Photo unknown via iusport.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is your semi-weekly\/periodic wrap-up of Nats and other baseball news that caught my eye.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Nationals In General<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk about rumors that just won&#8217;t go away: Nationals apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2012\/01\/nationals-emerge-as-favorite-for-fielder.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">remain the favorites<\/a> for <strong>Prince Fielder<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Ken Rosenthal<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/msn.foxsports.com\/mlb\/story\/Prince-Fielder-Washington-Nationals-mlb-hot-stove-free-agency-010212\">says the same<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong>Buster Olney <\/strong>has a <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/blog\/_\/name\/olney_buster\/id\/7427173\/prince-fielder-make-nationals-immediate-playoff-contenders-there-risks-mlb\">nice overview with pros\/cons<\/a> laid out.\u00a0 For me (as discussed in the comments of the previous posts), I think he&#8217;d be a mistake for 8-10 years, but an absolute steal for 3.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2012\/writers\/tom_verducci\/01\/13\/ryan.madson.prince.fielder\/index.html\">some thoughts<\/a> from <strong>Tom Verducci<\/strong>, who thinks the Nats are his destination.\u00a0 And here&#8217;s a post that says one of the 3 candidates for Fielder I identified in this space a few days ago (Toronto), is <a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2012\/01\/12\/blue-jays-not-a-serious-suitor-for-free-agent-prince-fielder\/\">out of the running<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Imagine a lineup that goes like this: Espinosa-Werth-Zimmerman-Fielder-Morse-Ramos-Desmond-Cameron to open the season, and then potentially inject <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> hitting behind Morse and replacing Cameron in the outfield.\u00a0 That&#8217;d be 5 straight home-run hitting threats in the middle of your order, with good L-R balance.\u00a0 I know he&#8217;d be expensive, but that&#8217;s a 95 win offense.\u00a0 It&#8217;d be even better if we got a one-year stop gap hitter to open the year playing RF and who we could flip in trade if Harper comes up sooner than later.<\/li>\n<li>From Jdland.com: the concrete factory across the street from Nats park is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdland.com\/dc\/index.cfm\/3591\/Florida-Rock-Headed-Back-to-Zoning-Commission-With-Changes\/\">finally coming down<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>Whoops: <strong>Zech Zinicola<\/strong> hit with a 50-game suspension for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/nationals_buzz\/2012\/01\/nats-farmhand-zinicola-hit-with-50-game-suspension.html\">non-PED drug abuse<\/a>.\u00a0 Sounds like Marijuana to me.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see the Nats release him after this, his 2nd transgression.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Sickels<\/strong>&#8216; new rankings of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2012\/1\/9\/2693999\/oakland-athletics-top-20-prospects-for-2012\">Oakland A&#8217;s top 20 prospects<\/a>, post trades this off-season.\u00a0\u00a0 6 of the 10 top were acquired in the <strong>Trevor Cahill<\/strong> and <strong>Gio Gonzalez<\/strong> trades, while three more represent Oakland&#8217;s #1 draft picks in 2011 (<strong>Sonny Gray<\/strong>) and 2010 (<strong>Michael Choice<\/strong>) and 2009 (<strong>Grant Green<\/strong>).\u00a0 Say what you will about <strong>Billy Beane<\/strong>, but he&#8217;s clearly building a big-time farm system for the future right now.<\/li>\n<li>A nice review of the <a href=\"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/2011\/12\/30\/shiny-new-penny\/\">Nationals 2012 outlook<\/a> from seamheads.com.<\/li>\n<li>We <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2012\/01\/pirates-sign-doug-slaten.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">lost<\/a> <strong>Doug Slaten<\/strong>.\u00a0 Now he can go be horrible for Pittsburgh.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.masnsports.com\/byron_kerr\/2012\/01\/solis-doing-well-in-recovery-from-elbow-pain-hansen-also-good-news.html\">Good news on both<\/a> <strong>Sammy Solis<\/strong> and <strong>Bobby Hanson<\/strong> from <strong>Byron Kerr.