Photo Jacqueline Martin\/AP via federalbaseball.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is it; the last rotation cycle of the season.\u00a0 And it will be a shortened one; with just 3 games remaining.\u00a0 But we do get one more start out of <strong>Stephen Strasburg<\/strong> as the team improbably has a chance to finish the season with a winning record.\u00a0 To do it, they&#8217;ll have to go into the lion&#8217;s den and beat a Florida team that has had its number over the past few seasons.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the Nats record against Florida over the past few seasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/NL\/2011-standings.shtml\">2011<\/a>: 5-10 (not including last three games)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/NL\/2010-standings.shtml\">2010<\/a>: 5-13<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/NL\/2009-standings.shtml\">2009<\/a>: 6-12<\/li>\n<li>2008: 3-14 (!)<\/li>\n<li>2007: 10-8<\/li>\n<li>2006: 7-11<\/li>\n<li>2005: 9-9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s a total (since moving to Washington) of 45-77.\u00a0 This clearly needs to improve, especially since in 2011 the team <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/NL\/2011-standings.shtml\">beat or was even with the rest of their NL east opponents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Good<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stephen Strasburg<\/strong> finished off the season with a bang on 9\/28 (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_09_28_wasmlb_flomlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was#gid=2011_09_28_wasmlb_flomlb_1&amp;mode=box\">box\/gamer<\/a>), absolutely dominating the Marlins over 6 innings.\u00a0 Final line: 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks and 10 Ks in just 79 pitches.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 How&#8217;s that for a teaser for 2012?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mediocre\/Inconclusive<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tommy Milone<\/strong> labored through 4 1\/3 innings before getting an early hook on 9\/26 (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_09_26_wasmlb_flomlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was\">box\/gamer<\/a>), leaving it for later heroics (aka, <strong>Michael Morse&#8217;<\/strong>s 9th inning 3 run shot) to get the win.\u00a0 The mediocre start caps off a pretty good September for Milone, who has certainly staked his claim for the 2012 rotation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Lannan<\/strong>&#8216;s final 2011 start on 9\/27 (<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/gameday\/index.jsp?gid=2011_09_27_wasmlb_flomlb_1&amp;mode=recap&amp;c_id=was&amp;partnerId=rss_was#gid=2011_09_27_wasmlb_flomlb_1&amp;mode=box\">box\/gamer<\/a>) wasn&#8217;t too bad; 6ip 3 hits and 3 walks resulting in 2 earned runs and a no-decision.\u00a0 As has been typical in September he was yanked an inning too early (he sat on 89 pitches) and could have gone 7.\u00a0 None the less, he caps off a great season, his best as a pro, and is clearly the #3 starter on this team going into 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starter Trends<\/p>\n<p>2nd half<br \/>\nMilone\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0bad,soso,good,good,soso<br \/>\nLannan\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,good,bad,soso,good,bad,bad,good,soso,good,bad,soso,soso,soso<br \/>\nStrasburg\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0great,soso,good,bad,great<br \/>\nDetwiler\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0soso,soso,good,good,bad,bad,soso,great,good<br \/>\nWang\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0bad,bad,great,soso,soso,good,bad,soso,soso,soso,good,good<br \/>\nPeacock\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0good,good,great<\/p>\n<p>Relievers of Note and other News<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mike Rizzo<\/strong> was quoted on 9\/25 as saying the team was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/nationals-mike-rizzo-want-to-acquire-outfielder-starting-pitching-this-offseason\/2011\/09\/25\/gIQAeCmWwK_blog.html?wprss=nationals-journal\">an outfielder and a starting pitcher<\/a>&#8221; away from real contention in 2012.\u00a0 This could be an indicator of the off-season plans of the team (definitely a future blog post).\u00a0 <strong>Adam Kilgore<\/strong> guesses the team could sacrifice some of its starter depth to obtain a center fielder (perhaps again going after someone like <strong>BJ Upton<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> will play all three OF positions in the AFL, and presumably next season, in preparation for positional flexibility once he arrives in the majors.\u00a0 This makes sense to me; he&#8217;s athletic enough to play some center and has a big enough arm to play right.\u00a0 Meanwhile <strong>Jayson Werth <\/strong>is in the same boat.\u00a0 Only <strong>Michael Morse<\/strong> has positional inflexibility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stephen Strasburg<\/strong> probably will have a similar 160ip limit in 2012 that <strong>Jordan Zimmermann<\/strong> had this year, per various <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/7018919\/washington-nationals-stephen-strasburg-innings-limit-2012\">national reports<\/a>.\u00a0 What may be interesting is this; if this team, which has already won 78 games and surpassed most people&#8217;s predictions of between 72 and 75 wins, continues its improvement into 2012, they very well may be in the thick of the wild card race right at the time when Strasburg is set to shut down.\u00a0 Would the team shelve him for a month to save innings?<\/li>\n<li>With the 9\/28\/11 victory, the team officially dropped to the 16th draft pick in the first round (here&#8217;s your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/reversestandings\/\">Reverse Standings<\/a>).\u00a0 <strong>Adam Kilgore <\/strong>commented on this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/looking-at-the-nationals-improvement\/2011\/09\/29\/gIQA49oP6K_blog.html?wprss=nationals-journal\">same topic here<\/a>.\u00a0 This officially means the team had an unprotected first round draft pick for the first time since the team moved here.\u00a0 This automatically and drastically changes the nature of our off season FA plans.\u00a0 Knowing we have to give up the 16th overall pick (even if its a weaker draft) certainly will give pause to the draft-pick coveting front office.\u00a0 Is CJ Wilson worth losing this pick?<\/li>\n<li>Hey, here&#8217;s a shock; <strong>Doug Slaten<\/strong> blew another game for the Nats on 9\/27\u00a0 This time it was the 2nd to last game, giving up a walk-off homer to a lefty who nobody&#8217;s ever heard of to lose the game.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t get it; why was Slaten even in the game?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.cgi?id=slatedo01&amp;t=p&amp;year=2011\">game-log for 2011<\/a>; since returning from the DL he has had exactly ONE &#8220;successful&#8221; outing (a one-pitch, one out appearance against Houston).\u00a0 Every other time he&#8217;s given up hits, walked the guy he was brought in to face, or otherwise disappointed.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s hoping the team has learned all they need to learn about him and gives him his walking papers as soon as the season is over.<\/li>\n<li>The team and <strong>Laynce Nix<\/strong> have &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/blog\/nationals-watch\/2011\/sep\/27\/nationals-nix-have-exchanged-figures-contract-2012\/\">exchanged salary figures<\/a>&#8221; for 2012.\u00a0 Interesting; if the team locks up Nix for 2012, suddenly there&#8217;s one less outfield position available for the slew of guys potentially in the mix.\u00a0 That most likely means the end of <strong>Jonny Gomes<\/strong> tenure here (one that probably was guaranteed by his poor batting average anyway).\u00a0 The problem is that we likely won&#8217;t get the benefit of Gomes&#8217; compensation pick now; he probably would accept an arbitration offering, sticking the team with the player for 2012 and locking up two backup outfielder positions.\u00a0 Nix had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nixla01.shtml\">pretty good year<\/a>, mostly working in a platoon situation against RHPs, and has some positional flexibilty to play LF, RF and 1B.\u00a0 He&#8217;s also played CF in the past, though he seems too bulky to really be a Rizzo-preferred defender there now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that the season is over, I&#8217;ll do a wrap-up of the MLB pitching similar to the other levels, and follow that up with projected 2012 positions throughout the entire system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is it;
