 300 strikeout season, <strong>Kluber<\/strong> leads the league in most every pitching statistical category and should win this award.\u00a0 Sale got blasted in one of his last starts of the season, possibly changing some voter&#8217;s impression of him at the death of the season.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if the voting is really close though.\u00a0 Past the top two it could be anyone: <strong>Verlander<\/strong> stayed in the same league and caught on fire upon his trade to Houston, <strong>Luis Severino<\/strong> will get the attention of the many NE-focused voters.\u00a0 I have no idea who might come in 5th;\u00a0<strong>Carrasco<\/strong> has been great, but it could also be some random closer.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I did get the top 3 right at least but feel like its going to be really, really close between Sale\/Kluber.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NL Cy Young<\/strong><\/span>: Both the leading candidates missed time due to injury, but <strong>Scherzer<\/strong> only missed a couple of starts and has sizeable lead on <strong>Kershaw<\/strong> in both bWAR and in total Ks.\u00a0 I could see either guy eventually winning though; you can make arguments for either.\u00a0 Kershaw will have many more innings than he has last year, when he still managed to come in 5th in the vote, and he&#8217;ll have a significant lead in ERA.\u00a0 Past these two, there&#8217;s a slew of good hurlers who deserve recognition.\u00a0 <strong>Strasburg<\/strong> has put his name firmly in the argument with his scoreless inning streak, and ironically as of mid-September neither Stras or Scherzer was the bWAR pitching leader on his own *team* (<strong>Gio Gonzalez<\/strong> was).\u00a0 Former Nat Farmhand\u00a0<strong>Robbie Ray<\/strong> has had a great season, as has <strong>Greinke<\/strong>, as has <strong>Alex Wood<\/strong> and his gaudy W\/L record.\u00a0 3\/4\/5 could go a number of ways.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t forget <strong>Kenley Jansen<\/strong>, who gave up about as many earned runs this year as he did unintentional walks.\u00a0 Some even mention\u00a0<strong>Jacob deGrom\u00a0<\/strong>as a back of the ballot guy, but I think there&#8217;s enough voters impressed by Jansen&#8217;s season that he&#8217;ll make it in there.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I got the top 3 right and think i&#8217;ve got the right order too.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">AL Rookie<\/span><\/strong>: No surprise here; if <strong>Judge<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t win unanimously then someone needs their vote revoked.\u00a0 More interesting will be predicting the 2nd and 3rd place guys.\u00a0 Did <strong>Benintendi<\/strong> (the pre-season favorite) do enough?\u00a0 Did <strong>Gurriel<\/strong> and his Rookie of the Month award lift him?\u00a0 Are there any pitchers worth mentioning?\u00a0 Keith Law mentioned Oakland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matt Olsen<\/strong> as a good 3rd place player but he didn&#8217;t play nearly as much as these others.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Rafael Devers<\/strong>?\u00a0 Who knows.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I missed on Mancini versus Gurriel, but again that&#8217;s your 3rd place winner in this one-horse race.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NL Rookie<\/strong><\/span>: As with Judge, this should be unanimous as well, with <strong>Bellinger<\/strong> setting a rookie HR record for the Dodgers (who are easily the most illustrious of teams when it comes to rookie history).\u00a0 Does pre-season RoY favorite\u00a0<strong>Dansby Swanson<\/strong> even get mentioned on ballots after his struggle of a 2017 season?\u00a0 Who comes in third in the NL?\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; I missed on Bell versus Freeman but either way they&#8217;re playing for 2nd place.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>AL Manager<\/strong><\/span>: The Twins went from 100 losses to the playoffs; I think <strong>Molitor<\/strong>\u00a0wins this narrative-driven award thanks to this feat.\u00a0 Franconia might get it b\/c of Cleveland&#8217;s amazing winning streak.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; Missed on Hinch versus Girardi, but does not change my prediction.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NL Manager<\/strong><\/span>: I can&#8217;t see how <strong>Baker<\/strong> does NOT win this award,given the ridiculous injury issues he worked around and the whole-sale bullpen change at mid-season.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>With the finalists announced<\/strong><\/span>; Baker does not even make the top 3.\u00a0 I guess my homer-ism missed out here.\u00a0 I got just one of the 3 finalists right, with the voters picking\u00a0<strong>Dave Roberts<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Bud Black<\/strong> instead of Baker and Counsell.\u00a0 Re-guessing now that I see the finalists I think Bud Black is the new favorite, with Arizona&#8217;s Lovullo 2nd and Roberts third.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi there.\u00a0 Its time to write about the\u00a0&#8220;silly season&#8221;
