DC States"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we <a href=\" http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8922\">last checked in with Prep Baseball<\/a>\u00a0on 5\/20\/14, Maryland was through its regionals, the private schools were mostly done, DC was still finishing the regular season, and Virginia was just starting up its District (aka &#8220;Conference&#8221;) tournaments. \u00a0Lets see where we stand now after the Memorial Day weekend and a slew of tournament results. \u00a0I&#8217;m publishing this now that the entirety of the northern Virginia 6-A and 5-A conference tournamants are complete; some of the other conferences elsewhere in the state as well as the smaller divisions are still ongoing. \u00a0We&#8217;ll update those when we get to regional tournament results. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Red text<\/span> marks locations where we&#8217;re missing results and\/or results are pending because of future games.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Virginia HS Baseball has been, for at least the past 50 years or so, divided up simply into AAA, AA and A divisions. \u00a0Hence for a long time you could state who was the &#8220;AAA State Champ&#8221; and it was basically the best team in the state (the odds of a AA school competing with a AAA school were slim). \u00a0Now, we have 6 different divisions; 6-A, 5-A, 4-A, down to 1-A. \u00a0I guess it could be worse: Florida has even more divisions (they go up to 8-A) and teams in 5-A and 6-A are often ranked higher than 8-A teams there.<\/p>\n<p>So in 2014, we&#8217;ll have a six champions crowned and may have a tough time stating with certainly whose better, especially between the 6-A and 5-A schools that used to compete against each other for decades. \u00a0But so be it; on with the tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Important Virginia tourney links: Upcoming Schedule (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball\">VHSL site<\/a>\u00a0and VHSL\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">Conference and Regional Playoff Brackets<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Regular Season ending: week of May 13-May 16th.<\/li>\n<li>Virginia District Tournaments are scheduled from May 18th to May 27th or so.<\/li>\n<li>Virginia Regionals: from May 30th to June 6th.<\/li>\n<li>Virgina State Semis and finals: June 10-13th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the Northern Virginia Conference champions, regular season and tournament. \u00a0Each team that makes a Conference quarter final qualifies for the Regional tournament.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A North Region<\/span><\/strong> (which roughly equates to the old &#8220;Northern Region&#8221;).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A\u00a0<\/strong>Conference 5\/Concorde<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(playoff bracket): <strong>Oakton<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0In the playoffs, Oakton and #2 seed <strong>Chantilly<\/strong> got byes to the semis, while <strong>Centreville<\/strong> lost to\u00a0<strong>Herndon<\/strong> 1-0 and <strong>Westfield<\/strong> handled <strong>Robinson<\/strong> 7-4 on 5\/21\/14 in big-school matchups (which if it were football would be each be Regional final quality).\u00a0 In the 5\/23\/14 semis, Chantilly beat Herndon 7-3 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/oakton-defeats-westfield-to-reach-concorde-baseball-tourney-final\/article_e39444da-e3fe-11e3-8a28-0019bb2963f4.html\">Oakton topped Westfield 4-1<\/a>.\u00a0 This sets up a #1\/#2 final on 5\/26\/14; Chantilly (the 2nd seed) swept Oakton in the regular season so Oakton has its hands full. \u00a0However, Oakton persevered, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-tommy-lopez-powers-oakton-to-conference-5-championship-against-chantilly\/2014\/05\/26\/be354a3a-e4f9-11e3-8f90-73e071f3d637_story.html\">topping Chantilly 5-1<\/a> behind Conference player of the year\u00a0<strong>Tommy Lopez<\/strong>&#8216;s pitching and hitting exploits.