{"id":9023,"date":"2014-06-08T09:59:06","date_gmt":"2014-06-08T13:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9023"},"modified":"2014-06-08T09:59:06","modified_gmt":"2014-06-08T13:59:06","slug":"prep-baseball-update-virginia-regionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9023","title":{"rendered":"Prep Baseball Update: Virginia Regionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the next big update on the state of High School baseball in the area. \u00a0We previously talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8922\">Maryland Regionals and Virginia regular season play wrapping up<\/a>, then we posted after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9016\">Maryland states and Virginia conference play<\/a> had mostly finished up. \u00a0In these posts we also covered some private school tournaments and the DC tourneys as much as we could.<\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re through the Virginia regional tournaments and its time to check in.\u00a0 The state semi-finals are set in all six divisions.\u00a0 Lets recap the regionals.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Virginia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been little national recognition of any of Northern Virginia&#8217;s powerhouses (Madison, Stone Bridge, Hylton, Osbourn Park or Battlefield) in any of the national high school rankings this year, but schools in Richmond and Norfolk have taken turns cycling in and out of the various top 25\/top 50 lists.<\/p>\n<p>At some point or another, Cosby HS (Midlothian, in the western Richmond suburbs), Woodside (Newport News), Douglas Freeman (Richmond), Western Branch (Chesapeake), Hickory (Chesapeake) and Great Bridge (Chesapeake) have all gotten national attention from the various national ranking lists in 2014. \u00a0It will be interesting to see how the Northern Virginia powers match up with these southern schools in the state tournament. \u00a0But, thanks to the re-classifications of schools we aren&#8217;t going to get the big-time match-ups we wanted to see in <span style=\"color: #000000;\">states. \u00a0Cosby, Western Branch, and Woodside are 6-A schools, while Freeman, Great Bridge, and Hickory are 5-A schools. \u00a0Last year&#8217;s AAA state champ Hanover is a 4-A school now and will face pretty light competition while returning its ace <strong>Derek Casey<\/strong>\u00a0(UVA commit) from last year&#8217;s state champ. All these aformentioned teams have\u00a0qualified for the regional tournaments, so we may get some juicy match-ups between northern Virginia powerhouses and the nationally-recognized southern Virginia schools in the State playoffs. \u00a0Only the regional champ and finalist qualify to the state final four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With apologies to the smaller schools, we&#8217;re going to mostly focus on the 6-A and 5-A playoffs here.\u00a0 All <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">conference, regional and state brackets<\/a> here at VHSL&#8217;s site.\u00a0 Records listed for teams are as they were heading INTO the game being described, not afterwards.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A North Regionals<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-6A-north-bracket.pdf\">Playoff Bracket is here<\/a>. \u00a0Here were your qualifiers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Concorde:\u00a0Oakton (regular season and tourney champ), Chantilly, Westfield, Herndon<\/li>\n<li>Liberty: Madison (regular season and tourney champ), Langley, Washington &amp; Lee, McLean<\/li>\n<li>Potomac: West Springfield (regular season and tourney champ), West Potomac, South County, Annandale<\/li>\n<li>Cedar Run: Osbourn Park (regular season champ), Battlefield (tourney champ), Patriot, Osbourn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regional schedule is: first round 5\/30\/14, quarters 6\/2\/14, semis 6\/4\/14 and final 6\/6\/14, each game at the higher seed&#8217;s home field.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 6-A North\u00a0Regional first round on 5\/30\/14, two Conference champions were upset and the power of the Cedar Run teams was put into question.\u00a0 Annandale upset Osbourn Park and McLean upset Oakton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/mclean-senior-throws-one-hitter-in-region-first-round-upset\/article_64543ca0-e86f-11e3-8ae6-001a4bcf887a.html\">behind a 1-hitter<\/a> from Va Tech commit\u00a0<strong>Joey Su<\/strong><\/span><strong>llivan.