Photo John Iacono via si.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is your semi-weekly\/periodic wrap-up of Nats and other baseball news that caught my eye.\u00a0 With the approaching Hall of Fame nonsense, er I mean news cycle approaching, I&#8217;ll throw in a HoFame section.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Nationals In General<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transcribed from a radio interview by <strong>Tim Dierkes<\/strong>, here&#8217;s <strong>Mike Rizzo<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2011\/12\/rizzo-on-center-field-first-base.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">on CF and 1B<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the first time I&#8217;ve seen Rizzo mention NEXT year&#8217;s FA class in terms of looking for talent and it makes you wonder if we don&#8217;t already have our entire primary starting 15 set (8 out-field players, 5 starters and setup\/closer) for 2012.\u00a0\u00a0 I can live with <strong>Jayson Werth<\/strong> in CF, since it opens up lots of FA possibilities in RF.\u00a0 In fact, I smell a separate post coming&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Former Nat <strong>Lastings Milledge<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2011\/12\/27\/former-top-prospect-lastings-milledge-signs-with-the-tokyo-yakult-swallows\/\">going to Japan<\/a> to try to resurrect his baseball career.<\/li>\n<li>Scouting-specific SeedlingsToStars.com <a href=\"http:\/\/seedlingstostars.com\/2011\/12\/28\/the-seedlings-to-stars-2012-top-100-prospects-10-anthony-rendon\/\">site looks at<\/a> <strong>Anthony Rendon<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The USA Today does an in-depth, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/sports\/baseball\/nl\/nationals\/story\/2011-12-28\/nationals-organizational-report\/52255846\/1?csp=34sports&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodaycomSports-TopStories+%28Sports+-+Top+Stories%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">position-by-position overview<\/a> of the team and where it stands.<\/li>\n<li>Another <strong>Tom Boswell<\/strong> article that I disagree with; he thinks <strong>Prince Fielder<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/nationals\/prince-fielders-price-is-not-right-for-nationals-right-now\/2011\/12\/28\/gIQA5wZCNP_story.html\">isn&#8217;t &#8220;right&#8221; for the Nats<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m sorry; but Fielder is a run creating machine (he created 35 more runs last year than <strong>Michael Morse<\/strong>, by way of comparison, which roughly equates with his 5.2 Wins Above replacement value).\u00a0 Yes we have <strong>LaRoche<\/strong> who is plus defense, but is he going to come back to 2010&#8217;s form or is he going to be a lost cause again?\u00a0 Meanwhile, Fielder looks set to take a shorter term deal and re-try his hand at the FA market when he hits 30.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t you sign him for 3yrs $70M?\u00a0 You put Fielder at 1B, keep Morse in Left, groom <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> to play center and keep Werth in right.\u00a0\u00a0 For the next 3 years.\u00a0 How difficult is that?\u00a0 Boswell talks about where to put Rendon; well; you put him wherever you have a need.\u00a0 Put him at 2nd and move <strong>Espinosa<\/strong> to short.\u00a0 Or you trade someone to free up room.\u00a0 This team&#8217;s problem isn&#8217;t the need for a lead-off slap hitter; we need a big run producer in the middle of the order.\u00a0 Someone to replace what <strong>Adam Dunn<\/strong> gave us for two years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan Tatusko<\/strong> posts his <a href=\"http:\/\/ryantatusko.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/29\/reflecting-on-2011-and-preparing-for-2012\/\">2011 recap<\/a> of his minor league season plus his time in the Venezuelan Winter League.\u00a0 I wish more players were as blogger-friendly as Tatusko.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Hall of Fame Specific<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A pro <strong>Edgar Martinez<\/strong> take with the important quote, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2011\/12\/28\/there-is-a-position-called-the-designated-hitter-its-in-the-rules-and-everything\/\">There is a position called DH<\/a>&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 I have changed my own stance on this issue in recent years, especially when considering relief pitchers as hall of fame worthy.