{"id":8744,"date":"2014-04-10T09:19:20","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T13:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8744"},"modified":"2014-04-10T09:19:20","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T13:19:20","slug":"nationals-2014-walk-on-music-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8744","title":{"rendered":"Nationals 2014 Walk-on music review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the home opener, when\u00a0<strong>Nate McLouth<\/strong> came to bat we were stopped in our tracks by his walk-up music: &#8220;<em>Kyrie&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>by 80&#8217;s band\u00a0<em>Mister Mister<\/em>. \u00a0My wife and I immediately thought this was a rather odd choice.<\/p>\n<p>It made me wonder: should we critique every one of the Nats&#8217; batter&#8217;s walk-up songs? \u00a0Of course we should!<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the team <a href=\"http:\/\/washington.nationals.mlb.com\/fan_forum\/ballpark_music.jsp?c_id=was\">lists each player&#8217;s 2014 walk-up music<\/a> for us on their official MLB.com page. \u00a0And, here&#8217;s some research by fellow blog DistrictSportsPage on this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/districtsportspage.com\/washington-nationals-walk-up-music-2014\/22487\">walk-up songs<\/a> (and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/districtsportspage.com\/washington-nationals-walk-up-music-2013\/17085\" target=\"_blank\">2013&#8217;s walk-up songs<\/a>) for comparison purposes (note; the official website list isn&#8217;t accurate according to those actually listening to and Soundhounding the songs).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some thoughts on each player&#8217;s selection (we&#8217;re only going on their primary\/1st at bat selection). \u00a0We&#8217;ll list this in the rough batting order and then tack on the bench guys. \u00a0And I&#8217;ll give my personal, baseless, unscientific &#8220;grade&#8221; for the song from a crowd-involvement and song-selection standpoint.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Starters<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Denard Span<\/strong>: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9gCzP3XtWYw\"><em>Gotta Have It<\/em><\/a>&#8221; by Kanye West\/Jay-Z. \u00a0Fitting song to start; last year he used a selection of hip-hop songs, but not really a big crowd involver. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: D<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G-QRSr3Oo_A\">Flower<\/a><\/em>&#8221; by Moby. \u00a0A repeat from last year. \u00a0 Interesting selection for the young Harper; he doesn&#8217;t seem to be the typical Moby fan, but the song is catchy and unique. \u00a0He also uses a slew of different songs from many other genres for subsequent at-batss. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: B-<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan Zimmerman<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/0hiUuL5uTKc\" target=\"_blank\">This Is How We Do It<\/a><\/em>&#8221; by\u00a0Montell Jordan. \u00a0His 2014 actual song differs from the official website; I like this pick. \u00a0A familar song, if not a big sing-along song.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: B-<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adam LaRoche<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/6HHtsyXTYB8\" target=\"_blank\">The Only Way I Know<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Jason Aldean and Eric Church. \u00a0Also fitting; LaRoche is a ranch-owning, game-hunting good ole-boy. \u00a0And he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/music\/post\/_\/id\/1837\/adam-laroches-unlikely-country-star-pals\">buddies with the singer Aldean<\/a>. \u00a0So he continues to use his songs as he did in 2013. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade C+<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jayson Werth<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=I7CajAeTJXM\" target=\"_blank\">Warehouse<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Dave Matthews Band. \u00a0This is the crowd-favorite where everyone calls out, &#8220;Wooh!&#8221; after each interlude. \u00a0Of course, I can&#8217;t figure out where in the song that occurs from the video. \u00a0Werth also uses &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nhSc8qVMjKM&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Werewolves of London<\/a><\/em>&#8221; periodically (of course). \u00a0Brilliant.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Grade: B+<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ian Desmond<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/U0-xdTqdvEQ\" target=\"_blank\">One Sixteen<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Trip Lee (feat. KB &amp; Andy Mineo). \u00a0Does not seem fitting for him, but clearly he likes this genre of hip-hop\/rap since his alternates from last year are by and large the same kinds of songs. \u00a0Unfortunately for Desmond I&#8217;m a middle-aged white guy and can&#8217;t stand modern hip-hop. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: D<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Anthony Rendon: &#8220;<\/strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/VZ5X6xDC6Js\" target=\"_blank\">No Competition<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Bun B. Feat. Raekwon &amp; Kobe. \u00a0Eh. \u00a0Don&#8217;t like it, don&#8217;t get it. \u00a0I will say this: I liked his song from last year moreso (&#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/_CL6n0FJZpk\" target=\"_blank\">Still D.R.E.