{"id":14985,"date":"2018-06-06T10:40:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T14:40:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=14985"},"modified":"2018-06-07T15:45:14","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T19:45:14","slug":"2018-cws-tournament-regional-results-super-regional-pairings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=14985","title":{"rendered":"2018 CWS tournament: Regional Results, Super-Regional Pairings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CWS-2018_calendar-narrow.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14875\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14875\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/CWS-2018_calendar-narrow.jpg\" alt=\"CWS-2018_calendar-narrow\" width=\"234\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CWS coverage for 2018:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=14873\">Field of 64 announcement<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now we\u2019re through the Regionals and the field has been winnowed from 64 to just 16.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll review the 16 regionals in order of the larger bracket. \u00a0<strong>Bold<\/strong>\u00a0is the host and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Bolded<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Red<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is the winner.\u00a0 We\u2019ll also highlight significant players and\/or guys who are big names in the upcoming draft as we get to them.<\/p>\n<p>It was a crazy set of regionals; by Sunday night only 6 of the 16 brackets were decided; a slew of regionals were forced to monday games (two weather delays involved). \u00a0And we saw one of the biggest upsets in recent memory. \u00a0Read on.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Regional Recaps<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Florida<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Florida<\/strong><\/span>, FAU, Jacksonville, Columbia.\u00a0 FAU gave #1 overall seed a scare, but ultimately lost in the final.\u00a0 They did put a beat-down on Florida #2\u00a0<strong>Jackson Kowar<\/strong>, which may have cost him 25 slots in the draft.<br \/>\n16. <strong>NC State<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Auburn<\/strong><\/span>, NC State, Army, Northeastern.\u00a0 #3 seed Northeastern does not do a good job defending critics of their getting an at-large bid.\u00a0 NC State inexplicably loses to Army to open the regional and cannot overcome Auburn to lose on its home turf.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Stanford<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Cal-State Fullerton<\/strong><\/span>, Stanford, Baylor, Wright State.\u00a0 The #2 overall national seed goes out to perennial power Fullerton, losing two close games.\u00a0 Fullerton advances as a #3 regional seed, probably under-seeded when all is said and done, but Baylor really under-performed here.<br \/>\n15. <strong>Coastal Carolina<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Washington<\/strong><\/span>, UConn, Coastal Carolina, LIU-Brooklyn.\u00a0 \u00a0Host CCU out early; they lost to Washington in the winner&#8217;s bracket and then Leesburg&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zack Hopeck<\/strong> gave them 5 solid innings in the elimination game but the bullpen fell apart against UConn.\u00a0 Pac-12 Washington advances as the #3 regional seed.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Oregon State<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Oregon State<\/strong><\/span>, LSU, Northwestern State, San Diego State; surprise 2-and-out showing from the Mountain West champ.\u00a0 Oregon State absolutely destroyed this regional, outscoring their opponents 35-4 in three games.\u00a0 Look out for this team.<br \/>\n14. <strong>Minnesota<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Minnesota<\/strong><\/span>, UCLA, Gonzaga, Canisius.\u00a0 Minnesota cruised through this regional.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Tennessee Tech<\/strong><\/span>, Ole Miss,\u00a0 Missouri State, St. Louis; huge upset here, with tiny Tennessee Tech ousting the #4 national seed Ole Miss, coming back through the loser&#8217;s bracket and beating them in a double header to end the weekend.<br \/>\n13. <strong>Texas<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Texas<\/strong><\/span>, Indiana, TAMU, Texas Southern.\u00a0 In the end, a chalk finish though Indiana worked their way through the loser&#8217;s bracket to get to the regional final before losing a close one.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Arkansas<\/strong><\/span>, Dallas Baptist, Southern Miss, Oral Roberts; host Arkansas wasn&#8217;t pushed til the final, overcoming regional powerhouse Dallas Baptist to advance.<br \/>\n12. <strong>ECU<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>South Carolina<\/strong><\/span>, UNC-W, ECU, Ohio State.\u00a0 Another poor showing from the Big10 as #3 Ohio State falls to CAA team UNC-W in the elimination game.\u00a0 UNC-W is no slouch team, but its still an upset.\u00a0 They made the region final as a #4 seed before falling to the SEC power.<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>UNC<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>UNC<\/strong><\/span>, Houston, Purdue, NC A&amp;T: UNC won a slug-fest over regional powerhouse Houston 19-11 to advance.<br \/>\n11. <strong>Stetson\u00a0<\/strong>region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Stetson<\/strong><\/span>, Oklahoma State, South Florida, Hartford; Stetson dominated this regional and looks like a tough out.<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Florida State<\/strong> region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Mississippi State<\/strong><\/span>, Oklahoma, Samford, Florida State.\u00a0 The #7 national seed goes 2-and-out in its own regional.