\u00a0 If you argue that a closer and his 60-70 innings is somehow more valuable to a team than a designated hitter&#8217;s 650 at bats, then I&#8217;d have to disagree.\u00a0 On my hypothetical ballot, Martinez is in.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent review of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/blogs\/index.php\/which-active-players-are-going-to-cooperstown\/\">active MLB players under HoFame consideration<\/a> by Fangraph&#8217;s <strong>Dave Cameron<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Also, the comments discussion brings up a number of other players.\u00a0 He uses primarily career WAR to determine the player&#8217;s value, which I&#8217;m somewhat hesitant about (in most cases WAR is an accumulator stat, as a mediocre player who stayed very healthy will have a higher WAR than an excellent but shorter-lived career).<\/li>\n<li>This article really got to me, to the point where I commented on both the original post by <strong>Jay Jaffe<\/strong> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballprospectus.com\/article.php?articleid=15755\">Baseball Prospectus<\/a> and the discussion at <strong>TangoTiger<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidethebook.com\/ee\/index.php\/site\/comments\/jack_morris_is_brad_radke\/\">InsideTheBook.com blog<\/a>.\u00a0 Jaffe&#8217;s hall of fame measuring system (called JAWS) somehow has determined that <strong>Brad Radke<\/strong>, the middling pitcher for the Twins who had basically one standout season in his career, was a BETTER player career-wise than <strong>Jack Morris<\/strong>.\u00a0 How would any sane baseball observer possibly come to this conclusion?\u00a0 This is where the modern blogger&#8217;s over-reliance on statistics really gets to me.\u00a0 I have not read into why this system ranks Radke so high while ranking Morris so low but suspect it is due to a reliance on the same calculations that go into the ERA+ statistic (of which Radke&#8217;s career ERA+ of113\u00a0 is better than <strong>Nolan Ryan<\/strong>&#8216;s career era of 112).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Free Agents\/Player Transaction News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oakland continues to dismantle itself: Boston <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/boston\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/7397557\/andrew-bailey-traded-oakland-athletics-boston-red-sox\">trades OF prospect<\/a> <strong>Josh Reddick<\/strong> and two other players to Oakland for closer <strong>Andrew Bailey<\/strong> and outfielder <strong>Ryan Sweeney<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is after Boston acquired <strong>Mark Melancon<\/strong> earlier in the off-season; they now have completely remade the back side of their rotation.\u00a0 Clearly the team is moving <strong>Daniel Bard<\/strong> to the rotation, having just traded for his replacement.\u00a0\u00a0 Reddick was clearly seen as surplus to requirements, despite putting together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddijo01.shtml\">decent 2011 season<\/a>, but you have to wonder if the team is going to be satisfied with Sweeney starting in RF.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keith Law<\/strong> makes a good point during his <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/blog\/_\/name\/law_keith\/id\/7399047\/mlb-red-sox-win-andrew-bailey-trade-now-oakland-wins-long-run\">analysis of the Bailey move<\/a>, saying that adding Bailey is a far better move than paying <strong>Jonathan Papelbon<\/strong> $50M.\u00a0 I agree completely and think that anyone who pays $10M+ per year for a guy who throws 70 innings and who only really has about 50% &#8220;high leverage&#8221; plate appearances (see last year&#8217;s splits for <strong>Mariano Rivera<\/strong> and Papelbon to see that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/split.cgi?id=riverma01&amp;year=2011&amp;t=p\">57%<\/a> of Rivera&#8217;s plate appearances were in &#8220;high&#8221; leverage situations as a high, while Papelbon was at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/split.cgi?id=papeljo01&amp;year=2011&amp;t=p\">47%<\/a>) is just wasting money.