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adam Kilgore<\/strong> says the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/AdamKilgoreWP\/status\/157588485870600194\">team is still talking<\/a> to <strong>Rick Ankiel<\/strong> about coming back as a 4th OF&#8230; I wouldn&#8217;t be totally opposed to that; he&#8217;s essentially the same player we got in <strong>Mike Cameron<\/strong>, right?\u00a0 Only difference seems to be lefty versus righty.<\/li>\n<li>Fun little position-by-position exercise: <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/sweetspot\/post\/_\/id\/19843\/nl-east-showdown\">ranking the NL east teams position by position<\/a> from <strong>David Shoenfield<\/strong>.\u00a0 I must admit though I think he was a bit generous with his Nats rankings in some cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Free Agents\/Player Transaction News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MLBTraderumors is great; they&#8217;ve created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2012\/01\/arbitration-information.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">arbitration tracking pages<\/a> that will &#8220;keep score&#8221; of all the cases coming up in Jan-Feb.<\/li>\n<li>If you believe <strong>Jim Bowden<\/strong>, the Rangers are playing hardball in their <strong>Yu Darvish<\/strong> negotiations.\u00a0 If this falls through &#8230; look for pandemonium both on the <strong>Prince Fielder<\/strong> front and with Darvish next year when he&#8217;s an unrestricted FA and could attract interest from pretty much every team in the league.<\/li>\n<li>Makes sense: Marlins plan to <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/blogs\/scoop-du-jour\/marlins-planning-hard-yoenis-cespedes-111300945.html\">aggressively pursue<\/a> <strong>Yoenis Cespedes<\/strong>.\u00a0 Getting the latest big name Cuban defector can only be a good thing for the franchise as they try to re-build a fan base in a heavily latino\/cuban community.<\/li>\n<li>Well, the\u00a0 Yankees shored up their rotation in one 3 hour period on Friday night; trading for <strong>Michael Pineda<\/strong> and then signing <strong>Hiroki Kuroda<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 They went from having <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.sbnation.com\/2012\/1\/13\/2706133\/hiroki-kuroda-signed-new-york-yankees\">three question marks<\/a> in their rotation to now wondering if <strong>AJ Burnett<\/strong> can hold onto the 5th rotation spot.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s <strong>Keith Law<\/strong>&#8216;s analysis, predictably <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/blog\/_\/name\/law_keith\/id\/7460632\/jesus-montero-michael-pineda-fill-critcal-needs-seattle-new-york\">giving the &#8220;edge&#8221;<\/a> to the Mariners in the deal despite the obvious fact that Pineda is MLB proven while the other three guys in the deal, aren&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Hall of Fame items<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mike Silva<\/strong> becomes one of the very few BBWAA writers with a HoFame vote to publish support for <strong>Jack Morris<\/strong>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll be seeing the inevitable <strong>Craig Calcarerra<\/strong> blog posting questioning Silva&#8217;s IQ for doing so.<\/li>\n<li><strong>David Shoenfield<\/strong> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/sweetspot\/post\/_\/id\/19600\/hall-of-fame-debates-spirited-emotional\">little missive<\/a> on the HoFame, voting procedures and comments on how few players are getting elected these days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chris Jaffe<\/strong> does an excellent job <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardballtimes.com\/main\/article\/next-weeks-cooperstown-election-results-today\/\">predicting HoFame votes<\/a> every year; here&#8217;s his guess on 2012&#8217;s election.\u00a0 Bad news for <strong>Bagwell<\/strong> and <strong>Morris<\/strong>, good news for <strong>Larkin<\/strong> though.<\/li>\n<li>Other interesting HoFame notes: one site in particular collects ballots; here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballthinkfactory.org\/newsstand\/discussion\/2012_hall_of_fame_ballot_collecting_gizmo\/\">a summary of the 80-some ballots<\/a> she has right now.\u00a0 Very good support for Larkin.<\/li>\n<li>No Bagwell votes here; prepare for the ridiculing.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/story\/16697407\/larkin-morris-trammell-deserving-of-vote-on-my-hall-ballot\/rss\"><strong>Danny Knobler<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/story\/16697315\/hall-of-fame-ballot-support-for-larkin-morris-raines-trammell\/rss\"><strong>Scott Miller<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I think i&#8217;m just about fed up with bloggers who see everything in modern baseball through little spreadsheets of data and who never even saw <strong>Jack Morris<\/strong> and <strong>Bert Blyleven<\/strong> tell me I&#8217;m an idiot because i think the former is a better pitcher than the latter.