{"id":4161,"date":"2012-05-07T10:29:48","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T14:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=4161"},"modified":"2012-05-07T10:29:48","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T14:29:48","slug":"what-are-we-going-to-do-when-wang-comes-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=4161","title":{"rendered":"What are we going to do when Wang comes back?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a word: I have no idea.<\/p>\n<p>While the rest of Nats nation talks about the fallout of <strong>Jayson Werth<\/strong>&#8216;s broken wrist (most of this post was written before last night&#8217;s debacle), I had been thinking about this topic: when <strong>Chien-Ming Wang<\/strong> exhausts his 30 day rehab assignment, what in the world is this team going to do with him?<\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m correct about rehab assignment rules while on the 15-day DL, players have 30 days once they appear in a minor league game.\u00a0 Wang&#8217;s first ML appearance was in Potomac on <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalsprospects.com\/2012\/04\/last-night-in-woodbridge-65\/\">Apr 29th<\/a>, and then he <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalsprospects.com\/2012\/05\/saturdays-news-notes-25\/\">pitched 6 innings<\/a> on Friday night in Hagerstown.\u00a0 As has been reported in both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/nationals-journal\/post\/chien-ming-wang-throws-six-innings-in-rehab-start\/2012\/05\/05\/gIQAEnAr2T_blog.html?wprss=rss_nationals-journal\">local media<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2012\/05\/05\/chien-ming-wang-close-to-rejoining-nationals-after-strong-rehab-start\/\">national<\/a>, Wang&#8217;s 6 inning stint represented a big step forward in the pitcher&#8217;s ability to return to the majors. \u00a0Now, perhaps this isn&#8217;t a problem for another month or so, but both these reports seemed to indicate that Wang was &#8220;nearly ready&#8221; to return to the majors. \u00a0Problem is, the Nationals really don&#8217;t have anywhere to put him.<\/p>\n<p>As everyone knows, the Nats currently have the best pitching staff in baseball by most statistical measures.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve rocketed out to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/WSN\/2012.shtml\">18-10 start<\/a>, winning 8 of our 9 series so far, on the strength of starting pitching.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s no logical starter that we should replace right now.\u00a0 <strong>Strasburg<\/strong> just won NL pitcher of the month, <strong>Gonzalez<\/strong> is making all the &#8220;Nats paid too much&#8221; pundits eat their words thus far with a stellar start, <strong>Zimmermann<\/strong> is allowing a miniscule .992 WHIP right now (even after counting for May 6th inflation), and <strong>Detwiler<\/strong> is pitching better than any of them now to little fan fare, with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/WSN\/2012.shtml\">3-1, 1.59 era<\/a>, .988 whip and a staff-best 241 ERA+. \u00a0Arguably the &#8220;worst&#8221; of our starters is also our most expensive: <strong>Edwin Jackson<\/strong>. \u00a0Of course, the word &#8220;worst&#8221; is only understood in context:\u00a0if it weren&#8217;t for one first inning meltdown on April 19th, Jackson&#8217;s ERA would be 2.34 instead of its current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/gl.cgi?id=jacksed01&amp;t=p&amp;year=2012\">3.69<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re <strong>Davey Johnson<\/strong>, you don&#8217;t possibly dare disrupt the existing rotation do you? \u00a0I wouldn&#8217;t. \u00a0But, Wang needs to go somewhere. \u00a0Can you put him in the bullpen? \u00a0Doubtful; he&#8217;s a starter coming off a shoulder injury and probably needs to be on a set schedule of throwing. \u00a0I doubt he&#8217;s able to jump up and be ready to enter a high-leverage reliever situation with 8 pitches to get ready. \u00a0Do you send Detwiler to the pen? \u00a0He&#8217;s the least experienced of the 5 starters we have; the other 4 have long since established their spots. \u00a0Do you move Jackson to the bullpen? \u00a0That&#8217;d make for an awful expensive middle reliever. \u00a0Wang has no options (nor does Detwiler or <strong>Gorzelanny <\/strong>for that matter, logical choices to move up or down to make way), so they all have to find room on the active roster. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think Wang is trade-bait; who would give up anything other than a marginal prospect for him based on his injury past?<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I&#8217;m expecting some 15-day DL hijinks to ensue if\/when the situation comes to loggerheads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a word: I have no idea.