<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Dr. Dre\/Snoop Dogg, which you&#8217;d recognize if you ever saw the movie\u00a0<em>Training Day). \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: D<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wilson Ramos:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/e4FzG7Y0RCU\" target=\"_blank\">Wepa<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Gloria Estefan. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure if he&#8217;s still using this (its a holdover from 2013) since he got hurt so quickly, but its got a good dance beat and latino flavor. \u00a0 No offense to Lobaton&#8217;s selections, but lets hope we&#8217;re hearing more Gloria Estefan sooner than later. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: B<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Bench Guys<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nate McClouth<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-xIzf-2OVsI\" target=\"_blank\">Kyrie<\/a><\/em>&#8221; by Mister Mister. \u00a0Man, I&#8217;m sorry. I know\u00a0<strong>Michael Morse<\/strong> made retro 80&#8217;s songs hip with his selection of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iRYdBOo7_ow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Take On Me<\/em><\/a>&#8221; (by the way, being in the stadium when 40,000 people were &#8220;singing&#8221; gave me goose-bumps that I still get thinking about it to this day), but this song is awful. \u00a0You gotta find something else. \u00a0How about some Kenny Loggins or the Top Gun theme, if we&#8217;re stuck in the 80s? \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: F<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Danny Espinosa<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/mVQpfoqsY8Q\" target=\"_blank\">Outside<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Staind. \u00a0Big fan, especially after his 2013 choice as well (from Cage the Elephant).\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Grade: B<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jose Lobaton<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/xQd7lUtTBQg\" target=\"_blank\">Mi Chica Ideal<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Chico &amp; Nacho. \u00a0Fast, catchy. \u00a0Can&#8217;t argue with it. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: B<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kevin Frandsen<\/strong>: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fmXLzY8kbYA\" target=\"_blank\">Snow (Hey Oh)<\/a><strong>&#8221; <\/strong>by\u00a0Red Hot Chili Peppers. \u00a0 You&#8217;ve heard this song, even if you have no idea who RHCP is (hint: they were a serious underground 80s sensation but are now totoally mainstream and played the Superbowl Halftime show this year and actually wore clothes!) \u00a0 I like it; even if it seems a bit slow-paced. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: B-<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tyler Moore<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/prgUesyObqs\" target=\"_blank\">Drivin\u2019 Around Song<\/a>&#8220;<\/em>\u00a0by Colt Ford feat. Jason Aldean (at least according to the Nats website; he hasn&#8217;t had a home AB yet). \u00a0We see Moore&#8217;s heritage here; Mississippi born and bread. \u00a0Loves his country music. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: C<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scott Hairston<\/strong>: &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/6ZkkFYfh8V0\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Sky<\/a><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by Common. \u00a0Not my cup of tea; not really a crowd-engager either. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Grade: D<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sandy Leon<\/strong>: I have no idea; has anyone seen an at-bat by him yet? \u00a0They never got his song from last year either. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Grade: Inc<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>What would I use as walk-up music?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not that I&#8217;ve\u00a0<em>ever<\/em> thought about this in my life or anything. \u00a0But i&#8217;d definitely go with something from my head-banging days in high school. \u00a0I (fortunatley or unfortunately depending on your point of view) grew up in the 80s, so we listened to glam rock, heavy metal and the like. \u00a0I&#8217;d probably go with one of these three options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;Home Sweet Home&#8221; <\/em>by Motley Crue (who is on their farewell tour this summer; tickets going fast!)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>The Final Countdown<\/em>&#8221; by Europe (simply because this is a huge running joke amongst my friends and my wife and I)<\/li>\n<li>Something harsh from Metallica. \u00a0I&#8217;d have to do some digging for a good riff that wasn&#8217;t already taken by someone more famous like\u00a0<strong>Mariano Rivera<\/strong>. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I&#8217;m tempted to do this same analysis for the pitchers &#8230; and maybe I will. \u00a0But for some reason &#8220;walk on&#8221; music for pitchers isn&#8217;t as meaning ful. \u00a0Well, except for\u00a0<strong>Tyler Clippard<\/strong>&#8216;s epic &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wvAnQqVJ3XQ\" target=\"_blank\">Peaches<\/a><\/em>&#8221; walk-up song by the Presidents of the United States a few years back. \u00a0Ok, we&#8217;ll do a part-2 of this post for the pitchers&#8230;. stay tuned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the home opener, when\u00a0Nate McLouth came to bat we were stopped in our tracks by his walk-up music: &#8220;Kyrie&#8221;\u00a0by 80&#8217;s band\u00a0Mister Mister. \u00a0My wife and I immediately thought this was a rather odd choice.
