Photo via pennlive.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I enjoyed writing about our local players and their draft prospects in 2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=6877\">full 2013 draft results for players with DC\/MD\/VA ties here<\/a>).\u00a0 So here we go for a similar look in for 2014. \u00a0Believe it or not, local High Schools kick off play this week, despite the 6 inches of snow we just got. \u00a0Perfect Game just released their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/all_americans\/2014\/atlantic.aspx\">pre-season All-Atlantic Region team<\/a>\u00a0(and the Washington Post All-Met team did a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/03\/13\/area-seniors-selected-to-perfect-game-preseason-atlantic-region-baseball-team\/\">nice review of it<\/a>); \u00a0it\u00a0\u00a0includes some names listed below in our local section.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll talk about local prep kids, then MD\/VA college prospects and then branch out to a larger MD\/VA prep collection of players mentioned on various draft prep lists (links to which are at the bottom).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some names to keep an eye on for the 2014 season:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Washington DC Area Local Prep Players<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Jacob Bukauskas<\/b><strong><\/strong>, a 16-yr old rising senior (he reclassified to skip a year of HS) who plays for Stone Bridge HS in Ashburn, is already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=296192\">up to 93 on the gun<\/a> in showcase events and is going to graduate early to qualify for the 2014 draft.\u00a0 He is committed (incredibly early) to UNC, but you generally don&#8217;t graduate HS a year early so you can go play 3 years in college. \u00a0#162 on MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Justin Morris<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=282041\">C from DeMatha HS<\/a>\u00a0who plays for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/draft\/evoshield-canes-win-perfect-game-wwba-world-championship\/\">newly crowned 2013 PerfectGame national champions<\/a>\u00a0EvoShield Canes. \u00a0He&#8217;s a Maryland commit but may improve his draft stock with a strong 2014 spring. \u00a0#295 on minorleagueball&#8217;s list. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tommy Doyle<\/strong> is a big (6&#8217;6&#8243;) RHP from my home town of Vienna, playing at Flint Hill Academy in Oakton.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=305746\">PG has him at 91<\/a> and he&#8217;s committed to UVA.\u00a0 I wonder if the competition he&#8217;ll face at the small private school Flint Hill will hamper scouting efforts. \u00a0Not in minorleagueball&#8217;s top 300. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brodie Leftridge<\/strong>, a CF from Highland, MD (outside of Columbia) but going to local power St. Johns Prep. \u00a0Committed to Tennessee. \u00a0 Profiles as a leadoff\/CF type; ran a sub 6.6 60 per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=289285\">perfect game<\/a>. \u00a0Ranked #256 on MinorleagueBall.com. \u00a0\u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Slim pickings of local HS guys this year unfortunately. \u00a0I may have to venture out to Ashburn to see Bukauskas throw.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>College Guys in MD\/VA:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Derek Fisher<\/strong>\u00a0is a lefty corner outfielder at UVA who passed up 6th round money out of HS and now projects as a possible mid 1st rounder. \u00a0Law has him higher than others, ranked 14th on his top 50. \u00a0MLBDraftInsider has him 16th, as does minorleagueball. \u00a0But we have seen relative talent ranking does not always equate to draft positioning in the modern bonus-limit era.\u00a0 Minorleaguebaseball.com posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2014\/2\/2\/5365054\/2014-mlb-draft-profile-derek-fisher-of-virginia\">this profile of Fisher<\/a> in early Feb, with a pretty detailed overview of his game and a prediction for middle-of-the-first round. \u00a0Nonetheless, he profiles as a good college bat in a draft that doesn&#8217;t have a ton of them, and he&#8217;ll probably go high.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark Zagunas<\/strong>, C from Virginia Tech, #41 on MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nick Howard<\/strong>, RHP from UVA, #111 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list. \u00a0He&#8217;s a weekend starter, but may be in trouble of losing his spot thanks to two standout sophomore starters who look to be your friday\/saturday guys and the addition of freshman\u00a0<strong>Connor Jones<\/strong> (who was a 1st round talent last year out of HS).