\u00a0 Find a hard thrower in your organization (say, like <strong>Drew Storen<\/strong> for the Nats), install him as the closer as a rookie, then ride him til free agency and then cut him loose and start over.\u00a0 Relievers are fungible talents, they come and go, mostly are failed starters since they don&#8217;t need the full repertoire of pitches to be successful, and are cheaper to come by.<\/li>\n<li>(hat tip to ck of the Nats Enquirer): The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/sports\/orioles\/blog\/bal-boras-and-fielder-did-not-meet-with-angelos-on-free-agent-tour-20111230,0,4172980.story\">Baltimore Sun reports<\/a> that <strong>Scott Boras<\/strong> and <strong>Prince Fielder<\/strong> were in the Baltimore\/DC area to meet with an owner not named <strong>Peter Angelos<\/strong>.\u00a0 More links on the topic from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalbaseball.com\/2011\/12\/30\/2671782\/prince-fielder-visit-with-the-washington-nationals\">Federal Baseball<\/a>.\u00a0 Gee, I wonder who it could be?\u00a0 Why would those two fly HERE and not directly to the city of the owner in question, unless the owner of the team in question was either a) the Nationals, or b) an owner of a MLB team who lives in this area but owns a team based elsewhere, or c) an owner of another team just happened to be in DC for some odd reason (odd because Congress is out of session, which would seem to eliminate most any possibly lobbying reason).\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get me wrong; I think <strong>Adam LaRoche<\/strong> can contribute in 2012 and it seems ludicrous to think he can&#8217;t at least get close to his 2010 numbers, but Fielder is a 5+ WAR player who probably makes us the favorite for the NL wild card if we sign him, right now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>General Baseball News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wow, two LOOGY articles in the same day.\u00a0 <strong>Bill James<\/strong> answered a question about the evolution of the LOOGY and posted this link <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/blog\/archives\/4292\">describing its birth<\/a> (apparently by <strong>Tony LaRussa<\/strong> in the 1991 season).\u00a0 I also never knew that the term &#8220;LOOGY&#8221; was coined by none other than <strong>Rob Neyer<\/strong>.\u00a0 And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidethebook.com\/ee\/index.php\/site\/comments\/start_of_the_loogy_era\/\">TangoTiger points<\/a> to some of the same research.\u00a0 Mid 30s lefties everywhere have LaRussa to thank for their extended careers.<\/li>\n<li>Could you imagine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardballtimes.com\/main\/blog_article\/10000-days-since-baseballs-nastiest-beanball-war\/#When:09:33:15\">this happening<\/a> in today&#8217;s game?\u00a0 The first intentional pitch would have resulted in ejections.\u00a0 Certainly modern umpires would not let a pitcher throw pitch after pitch at an opposing batter.\u00a0 Clearly these umpires let this game get out of hand.<\/li>\n<li>Will MLB step in?\u00a0 USAToday&#8217;s <strong>Seth Livingston<\/strong> thinks that the <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/dailypitch\/post\/2011\/12\/andrew-bailey-latest-in-as-salary-dump-to-force-mlbs-hand\/1?csp=34sports&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodaycomSports-TopStories+%28Sports+-+Top+Stories%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">Oakland payroll dumping trades<\/a> this off-season may get the attention of the front office.\u00a0 Hard to see why; <a href=\"https:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/pub?key=0Ah4PW47PiAi-dEotWGhhWEltT3NVWFRTUEdWQWk3YkE&amp;output=html\">according to Cot&#8217;s<\/a> the Athletics are only signed up for around $17M of guaranteed contracts in 2012 right now, before a slew of arbitration cases.\u00a0 They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/nontenders2011\">non-tendered<\/a> 3 of their 10 arbitration cases but kept a couple of their more expensive guys (Cot&#8217;s thinks they had 14 arbitration-eligible players; I havn&#8217;t cross-referenced outrights and DFAs but know they had 10 arb tender decisions).