{"id":15846,"date":"2019-06-21T17:15:52","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T21:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=15846"},"modified":"2023-06-25T11:25:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-25T15:25:07","slug":"prep-baseball-coverage-2019-dc-md-va-regional-and-state-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=15846","title":{"rendered":"Prep Baseball Coverage 2019; DC, MD, VA Regional and State Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Fb-logo.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16022\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16022\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Fb-logo-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Fb-logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Fb-logo-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Fb-logo-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Fb-logo.jpg 899w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to my DC Area Prep Baseball Tourney coverage for 2019.\u00a0 \u00a0We kind of got pressed for time this year, so we&#8217;re summarizing at the finish of all the area regional and state championships this year all in one post instead of spreading it among 3-4 different posts like we&#8217;ve done in the past.<\/p>\n<p>This post summarizes the State championships for DC, MD and VA, highlighting the regional champs, and reports on the winners of the various big-time private school conferences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Virginia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All\u00a0state brackets available from this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/brackets\/baseball\/\">link\u00a0at VHSL<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/brackets\/baseball\/\">regional brackets\u00a0are here<\/a>.\u00a0 In 2019,\u00a0The state semis\/finals\u00a0got pushed a week across the board due to weather.\u00a0 This gave pitching-weak teams a distinct advantage versus having to win a 3-games-in-5 days format.\u00a0 All finals were on\u00a0Friday\u00a06\/14\/19.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Class 6\u00a0State Finals<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 thanks to NovaBaseballmagazine.com&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/no-1-westfield-no-2-lake-braddock-claim-class-6-region-titles-forge-falls-in-walk-off-fashion\">coverage of Class 6 Regionals<\/a>.\u00a0 State <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1l1SJ5w90CrNNdTEYaDiHntpZZgTEQxtz\/view\">Class 6 Bracket<\/a>.\u00a0 Records entering the state tourney.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Region 6A: <\/strong>#1 Ocean Lakes (17-6), #2 Cox (18-5).\u00a0 Ocean Lakes wins the region as 5th seed, #1 seed Grandby upset first round.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 6B:<\/strong> #1 James River (19-3), #2 Colonial Forge (16-8).\u00a0 Top seeds Cosby and Thomas Dale both upset first round.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 6C: <\/strong>#1 Lake Braddock (23-3), #2 West Springfield (14-11).\u00a0 \u00a0Region final a rematch of the district final; a very weak Region this year (only 7 teams even with winning records).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 6D: <\/strong>#1 Westfield (22-3), #2 Centreville (18-8); Region final a rematch of the district final.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Class 6 State Quarters results:\u00a0 All four regional champs advanced in close games on 6\/4\/19. Westfield ended West Springfield&#8217;s attempts to repeat as State Champs 5-4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-tournament-recaps-delisis-walk-off-sends-no-5-tigers-to-class-3-semifinals\">in walk-off fashion<\/a>.\u00a0 Ocean Lakes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-tournament-recaps-delisis-walk-off-sends-no-5-tigers-to-class-3-semifinals\">took out<\/a> Colonial Forge 2-0.\u00a0 Lake Braddock held off Centreville 5-4, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-tournament-recaps-delisis-walk-off-sends-no-5-tigers-to-class-3-semifinals\">scoring 5 in the first<\/a> and making them stick, and James River beat Cox 4-3.<\/p>\n<p>Class 6\u00a0State Semis: Both Northern Virginia teams advanced to the final; Lake Braddock taking out James River 9-6, and Westfield taking out Ocean Lakes 9-7.<\/p>\n<p>Class 6\u00a0State Final: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Lake Braddock<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/lake-braddock-gets-long-awaited-revenge-beats-westfield-for-class-6-baseball-title\/2019\/06\/14\/e933fdb4-8f0b-11e9-adf3-f70f78c156e8_story.html?utm_term=.8e99224fa308\">wins its first State title<\/a> since 2012 6-2 over Westfield behind a huge day from All Met POTY\u00a0<strong>Lyle Miller-Green<\/strong>&#8216;s massive day at the plate.