Lopez, King)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shairon Martis<\/strong> had another dominant start in AA: 6IP, 7H, 2R, 1ER, BB, 6K, HR.\u00a0 He needs to move up.<\/li>\n<li>Another good start for <strong>Robbie Ray<\/strong> on 7\/1: 6IP, 5H, 3R, ER, 2BB, 6K, reversing his slide over the past few games.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gregory Baez<\/strong> had a nice little 4-inning &#8220;start&#8221; on 7\/1: 4ip, 2hits, 0 runs, 3Ks and 1BB.<\/li>\n<li>Another excellent start for <strong>Tom Milone<\/strong> on 7\/2: 6\u2153 IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 6K.\u00a0 Unfortunately the most deserving AAA starter is NOT getting the spot start for the big club this week, as Detwiler&#8217;s improved form an Milone&#8217;s lack of 40-man status conspires against him.\u00a0 No worries Tom; your time will come (perhaps as Zimmermann&#8217;s innings-limit replacement in late august).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chien-Ming Wang<\/strong> threw his 2nd rehab start on 7\/2, this time in high-A for Potomac.\u00a0 As <strong>Adam Kilgore<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/chien-ming-wang-throws-four-scoreless-innings-for-potomac-nationals\/2011\/07\/02\/AGtV2qvH_blog.html?wprss=nationals-journal\">reports<\/a>,  he pitched 4 scoreless inning, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.\u00a0 He  reportedly hit 91mph, which is great news.\u00a0 I pulled the Pitch f\/x data  from Wang&#8217;s 2007 season prior to his injury to try to get a feel for  what he was capable of back then.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooksbaseball.net\/pfxVB\/pfx.php?month=6&amp;day=6&amp;year=2007&amp;game=gid_2007_06_06_nyamlb_chamlb_1%2F&amp;pitchSel=425426&amp;prevGame=gid_2007_06_06_nyamlb_chamlb_1%2F&amp;prevDate=66\">the data<\/a> from June 6th, 2007, one of Wang&#8217;s best games that season.\u00a0 Average  fastball of 94, peaks of 97, with great separation between his fastball  and his change-up.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t realize he threw that hard (if you believe  the Pitch f\/x data; it is spotty that early in the system&#8217;s history).\u00a0  If the goal is to get his speed back to 94-97, he&#8217;s got a long way to  go.<\/li>\n<li>An excellent start for <strong>Matt Grace<\/strong> on 7\/3: 7IP, 5H, 2R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K.\u00a0 Its good to see him rebound from a couple of sub-par performances lately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brad Peacock<\/strong> had an uncharacteristically (for him) wild <a href=\"http:\/\/web.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=t547&amp;gid=2011_07_04_eswaax_haraax_1&amp;cid=547&amp;t=g_box\">7\/4 start<\/a> in Harrisburg but still got the dominant victory.\u00a0 Line: 6ip, 5hits 1run (unearned), 9ks and 2 bbs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christopher McKenzie<\/strong> surprisingly was given a GCL start on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=milb&amp;gid=2011_07_04_astrok_natrok_1&amp;cid=466&amp;t=g_box\">7\/4<\/a> and he did pretty well: 4ip, 3hits, 1 unearned run, 4Ks and 1 walk.\u00a0 He&#8217;s clearly too old for<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paul Applebeee<\/strong> had an excellent spot start in Hagerstown (filling in for the newly promoted Solis) on 7\/5: 5IP, 4H, 1ER, 0BB, 5K.\u00a0 Since there&#8217;s now a hole in that rotation and the Short-A squad being so inconsistent, I wonder if Applebee sticks there for a bit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bad<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cameron Selik<\/strong> got waxed in Potomac on 7\/1: 5+ IP, 9H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 2K, HR.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paul Demmin<\/strong> took a step backwards for Auburn on 7\/2: 4\u2154 IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 4K, 2HR.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tanner Roark<\/strong> got tagged for 2 homers in 5 innings en route to another loss.\u00a0 Line: 5ip, 7H, 4ER, 3BB, 6K, 2 HR, HBP.\u00a0 10 baserunners in 5 innings continues a mediocre season for Roark.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wirkin Estevez<\/strong> continued his up-and-down performances for Auburn on 7\/3: 4IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 2K.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two good, two bad so far for the DSL grad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anthony Marcelino<\/strong> got pounded in the GCL on 7\/3: 3\u2153 IP, 7H, 9R, 6ER, 3BB, 2K.\u00a0 This was his first start but his third appearance and none have gone very well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christian Meza<\/strong> struggled in <a href=\"http:\/\/web.