\u00a0 At some point statistics are just that; numbers that prove or disprove whatever your theories are.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t just ignore 20 years of performance and context of playing in the league by boiling down thousands of innings pitched into one number, whether it is ERA+ or WAR or whatever.\u00a0\u00a0 For me, when you talk about whether a player is a Hall of Famer, you look at individual season accomplishments.\u00a0 Morris basically had 15 seasons of full time pitching.\u00a0 In 5 of those seasons he was a top-5 vote getter in the Cy Young; that means in 5 seasons those people who covered baseball that season considered him among the best 5 pitchers in his league.\u00a0\u00a0 In another two seasons he didn&#8217;t finish top 5 but still received votes.\u00a0 He was god-awful his last two seasons, lowering his career totals.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s dozens of examples of him completing games despite having given up 3-4 runs and sitting on 140 pitches.\u00a0 Maybe Morris just needed to pitch in the current era, where he would be taken out in the 7th on a pitch count and then replaced by specialized relievers.\u00a0 Meanwhile Blyleven, in 21 full seasons of starting made exactly TWO all-star games and received comparable Cy Young support 3 times.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll ask again; how can you be considered one of the best of all time if nobody who covered you day in and day out during your career thought you were even among the best of your day??<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jorge Posada<\/strong> announces his retirement; the inevitable &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/msn.foxsports.com\/video\/MLB?vid=27cb23cb-d92b-4c90-a494-3c26e40b21b2\">Is he a Hall of Famer<\/a>&#8221; articles start.\u00a0 Immediate gut reaction from me: yes he&#8217;s a HoFamer.\u00a0 Unlike some of his Yankees dynasty team members (<strong>Bernie Williams<\/strong>, <strong>Andy Pettitte<\/strong>) Posada seems a bit more transcendent in terms of talent and legacy.\u00a0 A quick glance though at his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/posadjo01.shtml\">career stats<\/a> show some of the problems with his eventual candidacy.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a late bloomer; not playing a full-time season til he&#8217;s 25.\u00a0 However for the 10 seasons he had from 25 to 35 he was fantastic; 5 all-stars, 5 Silver Sluggers and two top-6 MVP votes.\u00a0 After he turned 35 though he struggled with health and had a relatively poor final season at the plate.\u00a0 He has no gold gloves and had a reputation for having a very weak throwing arm but had a 121 OPS+ for his career (a great offensive player for a catcher).\u00a0 His compareables in b-r are <strong> <\/strong>heady company (including <strong>Carlton Fisk<\/strong> and <strong>Gabby Hartnett<\/strong>).\u00a0 I guess we&#8217;ll see in 5 years&#8217; time.<\/li>\n<li>Jan 9th 2012: the wait is over.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/hof12\/story\/_\/id\/7443141\/former-cincinnati-reds-great-barry-larkin-elected-baseball-hall-fame\">Only Larkin elected<\/a>, Morris and Bagwell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/awards\/hall-of-fame-ballot-history.shtml\">vote totals<\/a> rise but still not close.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0Aqc4QTMoPrdtdDQxaDYzd1lLOGpOdUdrcnNNNWNXa2c&amp;authkey=CPyuwqIJ&amp;hl=en_US#gid=5\">Spreadsheet of all published\/known hall of fame votes<\/a>, with links to explanations.\u00a0 Interesting to say the least; several blank ballots and several very odd ballots to say the least.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>General Baseball News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Buster Olney<\/strong> continues his rankings of the top 10s of baseball; this time with <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/blog\/_\/name\/olney_buster\/id\/7407182\/ranking-top-10-lineups-mlb\">lineups<\/a>.\u00a0 Predictably its very AL East heavy. Previously he had done rotations, bullpens, infields and outfields.\u00a0 Links to other lists available from this article (ESPN insider only; consider spending $2\/month for it; its worth it).<\/li>\n<li>Buster, after finishing the above rankings, publishes his preliminary <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/blog\/_\/name\/olney_buster\/id\/7410087\/behind-great-defense-dominant-pitching-rays-best-team-baseball-mlb\">2012 top 10 Power Rankings<\/a>.