{"id":2111,"date":"2011-08-02T18:49:20","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T22:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2111"},"modified":"2012-11-15T10:23:11","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T15:23:11","slug":"nats-trade-moves-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2111","title":{"rendered":"Nats Trade Moves &#038; Thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Previously I posted that I thought the Nats should <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2075\">trade pretty much everyone<\/a> they could, given their current spot in the standings.\u00a0 How&#8217;d they do?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the moves.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquiring <strong>Jonny Gomes<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2097\">reviewed here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 We picked up Gomes for two minor leaguers that were either blocked (Rhinehart) or long shots (Manno).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/news\/article.jsp?ymd=20110730&amp;content_id=22512078&amp;vkey=news_was&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">Trading <strong>Jerry Hairston<\/strong><\/a> for a decent AA outfielder in <strong>Erik Komatsu<\/strong>.\u00a0 Honestly I was a bit surprised Hairston was moved, given his valuable multi-position coverage for this team this year.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/statistics\/players\/cards\/81252\">Komatsu<\/a> wasn&#8217;t a BA top10 prospect for Milwaukee, but they did rate him as being the Brewer&#8217;s best <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/today\/prospects\/rankings\/organization-top-10-prospects\/2011\/2611130.html\">hitting-for-average<\/a> prospect in the pre-season.\u00a0 He has a good pedigree (Cal State Fullerton product) and is doing well in AA this year.\u00a0 He seems to be another attempt to build the outfielder pipeline that has been pretty poor, and has left the team continually struggling for a quality center fielder.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csnwashington.com\/07\/30\/11\/Marquis-dealt-to-Dbacks-hours-before-sta\/landing.html?blockID=544894&amp;feedID=6358\">Trading <strong>Jason Marquis<\/strong><\/a> for a low-minors shortstop in <strong>Zach Walters<\/strong>.\u00a0 Walters was spoken well of by his former U\u00a0 San Diego teammate <strong>Sammy Solis<\/strong>, and has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/statistics\/players\/cards\/40591\">hitting well this season<\/a> (albeit he&#8217;s playing in low-A as a college draftee).\u00a0 Some advocated against trading Marquis; not I though, figuring that Marquis was going to draw a decent prospect from somewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2075\">what I&#8217;d like to see the Nats do<\/a>&#8221; post a few days ago, I basically advocated trading everybody we could.\u00a0 Clearly having <strong>Laynce Nix<\/strong> and <strong>Ivan Rodriguez<\/strong> on the DL (either current or recently) prevented them from being trade candidates, and moving <strong>Livan Hernandez<\/strong> probably would have left a massive veteran leadership hole in the pitching corps.\u00a0 We DFA&#8217;d <strong>Matt Stairs<\/strong> (not that he was ever going to be a trade candidate), and I&#8217;d guess that both <strong>Rick Ankiel<\/strong> and <strong>Alex Cora<\/strong> could still be waiver-wire trades made closer to the post season.\u00a0 The one move that remains a surprise is not trading <strong>Todd Coffey<\/strong>, a decent right hander out of the pen that surely could have shorn up someone&#8217;s bullpen for a low-level prospect.<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;non-move&#8221; category, I&#8217;m glad we didn&#8217;t move <strong>Drew Storen<\/strong> for <strong>Denard Span<\/strong> as was frequently mentioned in trade rumors leading up to the 7\/31 deadline.\u00a0 Honestly i&#8217;d rather pursue <strong>BJ Upton<\/strong> in the off season for a higher-ceiling guy.\u00a0 <strong>Clippard<\/strong> is valuable but is a reliever, and despite the tendency of fans to overvalue their own relievers, the return didn&#8217;t seem to be worth the disruption to the bullpen.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing a few of these expiring contract guys may be post waiver-wire trade possibilities, but all in all I&#8217;m happy with the moves and non-moves.\u00a0 I certainly don&#8217;t agree with the pundits who are labeling the team &#8220;losers&#8221; in the trade market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Previously I posted that I thought the Nats should trade pretty much everyone they could, given their current spot in the standings.\u00a0 How&#8217;d they do?