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Class 5 State Finals<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0\u00a0thanks to NovaBaseballmagazine.com&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/no-3-stafford-stone-bridge-claim-class-5-region-titles\">coverage of Class 5 Regionals<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1JUNak9n3TSKkIVNKv7t_t_1B_QxSQ0qL\/view\">Class 5 State Bracket<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Records entering the state tourney.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Region 5A: <\/strong>#1 Hickory (22-1), #2 Menchville (19-4).\u00a0 #2 seed one-loss Hampton upset early, but dominant Hickory holds serve as one of the best teams in the state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 5B:<\/strong> #1 Mills Godwin (19-3), #2 Prince George (19-3):\u00a0 Regional final cancelled; #1 Mills Godwin given title.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 5C: <\/strong>#1 Stone Bridge (16-9), #2 Broad Run (16-9): Stone Bridge upset both its higher-seeded district rivals to win Region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 5D: <\/strong>#1 Stafford (21-3), #2 Halifax (22-3).\u00a0 \u00a0Huge upset of #1 seed Potomac clears path for Stafford to take regional title.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Class 5 State Quarters results: One upset in the State Quarters.\u00a0 Halifax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-tournament-recaps-delisis-walk-off-sends-no-5-tigers-to-class-3-semifinals\">destroyed<\/a> Stone Bridge 11-0 to advance.\u00a0 The other regional champs all went through: Stafford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-tournament-recaps-delisis-walk-off-sends-no-5-tigers-to-class-3-semifinals\">blanked<\/a> Broad Run 5-0.\u00a0 Hickory squeaked by Prince George 3-1 to end their chances to repeat as State champs.\u00a0 And Mills Godwin blanked Menchville 5-0.<\/p>\n<p>Class 5 State Semis Results: Stafford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-semifinals-no-3-stafford-no-5-riverside-advance-to-championship-games\">walked-off<\/a> Hickory in a crazy 11-10 game, while Mills Godwin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-semifinals-no-3-stafford-no-5-riverside-advance-to-championship-games\">walked-off<\/a> Halifax in the other 5-4 to advance to the state title game.<\/p>\n<p>Class 5 State Final: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Stafford<\/strong><\/span> held on to beat Mills Godwin 4-3.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Class 4 State Finals<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0thanks to NovaBaseballmagazine.com&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/rams-rally-then-hold-off-cougars-rally-to-claim-region-4c-championship\">coverage of Class\u00a04\u00a0Regionals<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1NCShss0yZMep-KyPqqcN4NWUydqVBY2L\/view\">Class 4 State Bracket<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Records entering the state tourney.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Region 4A: <\/strong>#1 Lafayette (16-7), #2 Great Bridge (18-6); Lafayette beat top seed and defending regional champ Grafton en route to the upset title.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 4B:<\/strong> #1 Hanover (19-2), #2 Midlothian (15-7); Hanover cruised to title as #1 seed, looking to get back to the state final for the 3rd time in 4 years.\u00a0 Midlothian makes the state tourney for the 1st time since 2005.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 4C: <\/strong>#1 Riverside (16-7), #2 Kettle Run (15-9): There&#8217;s only 4 teams in Region 4C: Riverside Beat the 19-3 Sherando en route to the title.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Region 4D: <\/strong>#1 Liberty Christian Academy (24-1), #2 Salem (18-5); LCA does not slip up this year, cruising to title as #1 seed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Class 4 State Quarters results:\u00a0 Just one upset in the quarters, with Great Bridge downing Hanover 7-4 in a rematch of the 2014 AAA state championship.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/zz_styling\/sports_briefs\/region-roundup-jf-girls-soccer-falls-lca-baseball-advances\/article_bf0c33de-944d-5395-81f2-441dacff1a40.html\">Liberty Christian destroyed Kettle Run 11-0<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0 Lafayette blanked Midlothian 8-0.\u00a0 Riverside beat Salem easily 9-3.