\u00a0 Of those they did tender, they have since traded away <strong>Sweeney<\/strong>, <strong>Gonzalez<\/strong>, <strong>Bailey<\/strong>, <strong>Breslow <\/strong>and <strong>Cahill<\/strong>.\u00a0 Geeze.\u00a0 Baseball-Reference thinks they&#8217;ll get to $50M in payroll; I wonder if they&#8217;ll get to $35m frankly.\u00a0 And, its looking more and more like this could be something like a 50-win team.\u00a0 Things <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.scout.com\/2\/1143564.html\">could get ugly<\/a> in the Bay area in 2012.<\/li>\n<li>This would be a loss for us prospect hounds: <strong>Keith Law<\/strong> is reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com\/blog\/mlbbuzz\/espns_law_on_the_move_again\/9006985\">interviewing for a front-office position<\/a> with the Houston Astros.\u00a0 Law takes a very specific, opinionated viewpoint towards player development, drawing from his experiences in the Toronto organization (which itself during his time took a rather college-heavy approach to the draft which ultimately wasn&#8217;t as successful as the team wanted, ultimately contributing to the end of <strong>JP Ricciardi<\/strong>&#8216;s reign.<\/li>\n<li>An interesting exercise; USA Today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/sports\/baseball\/story\/2011-12-28\/best-players-money-can-buy\/52278662\/1?csp=34sports&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodaycomSports-TopStories+%28Sports+-+Top+Stories%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">builds an unbeatable MLB team<\/a> for the median MLB payroll.\u00a0 Honestly though, I&#8217;m not sure just how challenging this exercise is.\u00a0 If you gave me $86M (the median payroll they used) you should be able to put together TWO such teams.\u00a0 There&#8217;s enough pre-arbitration and arbitration-controlled talent in the league to be able to do the same task for something approaching a $20M payroll.\u00a0 A future blog post?\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>Follow-up on <strong>Alex Rodriguez<\/strong>&#8216;s experimental Germany treatment; this <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/news?slug=jp-passan_alex_rodriguez_knee_blood_treatment_122911\">op-ed piece<\/a> from <strong>Jeff Passan<\/strong> on the blurry line between PEDs and legitimate surgical procedures.\u00a0 The article has a very in-depth description of the A-Rod procedure and raises the question as to what defines a Performance Enhancing Drug?\u00a0 I have had similar discussions; why are Steroids &#8220;bad&#8221; but Cortisone &#8220;good&#8221; in terms of usage?\u00a0 What do Cortisone shots do?\u00a0 They enable a player to play through pain that otherwise may keep him out.\u00a0 Uh &#8230; isn&#8217;t that the definition of a &#8220;performance enhancing&#8221; substance??\u00a0 Steroid&#8217;s aren&#8217;t illegal; they&#8217;re just controlled.\u00a0 But so is cortisone; you can&#8217;t just inject yourself with the stuff without a doctor&#8217;s order.\u00a0 Passan takes things one step further, comparing the healing effects of HGH with these new treatments that A-Rod and <strong>Bartolo Colon<\/strong> got and makes a very good point; the WADA uses 3 categories to define a doping drug and everything we&#8217;ve described here can be argued to fit those criteria (except that only HGH and Steroids have been determined to be &#8220;bad&#8221; by the powers that be).\u00a0 There&#8217;s something inconsistent here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Collegiate\/Prospect News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seedling to the Star&#8217;s scouting report on Braves phenom prospect <strong>Julio Teheran<\/strong>.\u00a0 Teheran&#8217;s stock has slipped somewhat in the past two years, especially given the inevitable comparisons to fellow pitching prospect phenom <strong>Matt Moore<\/strong>.\u00a0 While Moore&#8217;s 2011 MLB debut was nothing short of amazing (including his 7 innings of shutout ball in the playoffs), Teheran posted a 5.03 ERA in about 20 MLB innings throughout 2011.\u00a0 It was bad enough to probably rule Teheran out of the 2012 rotation plans and send him back to repeat AAA.\u00a0 But if he can put things together, he&#8217;ll join an arsenal of young arms in Atlanta that seems set to be their next wave of starters in the ilk of <strong>John Smoltz<\/strong> and <strong>Tom Glavine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>General News;