\u00a0 There was some talk about Fla State not being as deserving of a national seed as some of its other ACC brothers &#8230; but nobody expected this.<br \/>\n10. <strong>Clemson\u00a0<\/strong>region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Vanderbilt<\/strong><\/span>, Clemson, St. Johns, Morehead State.\u00a0 Tough regional puts two quality teams together, and the SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt advances.<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Georgia<\/strong>\u00a0region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Duke<\/strong><\/span>, Georgia, Troy, Campbell.\u00a0 Duke came out of the loser&#8217;s bracket after a shock opening game loss to win the regional and send the national #8 seed home.<br \/>\n9. <strong>Texas Tech<\/strong>\u00a0region finish: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Texas Tech<\/strong><\/span>, Louisville Kent State, New Mexico State; this regional\u00a0 goes exactly chalk, with Texas Tech never really troubled (it won its three games by 7,6,5).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Predictions versus Actuals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=13884\">My Predictions<\/a>:\u00a0Florida, Auburn, Stanford, Coastal Carolina, Oregon State, Minnesota, Ole Miss, TAMU, Arkansas, South Carolina, UNC, Stetson,\u00a0 Florida State, Clemson, Georgia, Texas Tech<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Actuals<\/span>; Florida, Auburn, Cal-State Fullerton, Washington,\u00a0 Oregon State, Minnesota, Tennessee Tech, Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, UNC, Stetson, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Duke, Texas Tech<\/p>\n<p>I got just 9 of 16 right.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Summary of Regionals statistically<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just 8 of 16 hosts advanced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Four of the 8 national seeds fell: #2 Stanford, #4 Ole Miss, #7 Florida State, #8 Georgia<\/li>\n<li>#10, #12, #15 and #16 also fell: #10 Clemson, #12 ECU, #15 Coastal Carolina and #16 NC State.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 number one seeds, 6 number two seeds, 2 number three seeds, and 0 number four seeds advance to the super regionals. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>1 number of #4 seeds who didn\u2019t finish 4th in their regional;\u00a0Northwestern State, Dallas Baptist (a strong #4),\u00a0 Florida Atlantic, UNC-Wilmington, Kent State, Army, Wright State<\/li>\n<li>2: number of #4 seeds to get opening wins.\u00a0 Army beat #1 seed NC State in the opener,\u00a0Wright State (who\u00a0beat Florida State in the opener)<\/li>\n<li>Most surprising regional winner:\u00a0Tennessee Tech, even though they were a #2 regional seed.<\/li>\n<li>First time Super Regionalists: Tennessee Tech and Stetson.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Conference Breakdowns of the teams in the Super Regionals<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SEC: Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt<\/li>\n<li>ACC: Duke, UNC<\/li>\n<li>Big12: Texas Tech, Texas<\/li>\n<li>Pac12: Oregon State, Washington<\/li>\n<li>Big 10: Minnesota<\/li>\n<li>Big West: Cal State Fullerton<\/li>\n<li>Others: Tennessee Tech, Stetson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6 of the 16 remaining teams from the SEC; no other conference has more than two.\u00a0 Interestingly though, all 6 SEC teams are matched up in the super regionals, guaranteeing 3 of the 8 CWS spots to be from the powerhouse conference.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Super Regional Matchups<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0the higher ranked team is the host in each case.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve organized this as they feed into CWS brackets, not 1-16 seeds.\u00a0 In cases where neither ranked team advanced, the NCAA decides based on suitability of each site.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegebaseballdaily.com\/2018\/06\/05\/2018-super-regionals-sites-and-schedule-announced\/\">On 6\/5\/18 they announced the host sites<\/a> and I&#8217;ve denoted them below.\u00a0 Basically they decided to give the two more storied schools hosting duties.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">#1 Florida vs Auburn<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Duke vs #9 Texas Tech<\/li>\n<li>#5 Arkansas vs South Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Tennessee Tech vs #13 Texas<\/li>\n<li>#3 Oregon State vs #14 Minnesota<\/li>\n<li>#6 UNC\u00a0 vs #11 Stetson<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi State vs Vanderbilt (host)<\/li>\n<li>Cal State Fullerton (host) vs Washington<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Super Regional Thoughts\/Predictions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">#1 Florida vs Auburn: Florida took 2 of 3 at home against Auburn in the regular season, beating <strong>Casey Mize<\/strong> in the process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Duke vs #9 Texas Tech: Duke advanced while other, better ACC teams did not; I don&#8217;t know if they can top the powerful Texas Tech team.<\/li>\n<li>#5 Arkansas vs South Carolina: Arkansas beat South Carolina in the SEC tourney opener; only time they played this year.<\/li>\n<li>Tennessee Tech vs #13 Texas; Texas surprised me by coming out of a regional with an SEC team; you&#8217;d think they could overcome the tiny Tennessee Tech team.<\/li>\n<li>#3 Oregon State vs #14 Minnesota.\u00a0 Oregon State is my odds-on favorite to make the CWS final and Minnesota isn&#8217;t stopping them.<\/li>\n<li>#6 UNC vs #11 Stetson: UNC is going to have to work for this one, as they likely get beat by Stetson&#8217;s ace\u00a0<strong>Logan Gilbert<\/strong> on Friday.<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi State vs Vanderbilt: Vandy swept Mississippi State on their turf late in the season, and probably sweep them this coming weekend.<\/li>\n<li>Cal State Fullerton vs Washington;
