{"id":254,"date":"2010-10-18T12:14:30","date_gmt":"2010-10-18T16:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=254"},"modified":"2012-10-11T09:40:34","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T13:40:34","slug":"interesting-thoughts-about-the-giants-roster-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=254","title":{"rendered":"Interesting thoughts about the Giant&#8217;s roster construction&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I watch the NLCS and its surprising results so far (<strong>Cody Ross<\/strong> with a <strong>Reggie Jackson<\/strong>-esque performance thus far, <strong>Roy Halladay<\/strong> getting beat, etc), you can&#8217;t help but notice some interesting items about the <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/team\/depth\/_\/name\/sf\/san-francisco-giants\">Giants roster<\/a> and its makeup.<\/p>\n<p>1. The Giants THREE <a href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/pub?key=ts76JOioApkb62aMqSgLT7A&amp;output=html\">highest paid players<\/a> (<strong>Zito<\/strong>, <strong>Rowand<\/strong>, <strong>Guillen<\/strong>) are not even on the post season roster, and their 4th highest paid player (<strong>Renteria<\/strong>) is not the starter at short.<\/p>\n<p>2. The position players that the Giants are depending on are all either developed internally (<strong>Posey<\/strong>, <strong>Sandoval<\/strong>) are retread\/journeyman free agents on one-year deals (<strong>Torres<\/strong>, <strong>Uribe<\/strong>, <strong>Huff<\/strong>, <strong>Fontenot<\/strong>) or total reclamation projects (<strong>Burrell <\/strong>who was DFA&#8217;d earlier this season and <strong>Ross <\/strong>who they got on waivers).<\/p>\n<p>3. Almost their entire pitching staff is home grown. <strong> Lincecum<\/strong>, <strong>Cain<\/strong>, <strong>Sanchez<\/strong>, <strong>Bumgarner <\/strong>plus setup\/closer<br \/>\ncombo of <strong>Romo <\/strong>and <strong>Wilson <\/strong>are all original SF draft picks. Hope for the Nats, since this seems to be the direction <strong>Rizzo <\/strong>is going with his 2009 and 2010 pitcher heavy drafts.  8 of the first 11 picks in 2009 were arms, and while only 4 of 2010&#8217;s top 10 picks were arms there was significant funds paid to <strong>Solis<\/strong>, <strong>Cole <\/strong>and <strong>Ray<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Can the Nats turn these two drafts (plus other prospects) into a Giants-esque rotation? <strong> Strasburg<\/strong>, <strong>Zimmermann<\/strong>, <strong>Solis<\/strong>, and <strong>Cole <\/strong>all project to be #1 or #2 starter quality per scouting reports.