<\/p>\n<p>Class 4 State Semis Results: Lafayette continued its upsetting ways, taking out one of the top teams in the state in Liberty Christian 8-2, while Riverside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/news\/state-semifinals-no-3-stafford-no-5-riverside-advance-to-championship-games\">blanked<\/a> Great Bridge 3-0 to advance to the state title game for the 2nd time in 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>Class 4 State Final: Riverside literally &#8220;threw away&#8221; Hanover&#8217;s super-junior\u00a0<strong>Derek Casey<\/strong>\u00a0(committed to UVA) outlasts Great Bridge and their 1st round talent\u00a0<strong>Connor Jones<\/strong>\u00a0(now attending UVA after spurning a likely late 1st round draft position). \u00a0Lake Braddock and Oakton beaten in the semis.<\/p>\n<p>2012: AAA: Lake Braddock d Kellam 4-0. Lake Braddock lost to West Springfield in the regional title game but then blitzed to\u00a0a state championship.<\/p>\n<p>2011: AAA: Great Bridge d South County in the state final, giving the powerful South County its first and only loss on the season after starting the season 28-0. \u00a0Lake Braddock was the regional finalist and lost to Great Bridge in the state quarters.<\/p>\n<p>2010: AAA: West Springfield d Woodbridge in the final, giving Woodbridge its only loss on the year. ranking<\/a>: Benedictine #24.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These National rankings are dominated by teams in Texas, Florida and California, as you might expect.\u00a0 These teams can play nearly 40 games and usually have at least 15-20 under their belts before DC\/MD\/VA teams even get going.\u00a0 So its somewhat of an accomplishment just to have a local team get some recognition.\u00a0 In fact, any cold-weather state team appearing in these lists is pretty special.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Major Newspaper Links\/Resources<\/strong>\u00a0for following prep baseball around the state<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Washington Post&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmetsports.com\/\">AllMetSports<\/a>\u00a0section with standings and schedule results.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/sports\/high-school\/\">Baltimore Sun&#8217;s high school page<\/a>\u00a0has information on some of the programs outside the DC area mentioned in the Maryland section<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/\">InsideNova.com<\/a>&#8216;s coverage of high school sports, but has put limits on the number of stories you can read.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/sports\/high-school\/\">Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/a>\u00a0has a HS scoreboard.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/pilot\/sports\">Hampton Roads Pilot<\/a>\u00a0(Hampton Roads) has scores for teams in the Chesapeake\/Norfolk\/Va Beach area.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.novabaseballmagazine.com\/\">NovaBaseballMagazine<\/a>: great coverage of Prep baseball in NorthernVirginia (thanks to\u00a0<strong>Joe Antonellis<\/strong>\u00a0for the heads up on this great new resource).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Local Newspaper Coverage<\/strong>, including links to many local papers covering smaller jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connection-sports.com\/news\/Sports\/Baseball\/\">Connection family of newspapers<\/a>\u00a0has a sports section that is rarely updated, but it does do some coverage.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/\">Nvdaily.com<\/a>\u00a0(Strasburg) has some results for some of the teams in the smaller conferences\/outskirts of DC, generally in the Strasburg area.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winchesterstar.com\/subchannel\/sports_headlines\">WinchesterStar<\/a>\u00a0(Winchester) has results for Winchester teams but its pay-only.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyprogress.com\/starexponent\/sports\/high_school\/\">The Daily Progress<\/a>\u00a0(Culpeper local paper) also has some scores for schools in its areas.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fauquier.com\/sports\/\">Fauquier Times<\/a>\u00a0(Fauquier) has some local sports news.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivaloudoun.com\/category\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/\">VivaLoudoun<\/a>\u00a0tracks the Loudoun\/Ashburn\/Leesburg teams.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loudountimes.com\/sports\">The Loudoun Times<\/a>\u00a0also covers Leesburg-area teams.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/locosportsnews.wordpress.com\/category\/sports\/baseball\/\">LoCosports blog<\/a>, with tons of Loudoun county Coverage<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburg.com\/sports\/\">Fredericksburg.com<\/a>\u00a0has some local coverage of Fredericksburg and Woodbridge teams.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/sports\/\">Lynchburg News &amp;