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><strong>6-A\u00a0<\/strong>Conference 6\/Liberty<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-6-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Madison<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0In the playoffs, #2 seed <strong>South Lakes<\/strong> was upset by <strong>McLean <\/strong>(taking South Lakes out of the regional picture)\u00a0paving the way for #3 seed <strong>Langley<\/strong> to return to the conference final (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/langley-madison-to-meet-for-liberty-conference-baseball-title\/article_34d23a8e-e0f6-11e3-97b1-0019bb2963f4.html\">beating McLean in the semis<\/a>). \u00a0There Langley meets Madison on 5\/23\/14, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/langley-madison-to-meet-for-liberty-conference-baseball-title\/article_34d23a8e-e0f6-11e3-97b1-0019bb2963f4.html\">shut-out #5 <strong>Washington &amp; Lee<\/strong> in the conference semis<\/a>\u00a0behind 6 shut-out innings from conference\u00a0Pitcher of the Year <strong>John DeFazio<\/strong> (a junior who threw a perfect game earlier this year). \u00a0 Langley expects to throw conference Player of the year\u00a0<strong>Jake McSteen<\/strong> in the final; McSteen is undefeated on the mound this year and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/05\/08\/langley-pitcher-jake-mcsteen-discusses-stellar-start-nebraska-commitment\/\">committed to Nebraska<\/a>. \u00a0Madison swept Langley in the regular season but never faced McSteen. In the Conference Final at Madison on 5\/23\/14, Madison&#8217;s <strong>Nick Brady<\/strong> (heading to Princeton) threw 5 shutout innings and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-nick-brady-pitches-madison-to-a-3-0-win-over-langley-in-the-conference-6-final\/2014\/05\/23\/82b43b3c-e10d-11e3-9743-bb9b59cde7b9_story.html\">Madison got to McSteen for a 3-0 victory<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/madison-blanks-langley-in-liberty-conference-baseball-title-game\/article_f3f43244-e33c-11e3-a105-0019bb2963f4.html\">insidenova.com story<\/a>) This is Madison&#8217;s 3rd district\/conference title in four years and they head into the Regional tournament as presumably the #1 overall seed and clear favorite.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><strong>6-A\u00a0<\/strong>Conference 7\/Potomac<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-7-bracket.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">playoff bracket<\/span><\/a>): <strong>West Springfield<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0In the playoffs <strong>Annandale<\/strong> took out perennail baseball power <strong>Lake Braddock<\/strong> in the quarters, while the seeds played true to form with <strong>South County<\/strong> facing <strong>West Potomac<\/strong> in the other conference semi. \u00a0 In the conference semis West Potomac easily handled South County while West Springfield outlasted Annandale to setup a #1 vs #2 conference final on 5\/23\/14.\u00a0 In the final, West Springfield beat West Potomac 8-5 to sweep the regular and tourney titles.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A\u00a0<\/strong>Conference 8\/Cedar Run <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-8-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Osbourn Park<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0The playoffs went according to seed, with #1 Osbourn Park facing #2 <strong>Battlefield<\/strong> for the conference title. \u00a0Battlefield <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/prince_william\/may-prep-roundup-nick-wells-shuts-out-patriot\/article_8a504e36-e0d5-11e3-814a-0019bb2963f4.html\">took out fellow PW powerhouse<strong> Patriot<\/strong> 4-0<\/a> behind a shutout from lefty senior\u00a0<strong>Nick Wells<\/strong> (committed to College of Charleston) in the #2\/#3 seed \u00a0conference semi matchup.\u00a0 In the 5\/23\/14 final, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/prince_william\/battlefield-baseball-wins-conference-tournament-title\/article_fb461a9a-e340-11e3-b3a1-0019bb2963f4.html\">Battlefield upset Osbourn Park 7-3<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6-A North Regional Qualifiers (in seed order). \u00a0Regional\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-6A-north-bracket.pdf\">Playoff Bracket is here<\/a>: the semi finalists from the four 6-A North conferences all qualify. \u00a0First round is Friday 5\/30\/14 at the higher seed&#8217;s home site.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Concorde:\u00a0Oakton, Chantilly, Westfield, Herndon<\/li>\n<li>Liberty: Madison, Langley, Washington &amp; Lee, McLean<\/li>\n<li>Potomac: West Springfield, West Potomac, South County, Annandale<\/li>\n<li>Cedar Run: Osbourn Park, Battlefield, Patriot, Osbourn (went by regular season rankings not tourney)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Its hard not to say that Madison is your Region favorite; there&#8217;s not another All-Met top 10 ranked team here and Madison&#8217;s only local loss this year was to Stone Bridge&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jacob Bukauskas. \u00a0<\/strong>But Madison has a tough road ahead: they\u00a0face Herndon on 5\/3014, then (likely) Patriot. \u00a0Meanwhile Oakton faces a tough 2nd round potential matchup with Battlefield; are teams from the Cedar Run conference \u00a0strong or weak? \u00a0Myquick Regional semis predictions would be Osbourn Park, West Springfield, Battlefield and Madison.