<\/strong>\u00a0 Meanwhile Patriot was blasted by West Potomac 8-2.\u00a0 Cedar Run&#8217;s lone winner was Battlefield, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/06\/06\/blue-jays-select-battlefield-southpaw-nick-wells-in-third-round\/\">3rd round pick<\/a> <strong>Nick Wells<\/strong> (College of Charleston commit, featured here in Allmetsports as a potential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/2014-mlb-draft-scouts-size-up-6-foot-5-battlefield-left-hander-nick-wells\/2014\/06\/04\/d562af1e-eb3d-11e3-93d2-edd4be1f5d9e_story.html\">3rd-4th rounder<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/may-prep-roundup-nick-wells-shuts-out-south-county\/article_84dfa4bc-e8b2-11e3-9a96-001a4bcf887a.html\">threw a 4-hit shutout<\/a> to beat South County.\u00a0 The other two #1 seeds survived (Madison getting by Herndon 6-3 and West Springfield pounding Osbourn 15-3). \u00a0 The rest of the regional quarter finalists slate was filled by Langley a<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nd Chantilly (a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/arlington\/generals-blanked-in-opening-round-of-region-baseball-tournament\/article_6be0e724-e8b6-11e3-ac91-0019bb2963f4.html\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10-0 winner<\/span><\/a> over hapless Washington &amp; Lee).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the 6-A North Regiona<span style=\"color: #000000;\">l Quarter finals on 6\/2\/14, Chantilly blanked Annandale 4-0, West Springfield handled Langley 5-2 and Madison squeaked by West Potomac 7-6 in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/06\/03\/baseball-madison-wins-12-inning-slugfest-over-west-potomac\/?tid=up_next\">12-inning thriller<\/a>. \u00a0However it was the last quarterfinal that gave the biggest surprise: little known McLean and its .500 record got into the regional tournament by virtue of a big upset in the conference tournament, and continued its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/mclean-knocks-off-another-higher-seed-in-region-baseball-tourney\/article_e9352e98-eb26-11e3-acaf-0019bb2963f4.html\">upsetting ways<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-mclean-tops-battlefield-to-extend-playoff-surge-into-va-6a-north-region-semis\/2014\/06\/02\/9080666c-e69b-11e3-8f90-73e071f3d637_story.html\">beating a well-regarded Battlefield team 7-5<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the <span style=\"color: #000000;\">6-A north\u00a0regional semis,<\/span> Chantilly (15-7) upset West Springfield (15-5) 4-1 behind a big night from their ace <strong>Easton Recto<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile, conference foes McLean (14-10) and Madison (21-2) squared off for the 3rd time this season, and McLean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/baseball\/mclean-continues-hot-play-to-reach-region-championship-game\/article_d10da9bc-ecbb-11e3-a3e0-0019bb2963f4.html\">scored the unlikely upset<\/a> 5-1 behind senior Ace and Va Tech bound <strong>Joey Sullivan<\/strong>&#8216;s masterful pitching. \u00a0Madison had swept the season series against McLean by a combined score of 19-4, but McLean came up big once again. \u00a0I guess it is safe to say that Madison&#8217;s record was overstating its quality.<\/p>\n<p>6-A <span style=\"color: #000000;\">North regional final<\/span>: Chantilly (16-7) destroyed McLean (15-10) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-chantilly-blasts-mclean-in-first-inning-rolls-to-virginia-6a-north-region-title\/2014\/06\/06\/54e1f710-ea83-11e3-b98c-72cef4a00499_story.html\">score of 12-0<\/a> in a pretty unlikely final.\u00a0\u00a0 Chantilly batted around in the first inning and never looked back.\u00a0 Neither team had *ever* won a regional baseball crown, and McLean has *never* made a state baseball tournament prior to this year. Quite a turnaround from a team that (by conference seed) shouldn&#8217;t have even been in the regionals.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A South Regional<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-6A-south-bracket.pdf\">Playoff Bracket is here<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Unlike the 6-A north, just the conference finalists qualified.