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon Downes<\/strong>, CF from UVA, #145 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mike Papi<\/strong>,1B\/corner OF from UVA,\u00a0#176 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Troy Stokes<\/strong>, OF from UMaryland, #209 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon Cogswell<\/strong>, ss\/2b from UVA, ranked #225 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><b>K.J. Hockaday<\/b>, SS from Harford Community College (which is in Bel Air, MD; I had to google it). \u00a0#235 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jake Stinnett<\/strong>, sr RHP from UMaryland, has started the season strong and is <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/sportsnation\/chat\/_\/id\/50332\/mlb-insider-keith-law\">getting some notice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Five players in the top 225 draft prospects on UVA&#8217;s squad; no wonder they&#8217;re getting some heady pre-season praise (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/college-preseason-top-25-teams-1-5\/\">#1 on Baseball America&#8217;s pre-season rankings<\/a>, ahead of NC State which boasts two potential top 5 overall picks). \u00a0<strong>Keith Law<\/strong> wrote specifically about <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/blog\/mlb-draft\/post\/_\/id\/1299\/virginia-loaded-with-draft-talent\">UVA&#8217;s talent pool 2\/25\/14<\/a>, saying that they&#8217;ll likely have their top five guys drafted in the first 3 rounds this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">High School MD and VA Guys, from around the rest of the State<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Charlie Cody<\/strong>\u00a0is a 3B from the same Great Bridge HS in Chesapeake that just graduated\u00a0<strong>Connor Jones<\/strong>.\u00a0 He&#8217;s committed to UVA.\u00a0 Sullivan has him as the #34 HS prospect in the country in mid 2013.\u00a0 He is known for his speed: a 6.6 60 time.\u00a0 It should be interesting to see how he fares this spring and whether his stock rises enough to merit a top draft pick. \u00a0Here&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/baseballinstinct.com\/2013\/11\/04\/prospect-video-charlie-cody-3b-great-bridge-va-high-school\/?utm_source=feedly\">some video<\/a>\u00a0of a couple at-bats from baseballinstinct.com. \u00a0Ranked only\u00a0#208 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeff Harding<\/strong>\u00a0is a senior RHP from Cambridge, MD committed to South Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=295601\">PG has him up to 94<\/a>\u00a0on the gun but he&#8217;s really undersized (listed as 5&#8217;11&#8221; 165).\u00a0 Sullivan lists him as #44 HS prospect in the nation in mid 2013. \u00a0 Minorleague ball has him at #75. \u00a0He seems like a good bet to head to school.\u00a0 Fair or not, pitchers are considered too small these days unless they&#8217;re 6&#8217;4&#8243;. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><b>Hunter Williams<\/b>\u00a0is a two-way lefty player from Cosby HS in Chesterfield, VA who has skills both on the mound at at the plate.\u00a0 He&#8217;s limited to first base in the field, which may make it tougher for him to get drafted and developed.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=296824\">91 on the gun<\/a>.\u00a0 Another UNC commit, it should be interesting to see which way he focuses. \u00a0Minorleagueball has him at #103. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong><b>Jack Gerstenmaier<\/b><\/strong> is a SS from Freeman HS in Richmond with a UVA commit. \u00a0\u00a0#232 on\u00a0MinorleagueBall&#8217;s list. \u00a0\u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Devon Fisher<\/strong> is a solid catching prospect from Portsmouth, VA who is either at Greenbriar Christian Academy (a decent baseball development school) or Western Branch (per PG).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=295651\">UVA committed<\/a>.\u00a0 He&#8217;s rising in the ranks by virtue of good showcase efforts. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hunter Taylor<\/strong> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=295607\">C from a small HS<\/a> on the Delmarva peninsula in Olney, VA (which I had to look up), who also plays with EvoShield and is committed to South Carolina. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chase Pinder<\/strong> (brother of Va Tech 2013 2nd rounder\u00a0<strong>Chad Pinder<\/strong>) is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=336491\">senior SS<\/a>\u00a0from Poquoson, VA,\u00a0committed to Clemson. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Lane<\/strong> is a taller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=349902\">SS\/3B prospect<\/a> also from Great Bridge HS in Chesapeake, committed to Florida. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Troy Stokes<\/strong> is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/Players\/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=305219\">undersized OF<\/a> with power from Calvert Hall College in Baltimore with a Maryland commit. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Derek Casey<\/strong> is an RHP from Mechanicsville, VA with a UVA commit. \u00a0Ranked #223 on MinorleagueBall.com. \u00a0Pre-season PG all-Atlantic 1st \u00a0team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lots of local guys on EvoShield; click here\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/canesbaseball.net\/canes-alumni\/\">http:\/\/canesbaseball.net\/canes-alumni\/<\/a>\u00a0for a look at their alumni. \u00a0AAU\/Travel baseball is taking over the world. \u00a0Also, every guy listed here was on PG&#8217;s All-Atlantic team, so that&#8217;s clearly a good list to start from for prep interest.<\/p>\n<p>A reminder;