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A South Region<\/strong><\/span>: which is mostly big-time schools in Richmond and the Virginia Beach area. \u00a0But there are just enough schools in Woodbridge proper to form a 6-A conference closer to DC with teams that are typically considered for All-Met rankings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A Conference 4<\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-4-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>):\u00a0<strong>Hylton<\/strong>\u00a0(Woodbridge) regular season champ with a playoff bye. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0In the qua<\/span>rters Forest Park (Woodbridge) beat Stafford <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/prince_william\/prep-conference-tournament-schedule-results\/article_cadc3e0a-df69-11e3-be02-001a4bcf887a.html\">4-1<\/a>, Gar-Field (Woodbridge) was pounded by #2 Colonial Forge (Stafford) 8-0, and Woodbridge lost to #3 Riverbend (Fredericksburg) 4-2. \u00a0 In the 5\/30\/14 semis, Hylton beat Forest Park <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/prince_william\/prep-conference-tournament-schedule-results\/article_cadc3e0a-df69-11e3-be02-001a4bcf887a.html\">3-0<\/a> and Riverbend <a href=\"http:\/\/news.fredericksburg.com\/hsfb\/2014\/05\/31\/high-school-baseball-chargers-soriano-delivers-in-fourth-ot\/\">upset<\/a> Colonial Forge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/prince_william\/prep-conference-tournament-schedule-results\/article_cadc3e0a-df69-11e3-be02-001a4bcf887a.html\">5-1<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 5\/31\/14 final, Hylton scored in the bottom of the 7th to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.fredericksburg.com\/hsfb\/2014\/05\/31\/high-school-roundup-dogs-deny-bears-bid-for-c-4-crown\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">take the crown 2-1<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Other 6-A South conferences are slow to get started; the brackets are available (spotty) online at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">above VHSL link<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unlike the north regional, just the conference champs and semi-finalists qualified for<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A North Region<\/strong><\/span> (which also roughly equates to schools from the old Northern Region, with the exception of Conference 16 &#8230; which includes schools all the way to South Boston).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 13\/Capitol<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-13-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Marshall<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0In the playoffs, the seeds held mostly to form in the quarters, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/statesmen-top-warriors-in-first-round-conference-tourney-game\/article_c0651aac-e016-11e3-ad1a-001a4bcf887a.html\">Marshall beating <strong>Wakefield<\/strong><\/a>, #2 seed <strong>Edison<\/strong> pounding <strong>Falls Church<\/strong>, #3 <strong>Lee<\/strong> taking out <strong>Jefferson<\/strong> and #5 <strong>Stuart<\/strong> squeaking by <strong>Mount Vernon<\/strong>. \u00a0In the semis on 5\/21\/14 the #1 and #2 seeds advanced to the final, with Edison beating Lee and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/marshall-baseball-and-softball-teams-advance-to-title-games\/article_9bc07a86-e1a4-11e3-a3c5-0019bb2963f4.html\">Marshall handling Stuart<\/a>. \u00a0 5\/23\/14 final: Marshall beat Edison 4-2 for their first district\/conference championship in nearly 15 years.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 14 <\/strong><\/span>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-14-bracket1.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Stone Bridge<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0<strong>Broad Run<\/strong> and <strong>Tuscarora<\/strong> won their quarters, making the semis Stone Bridge vs Broad Run in a battle of Ashburn high schools, and <strong>Freedom (South Riding)<\/strong> versus Tuscarora (Leesburg). \u00a0\u00a0 In the Semis 5\/23\/14 the seeds held true, with #1 Stone Bridge getting past Broad Run 3-0 and #2 Freedom taking out Tuscarora 5-0. \u00a0In the 5\/27\/14 final Stone Bridge squeaked by Freedom-SR 6-5.