\u00a0 Rays #1, Nationals essentially #11\/&#8221;Best of the Rest.&#8221;\u00a0 Boy this team&#8217;s reputation has come a long ways in just a few short years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeff Passan<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/news?slug=jp-passan_new_year_baseball_a_to_z_010112\">A-to-Z discussion<\/a> on Baseball this off season and in 2012.\u00a0 I link it since I like most everything Passan writes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joe Torre<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/dailypitch\/post\/2012\/01\/joe-torre-resigns-from-mlb-to-pursue-dodgers\/1?csp=34sports&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodaycomSports-TopStories+%28Sports+-+Top+Stories%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">joins an ownership group<\/a> chasing the LA Dodgers &#8230; but not the one that <strong>Stan Kasten<\/strong> is heading.\u00a0 Bad move; I think Kasten&#8217;s a shoe-in to be <strong>Selig<\/strong>&#8216;s pick.<\/li>\n<li>This could have a bigger effect than the loss of <strong>Albert Pujols<\/strong>: St. Louis pitching coach <strong>Dave Duncan<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/msn.foxsports.com\/mlb\/story\/st-louis-cardinals-pitching-coach-dave-duncan-will-not-return-for-2012-season-due-to-family-reasons-010512\">taking a leave of absence<\/a> from the team to care for his ailing wife.\u00a0 Duncan has been such a miracle worker for reclamation project starters over the past few years that its hard to imagine the Cardinals pitching staff not to take a dent.<\/li>\n<li>The Chicago Cubs franchise potentially takes another hit: <strong>Starlin Castro<\/strong> reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2012\/01\/06\/report-starlin-castro-accused-of-sexual-assault\/\">accused of sexual assault<\/a>.\u00a0 Castro returned home for the off-season and isn&#8217;t in the country; could this incident prevent him from getting a work visa in 2012?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jonah Keri<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantland.com\/story\/_\/id\/7422765\/jonah-keri-looks-curtain-alleged-woes-mlb-second-class-franchises\">takes on one of my favorite topics<\/a>; calling out <strong>Billy Beane<\/strong> and showing how he&#8217;s closer to being an incompetent GM than he is to his vaunted reputation as the game&#8217;s best GM.<\/li>\n<li>Great article on Baseball Prospectus about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballprospectus.com\/article.php?articleid=15797\">SLAP tears<\/a> in baseball players (normally pitchers).\u00a0 The article is very heavy on medical jargon but talks about the different types of tears and surgical remedies.\u00a0 This is the injury that <strong>Chris Carpenter<\/strong> had and recovered from (though I&#8217;m pretty sure he ALSO had Tommy John surgery too).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/2012\/01\/03\/a-unique-look-at-big-league-baseball-is-a-must-have-for-seamheads\/\">Nice book review <\/a>for &#8220;A Unique Look at Big League Baseball.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Collegiate\/Prospect News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2012 AL rookie of the year favorite <strong>Matt Moore<\/strong>, profiled at <a href=\"http:\/\/seedlingstostars.com\/2012\/01\/03\/the-seedlings-to-stars-2012-top-100-prospects-4-matt-moore\/\">seedlingstostars.com<\/a>.\u00a0 This is part of a series of prospect reviews, counting down to #1 and Moore is ranked #4 &#8230; but the author immediately caveats it by saying that any of the top 4 could be #1.\u00a0 I talked about Moore after his playoff start <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=2669\">on this site<\/a>, coming away with a Wow factor that I havn&#8217;t had since <strong>Strasburg<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Scout.com&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/tigers.scout.com\/a.z?s=273&amp;p=9&amp;c=12&amp;yr=2012&amp;nid=287&amp;lnid=287&amp;rc=4&amp;pid=88&amp;pg=1\">top 100 Prospect list for 2012<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> #3 behind Moore and <strong>Mike Trout<\/strong>.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t argue there.\u00a0 Other Nats on the list include <strong>Anthony Rendon<\/strong> (#56).\u00a0 <strong>AJ Cole<\/strong> (#76) and <strong>Brad Peacock<\/strong> (#85) would have made us a bit more respectable pre-Gonzalez trade.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s hoping that the Nats &#8220;other&#8221;