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=t458&amp;gid=2011_07_04_stcasx_aubasx_1&amp;cid=458&amp;t=g_box\">Auburn on 7\/4<\/a> badly, getting knocked around for 5runs on 5 hits in 2 2\/3 innings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon King<\/strong> got pounded in the GCL on 7\/5: 2\u2154 IP, 6H, 7R, 7ER, 2BB, 2K, HR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mediocre\/Inconclusive<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>JD Martin<\/strong>&#8216;s 7\/1 spot start was barely mediocre.\u00a0 5\u2154 IP, 10H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 2K, HR.\u00a0\u00a0 Though I&#8217;ll ask the audience, at what point does Martin stop becoming a &#8220;spot starter?&#8221;\u00a0 He&#8217;s got 9 on the season thus far.\u00a0 I guess this is what AAA teams do, needing a 6th starter for most of the season as guys move up and out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colin Bates<\/strong> had an interesting 7\/1 start: 5\u2153 IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 0K.\u00a0 No strikeouts in 5+ innings, that may be a first for a starter in our system this year.<\/li>\n<li>Was <strong>Erik Davis<\/strong> &#8220;pitching to the score&#8221; in Harrisburg on 7\/2?\u00a0 Final line: 7IP, 10H, 3ER, 0BB, 4K, HR.\u00a0 It was 10-0 heading into the bottom of the third.\u00a0 Perhaps so; certainly with a 10 run lead i&#8217;d be in experimentation mode, not necessarily buckle down mode as a starter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oliver Perez<\/strong> returned from the DL for the 2nd half of 7\/2&#8217;s double header and put in a mediocre start.\u00a0 4\u2154 IP, 7H, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K.\u00a0 See the notes section for my thoughts on the franchise&#8217;s use of Perez right now.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AJ Cole <\/strong>pitched decently enough, but for only 4 innings, for Hagerstown on 7\/2: 4IP, 5H, 3ER, BB, 4K.\u00a0 Not sure why he was taken out so soon.<\/li>\n<li>Another quality start for <strong>Craig Stammen<\/strong> in Syracuse on 7\/3: 6IP, 8H, 3ER, BB, 5K, HR.\u00a0 He needs to do more to earn a return trip to the MLB.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Danny Rosenbaum<\/strong> was struggling for Potomac on 7\/3 when the game got washed away (along with many trees in the area) on 7\/3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yuniesky Maya<\/strong> struggled with his control on <a href=\"http:\/\/web.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=t552&amp;gid=2011_07_04_bufaaa_syraaa_1&amp;cid=552&amp;t=g_box\">7\/4<\/a> but still pitched a quality start.\u00a0 6 2\/3, 5hits, 2 runs (both earned), 5Ks and 3 walks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adam Olbrychowski<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/web.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=t436&amp;gid=2011_07_04_wilafa_potafa_1&amp;cid=436&amp;t=g_box\">7\/4 start<\/a> wasn&#8217;t terrible, but it was enough to take the loss.\u00a0 6ip, 7 hits, 4 runs, 4 Ks and 0 walks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Jordan<\/strong> kept Hagerstown in the game on 7\/4, but didn&#8217;t get the victory.\u00a0 Line: 5 1\/3, 7hits, 2runs, 5ks and 2 walks.\u00a0 Not bad, but not excellent either.<\/li>\n<li>It was &#8220;reliever night&#8221; in Syracuse on 7\/5, with <strong>Chad Gaudin<\/strong> getting a rehab start (line: 2\u2154 IP, 2H, 3R, 0ER, 2BB, 2K), and 4 other relievers then pouring gasoline on the fire of a 11-6 loss.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Erik Arneson<\/strong> went 6 2\/3 for Harrisburg on 7\/6, good enough for the win.\u00a0 Line: 6\u2154 IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K.\u00a0 A bit too many baserunners for a &#8220;good&#8221; in my book.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sammy Solis<\/strong>, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/byron_kerr\/2011\/07\/solis-nets-victory-with-awesome-debut-in-potomac.html\">debut in high-A<\/a> on 7\/5 was covered by Byron Kerr here.\u00a0 He talked more glowingly about it than his line indidates: 6IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 5K.\u00a0 He clearly has good stuff, a 93mph fastball and 2 secondary pitches that he can command, and should continue to fare well for this team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manny Rodriguez<\/strong>&#8216;s 7\/5 appearance in Auburn was just ok: 4IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 3K.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, Rodriguez&#8217;s 2nd &#8220;starter&#8221; teammate <strong>Kelvin Lopez<\/strong> piched 3 dominant innings for the win the same day: 3IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 4K.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Relievers of Note and other Thoughts<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The use of <strong>Matt Chico<\/strong> continues to confound.