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 15 <\/strong><\/span>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-15-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Potomac (VA)<\/strong> regular season champ. \u00a0 In the semis, Potomac (Dumfries) pounded\u00a0<strong>Mountain View<\/strong> (Centreville) \u00a0while <strong>North Stafford\u00a0<\/strong>handled <strong>Brooke Point<\/strong> in an all-Stafford semi. \u00a0Final on 5\/27\/14: Potomac blanked North Stafford 8-0 and looks like a force in the regional tournament.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 16<\/strong><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-16-bracket.pdf\">playoff bracket<\/a>): Comprised of four schools far away from the DC area.\u00a0 <strong>Halifax<\/strong> (South Boston) was the regular season champion, followed by <strong>Patrick Henry<\/strong> (Roanoke), <strong>Albemarle<\/strong> (Charlottesville), and <strong>Orange<\/strong> (north of Charlottesville, not quite to Culpeper).\u00a0 Wow that&#8217;s a lot of driving for those schools to play district games.\u00a0 In the 5\/23\/14 Halifax crushed Orange and Patrick Henry beat Albem<span style=\"color: #000000;\">arle, setting up a #1\/#2 seed final in this<\/span> small conference. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wtvr.com\/2014\/05\/26\/high-school-playoff-scoreboard\/\">Patrick Henry upset Halifax 4-2<\/a> to take the conference final on memorial day, but the seedings went by regular season standings for the regional tournament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5-A NorthRegional Qualifiers (in seed order): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-5A-north-bracket.pdf\">Regional playoff bracket is here<\/a>. \u00a0Unlike in 6-A, only the top 3 seeds advanced in some of these conferences. \u00a0Maybe its based on the size of the conference.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 13\/Capitol: Marshall, Edison, Stuart ,\u00a0Lee<\/li>\n<li>Conference 14: Stone Bridge, Freedom &#8211; South Riding, Tuscarora<\/li>\n<li>Conference 15: Potomac, North Stafford, Brooke Point<\/li>\n<li>Conference 16: Halifax, Patrick Henry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;d say that your regional favorite was Stone Bridge on the back of Bukauskas, but Potomac has a strong lineup (8 college committed players) and the Southern Virginian schools are complete unknowns. \u00a0Lets hope Potomac and Stone Bridge are on opposite sides of the bracket. \u00a0The regional bracket was published 5\/29\/14 and it looks like the semis will play out as Marshall-Stone Bridge and Potomac-Halifax. \u00a0I&#8217;m predicting a Stone Bridge-Potomac final with Potomac taking it (depending on when Bukauskas pitches&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>5-A South Regional: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-5A-south-bracket.pdf\">Playoff bracket here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Smaller Virginia Classifications<\/strong><\/span>: for years Northern Virginia didn&#8217;t have anything smaller than 6-A and 5-A schools (with apologies to George Mason HS in Falls Church); now the proliferation of newer high schools in Loudoun County has led to a slew of 4-A and 3-A schools. \u00a0They have to do some serious commuting though; most of their conference foes are significant distances west and south. \u00a0None of these schools are considered baseball powers in the same vein as the 5-A and 6-A schools above.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A North<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A conference 21<\/strong><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-conference-21-bracket-pdf.PDF\">playoff bracket<\/a>): <strong>Millbrook<\/strong> was the regular season champ, going 12-0 in conference. \u00a0In the qtrs on 5\/23\/14 <strong>Heritage<\/strong> (Leesburg) beat <strong>Park View<\/strong> (Sterling) 3-0,\u00a0<strong>Dominion<\/strong> (Sterling), lost to\u00a0<strong>Millbrook<\/strong> (Winchester) 9-0, <strong>Loudoun County<\/strong> (Leesburg) beat\u00a0<strong>James Wood<\/strong> (Winchester) 5-4, and \u00a0<strong>Sherando<\/strong>\u00a0(Stephens City, outside Winchester)\u00a0blanked\u00a0<strong>Woodgrove<\/strong> (Purceville, outside Leesburg) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/05\/prep-scores-may-23-2.php\">6-0<\/a>.
