{"id":6645,"date":"2013-05-17T07:49:14","date_gmt":"2013-05-17T11:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=6645"},"modified":"2016-02-21T07:10:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-21T12:10:16","slug":"mid-spring-update-on-local-draft-prospects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=6645","title":{"rendered":"Mid-spring update on local draft prospects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High Schools are heading into post-season tournaments and local prep players have had their chances to make impressions through the Spring HS season. \u00a0How are our local prep phenoms faring this year, and what players with Virginia ties may feature prominently in the upcoming MLB draft?<\/p>\n<p>Note; it is difficult to find updated stats on Prep players. \u00a0I tried. \u00a0If you know where to find reliable prep hitting and pitching stats, let me know. \u00a0So there&#8217;s not much in the way of stats here unless they&#8217;re college players. \u00a0For all the players below I&#8217;ve listed if they appear in the latest top-100 draft prospect rankings from two reliable sources: <strong>Keith Law<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/9255085\/mark-appel-jonathan-gray-kris-bryant-top-prospects-2013-mlb-draft\">top-100 draft list<\/a> and\u00a0BaseballAmerica&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/2013-top-100-draft-prospects-may-10-jonathan-gray-tops-mark-appel-for-top-sot\/\">top 100 list<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/2013-top-250-draft-prospects-may-17-jonathan-gray-takes-top-spot\/\">top 250 list<\/a>.\u00a0 Instead of re-linking over and over, i&#8217;ll refer to these two lists in shorthand via the links here.<\/p>\n<p>First, quick updates on the players mentioned in my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=6271\">March 2013 posting<\/a> on 4 local players:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andy McGuire<\/strong>: SS\/3B: leading Madison HS in Vienna to a 19-1 record (with 19 consecutive wins) heading into the District tournament and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/all-met\/statistics\/baseball-rankings.html\">#1 local ranking by the Washington Post<\/a>. \u00a0Madison is also an honorable mention in the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatodayhss.com\/rankings\/super-25-baseball-2013\">USA Today national rankings<\/a>.\u00a0 I asked Law in his <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/sportsnation\/chat\/_\/id\/47998\/mlb-insider-keith-law\">5\/16\/13 chat<\/a> about McGuire&#8217;s draft status (he&#8217;s regularly in the lower 50 of pundit&#8217;s top 100 draft prospects for this year, implying a mid 2nd round pick) but Law is &#8220;hearing&#8221; 4th round, which he&#8217;s surprised by and may indicate that McGuire will honor his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/all-met\/recruit-watch\/boys\/Baseball\/index.html\">U. Texas committment<\/a>. \u00a0Draft Rankings: Law #74\/BA #196. \u00a06\/6\/13 update: some <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballnewshound.com\/?p=4561&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BaseballNewsHound+%28Baseball+News+Hound%29\">video of McGuire<\/a> at this link; just watching him run and move and his body type I&#8217;m immediately thinking he&#8217;s going to struggle to stay at SS, echoing what scouts say.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alec Grosser<\/strong>: RHP TC Williams: Nothing else has really popped up about Grosser after the initial flurry of articles, and he&#8217;s listed as &#8220;Signed&#8221; and committed to George Mason. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/players\/playerprofile.aspx?ID=298829\">PerfectGame<\/a> has his best measured fastball at 92, ranging 89-92. \u00a0That&#8217;s still pretty good and I&#8217;m guessing he&#8217;ll head to George Mason to see where his arm takes him. \u00a0His HS has not had the success one would expect with a dominant arm, sitting at around .500 heading into the post-season. \u00a0Not ranked by Law\/BA #158.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matt McPhearson<\/strong>: OF with Riverdale Baptist popped up on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2013\/5\/3\/4294320\/2013-mlb-draft-atlantic-region-report\">MinorLeagueBall&#8217;s Mid-Atlantic report recently<\/a> with the note that he has &#8220;game changing&#8221; speed. \u00a0He&#8217;s still listed as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/all-met\/recruit-watch\/boys\/Baseball\/index.html\">&#8220;Verbal&#8221; Commit to U. Miami<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen him as a <a href=\"http:\/\/mlbdraftinsider.com\/2013\/03\/the-mock-2013-volume-ii\/\">late 1st rounder on some mock drafts<\/a>. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a good scouting report on him from <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballnewshound.com\/?p=4483&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BaseballNewsHound+%28Baseball+News+Hound%29\">BaseballHounds.com<\/a>. \u00a0Lastly there&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=54qt6hyOHtA\">scouting video online of him<\/a>, showing a good bat from the left-hand side and with some amazing speed stats: a verified 6.2 in the 60 yard dash and home-to-first in less than 3.8 seconds. \u00a0As the articles say; that&#8217;s Crazy fast. \u00a0 He&#8217;s one of only three guys with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/ask-ba-which-draft-prospects-have-80-tools\/\">&#8220;80&#8221; scouting grade<\/a> in this year&#8217;s class per <strong>Jim Callis<\/strong> (the other two being <strong>Jonathan Gray<\/strong>\u2019s fastball, and <strong>Kris Bryant<\/strong>\u2019s power, and those two guys are both going in the top 3 of the 2013 draft). The only knock on him may be his size (just 5&#8217;10&#8221;) but he profiles as a prototypical leadoff\/center fielder. \u00a0Law ranked #62\/BA #136.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thomas Rogers<\/strong>, LHP injured all year is still verbally committed to UNC. \u00a0Nothing new to report. \u00a0Not ranked in either Law\/BA&#8217;s lists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A couple of new names that I&#8217;ve taken note of locally, by virtue of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/all-met\/recruit-watch\/boys\/Baseball\/index.html\">college commitments to major Baseball programs<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Errol Robinson<\/strong>, SS from St. Johns, signed to play at Ole Miss. \u00a0He was #92 in BaseballAmerica&#8217;s top 100 pre-season draft prospects and had a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/blog\/draft\/2013\/03\/draft-qa-errol-robinson\/\">Q&amp;A with them in March 2013<\/a>. \u00a0His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=282206\">PerfectGame profile<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Articles\/View.aspx?article=8399\">draft write ups<\/a> indicate he&#8217;s a quick-bat SS who has the capability of going in the top 5 rounds. \u00a0NatsGM&#8217;s <strong>Ryan Sullivan<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/natsgm.com\/2013\/05\/07\/natsgm-2013-inaugural-mlb-draft-column-initial-impressions-scouting-errol-robinson\/\">scouted him about a week ago<\/a> and wrote it up here.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.247sports.com\/Article\/2013-SS-commitment-Errol-Robinson-talks-about-Ole-Miss--79584\">Based on this interview<\/a> (where he talks about how his Mom, Dad and sister all attended or currently are at Ole Miss), I&#8217;m pretty sure he&#8217;s going to honor his college commitment despite any potential drafting. \u00a0 Not ranked in either Law\/BA&#8217;s lists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alec Bettinger<\/strong>, a RHP with Hylton HS in Woodbridge, has a verbal commitment to UVA. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=282127\">PerfectGame<\/a> has him with about a 90 mph fastball. \u00a0He&#8217;s &#8220;small but athletic&#8221; per this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2013\/5\/3\/4294320\/2013-mlb-draft-atlantic-region-report\">MinorLeagueBall<\/a> article (6&#8217;0&#8243; 165lbs), which may have him leaning towards a future professional bullpen role. \u00a06&#8217;0&#8243; is really on the low-end for what scouts like to see in a starter (think <strong>Tim Hudson<\/strong><strong> is considered undersized and he&#8217;s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hudsoti01.shtml\">6&#8217;1&#8243; 175lbs<\/a>), so it seems likely he&#8217;ll take his fastball to college to see how it develops. \u00a0Not ranked in either Law\/BA&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other Virginia-connected big names being talked about in the draft (thanks to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2013\/5\/9\/4316638\/nationals-mod-1\">MinorLeagueBall article and comments<\/a> for crowd-sourced Virginia-connected names to target)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conner Jones<\/strong>, RHP with Great Bridge HS, the HS of <strong>Justin Upton<\/strong> down in Chesapeake. \u00a0Jones is leading his HS to a current 19-0 record, good enough for being ranked 18th by USAToday\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/high-school\/high-school-top-25-may-7\/\">22nd by BaseballAmeric<\/a>a in the state title game. \u00a0He&#8217;s easily the best Virginia draft prospect this year and is the only guy that <a href=\"http:\/\/mlbdraftinsider.com\/2013\/05\/the-board-2013-volume-vi\/\">MLBDraftInsider.com<\/a> has going in the top 50 of their mock drafts right now. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=282119\">PG has him at 93mph<\/a> with a <a href=\"http:\/\/virginia.247sports.com\/Article\/Jones-will-honor-UVa-commitment-130143\">UVA committment<\/a> that he has told scouts he intends to honor, but he&#8217;s getting back-of-the-1st round notice for the upcoming draft. \u00a0As scouts have noted, these &#8220;verbal commitments&#8221; are pretty meaningless unless a player specifically fails to file one specific item prior to the draft (which automatically invalidates them; i can&#8217;t recall what it is right now but believe its a drug test). \u00a0So we&#8217;ll see. \u00a0Law ranked #29\/BA ranked #33.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bobby Wahl<\/strong>: RHP from Ole Miss, a good sized Righty who is Ole Miss&#8217; Friday night starter and who hails from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olemisssports.com\/sports\/m-basebl\/mtt\/bobby_wahl_726153.html\">Springfield, VA<\/a> (West Springfield HS). \u00a0He&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/9255085\/mark-appel-jonathan-gray-kris-bryant-top-prospects-2013-mlb-draft\">9-0 with a 1.43 ERA<\/a> on the season, quite a stat line considering who he&#8217;s typically going up against (the #1 starters of other SEC teams, easily the best baseball conference in the land). \u00a0Law ranked #66\/BA ranked #36. \u00a0If he last til the late 2nd round as Law suggests, he could be right around where the Washington Nationals could draft him with their first pick (#68 overall). \u00a0However, <strong>John Sickels<\/strong>\/MinorLeagueBall&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2013\/5\/16\/4335316\/2013-mlb-mock-draft-version-two-john-sickels-may-16\">latest mock draft<\/a> has Wahl going #31, more consistent with BA&#8217;s rankings. \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t seem likely he&#8217;ll fall to the Nats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Austin Nicely<\/strong>, LHP from Spotswood HS in Grottoes, Virginia (way down I-81 by my alma Mater James Madison University). \u00a0 PG has him as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=285671\">lefty who throws 90<\/a> and is committed to UVA. \u00a0Law #78\/Not in BA&#8217;s top 250, a huge disparity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chad Pinder<\/strong>, 3B Virginia Tech. \u00a0Described as a plus-defender, decent bat. \u00a0His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokiesports.com\/baseball\/stats\/2013\/?season\">season batting stats<\/a> aren&#8217;t that impressive as compared to his teammates, so he must be some defender. \u00a0If he can really move to SS like the scouting reports say and still hit for average and some power, he&#8217;s a good 2nd-3rd round prospect. \u00a0Law ranked #86\/BA ranked #53.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jack Roberts<\/strong>, RHP from James River HS in Richmond, committed to UVA and per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokiesports.com\/baseball\/stats\/2013\/?season\">PG<\/a> gets up to 92mph. \u00a0 Big guy (6&#8217;4&#8243; 200lbs) who I&#8217;d bet can add more velocity if he goes to college. \u00a0 If he threw a couple ticks higher he&#8217;d probably be a big time prospect. \u00a0Not ranked in either Law\/BA&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zach Rice<\/strong>, LHP from Suffolk (outside of Norfolk), tall lanky kid who slings it 89 from the left hand side. \u00a0Committed to UNC. \u00a0Worth mentioning since he&#8217;s been recruited by the best team in the country. \u00a0Not ranked in either Law\/BA&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kyle Crockett<\/strong>, LHP from UVA.\u00a0 He&#8217;s UVA&#8217;s closer (and a HS teammate of fellow draft prospect Chad Pinder).\u00a0 He throws 90-92 from the left side but has impeccable control; he has just one unintentional walk in 43 innings this year while getting more than a K\/inning.\u00a0 Despite being used as a reliever, I can see someone moving him back to the rotation to see if his stuff can play for 6-7 innings at a time.\u00a0 Not ranked by Law\/BA #103.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conclusion: Looking at this list, UVA stands to lose an awful lot of pitching recruits if these guys don&#8217;t honor their commitments. \u00a0Bettinger, Jones, Nicely and Roberts are all UVA commits. \u00a0But imagine that staff in a couple years if they all go to college. \u00a0Phew.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/draft\/2013-state-draft-report-virginia\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High Schools are heading into post-season tournaments and local prep players have had their chances to make impressions through the Spring HS season. \u00a0How are our local prep phenoms faring this year, and what players with Virginia ties may feature prominently in the upcoming MLB draft?