\u00a0 He had made two scheduled GCL starts, but then his rotation spot was skipped and he worked out of the bullpen on 7\/1.\u00a0 Is he a starter or is he a reliever?\u00a0 The big-league team could sure use a Loogy (going so far as to sign waived Philadelphia reject <strong>JC Romero<\/strong> recently), and Chico has MLB experience.\u00a0 I&#8217;m surprised they&#8217;re not pushing him into this kind of role.\u00a0 That being said, he did a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?sid=milb&amp;gid=2011_07_04_astrok_natrok_1&amp;cid=466&amp;t=g_box\">late-inning stint on 7\/4<\/a> and got hit badly in the GCL, an embarassing outing that may mean he&#8217;s closer to the door than the majors.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of potential LOOGYs in the majors, why do we continues to use <strong>Oliver Perez<\/strong> as a starter in AA?\u00a0 Why don&#8217;t we try him out as a situational reliever instead of letting him waste as a starter in a level he is clearly too old and too experienced for?<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of Perez &#8230; if he returns to AA&#8217;s rotation (as it seems), who makes way?\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps <strong>Erik Arneson<\/strong> &#8230;. but he was an all-star for this team.\u00a0 On form it may end up being <strong>Tanner Roark<\/strong> though.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see next cycle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hassan Pena<\/strong> at Harrisburg got some nice recognition, being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/byron_kerr\/2011\/07\/pena-gets-call-to-eastern-all-star-game-peacock-will-attend-but-not-pitch.html\">named to the Eastern League all star team<\/a> to replace Peacock (who will pitch in the Futures game).<\/li>\n<li>In what I consider to be a surprise move, the Nats have decided to have <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/bryce-harper-promoted-to-class-aa-harrisburg\/2011\/07\/04\/gHQAaIOdxH_blog.html?wprss=nationals-journal\">skip Potomac &amp; High-A ball<\/a> and go straight to AA.\u00a0 Potomac uber-fan Sue Dinem posted his (hers?) <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalsprospects.com\/2011\/07\/harpers-skips-potomac-moved-to-harrisburg\/\">reaction here<\/a> and I can&#8217;t necessarily refute any of his\/her opinions.\u00a0 If I had to guess I&#8217;d say the team is primarily worried about the crummy field in Potomac, perhaps penalizing the local affiliate owner for not taking care of the situation sooner.\u00a0 From purely a player-development perspective perhaps this is a good move for the team overall; Harper held his own in the AFL against AA talent and this may put him in line for a 2012 spot sooner than we all thought.\u00a0 Or even a 9\/1 callup (though I&#8217;d be slightly against this move as it would complicate his arbitration clock).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tom Milone<\/strong>&#8216;s continued excellence has earned him the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/byron_kerr\/2011\/07\/milone-named-il-pitcher-of-the-week.html\">International League&#8217;s pitcher of the week<\/a> award.<\/li>\n<li>As expected, <strong>Ross Detwiler<\/strong>&#8216;s performance as of late has earned him a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/ross-detwiler-will-start-tuesday\/2011\/07\/04\/gHQAfJHDyH_blog.html?wprss=nationals-journal\">spot start<\/a> in the majors.\u00a0 No matter how well he does, it should be a one-and-done start, but it would be nice to see him throw 6 or 7 clean innings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sammy Solis<\/strong> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/byron_kerr\/2011\/07\/solis-promoted-to-high-a-potomac-starts-tonight.html\">promoted<\/a> to make his normal-rest start in Potomac instead of Hagerstown on 7\/5.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps not necessarily on form but definitely on age and experience, Solis belongs in Potomac as a college draftee and should get a better challenge there.\u00a0 Solis&#8217;s promotion seems to have come at the expense of <strong>Evan Bronson<\/strong> in Potomac&#8217;s rotation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pedro Encarnation<\/strong>&#8216;s rough start to the season has seemingly earned him a demotion out of Auburn&#8217;s rotation, with his normal spot being taken by Meza this turn.\u00a0 Meza didn&#8217;t exactly light it up, so Encarnation could be back.\u00a0 Update: he got <a href=\"http:\/\/web.minorleaguebaseball.com\/milb\/stats\/stats.jsp?t=l_trn&amp;lid=127&amp;sid=l127\">demoted back to the GCL<\/a> on 7\/3.<\/li>\n<li>Why was <strong>Brad Meyers<\/strong> skipped in Syracuse&#8217;s rotation?\u00a0 Gaudin did a rehab start on Meyer&#8217;s turn, and Martin is scheduled for 7\/7.\u00a0 Ahh;