\u00a0 Here were your qualifiers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 1\/Coastal: Grandby (regular season champ), First Colonial (tourney champ)<\/li>\n<li>Conference 2\/Monitor-Merrimac:\u00a0Western Branch (regular season and <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/05\/8run-innings-help-western-branch-forget-poor-start\">tourney champs<\/a>), Woodside<\/li>\n<li>Conference 3: Cosby (regular season champ), James River<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Conference 4: Hylton (regular season and tourney champ), Riverbend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regional schedule is: Western Branch vs First Colonial, Grandby-Woodside, Cosby-Riverbend and Hylton-James River. \u00a0In the 6\/2\/14 quarter finals, all four conference champions advanced (a slight surprise to this witness, who thought that Woodside was a bit better, and who thought that Hylton may have had a hard time with their southern virginia opponents. \u00a0Western Branch beat First Colonial <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-western-branch-advances-region-semis\">6-1<\/a>, Grandby beat Woodside 2-1, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/austin-magestro-shuts-out-james-river\/article_fd151066-eb14-11e3-8a45-001a4bcf887a.html\">Hylton beat James River 9-0<\/a>\u00a0behind a shutout from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/all-met\/recruit-watch\/boys\/Baseball\/index.html\">Sewanee-bound<\/a> <strong>Austin Magestro<\/strong>,\u00a0and Cosby beat Riverbend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/scoreboard\/a-south-baseball-cosby-riverbend\/article_fea80408-5a42-55a5-ae16-0840f58a63e5.html\">7-2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 6-A south regional semis<\/span>, Western Branch (22-2) blanked Grandby (18-4 record) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-western-branch-reaches-state-tournament\">score of 6-0<\/a>, while the undefeated Cosby (22-0) blitzed Woodbridge powerhouse Hylton (19-2) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/ciucci-cosby-pile-up-hits-runs-to-advance-to-baseball\/article_17aaab73-f567-51bb-8d70-64fb56f87c05.html\">score of 11-6<\/a>. \u00a0We expected a Cosby-Western Branch matchup and we got it.<\/p>\n<p>6-A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">South regional final<\/span>: Western Branch (23-2) blitzed Cosby (23-0) <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-western-branch-wins-region-title\">by the score of 8-1<\/a> in a matchup of nationally recognized power houses. \u00a0I fully expect to see this rematch in the state final in a week&#8217;s time, given the weakness of the 6-A North teams.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A North Regional:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-5A-north-bracket.pdf\">Regional playoff bracket is here<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here were your qualifiers (not all conference contributed equal numbers of teams)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 13\/Capitol: Marshall (regular season and tourney champ), Edison,\u00a0Stuart ,\u00a0Lee<\/li>\n<li>Conference 14: Stone Bridge (regular season and tourney champ), Freedom &#8211; South Riding, Tuscarora<\/li>\n<li>Conference 15: Potomac (regular season and tourney champ), North Stafford, Brooke Point<\/li>\n<li>Conference 16: Halifax (regular season champ), Patrick Henry &#8211; Ashland (tournament champ)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regional schedule is: first round\/play-in 5\/30\/14, quarters 6\/2\/14, semis 6\/4\/14 and final 6\/6\/14, each game at the higher seed&#8217;s home field.<\/p>\n<p>In the 5-A North Regio<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nal first\/play-in round on 5\/30\/14, Patrick Henry &#8211; Ashland, North Stafford, Freedom-South Riding and Edison all earned the right to play conference champions in the regional quarter finals.\u00a0 North Stafford destroyed Stuart 10-0 and faces regional favorite Stone Bridge in what could be an interesting quarter final.\u00a0 Marshall faces the unknown Patrick Henry, while Potomac likely will not be challenged by Freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 5-A North Regional Quarter finals on 6\/2\/14, more surprising results. \u00a0Conference chaps Marshall, Stone Bridge and Halifax each advanced to the regional semis, but little known Freedom-South Riding pulled a monumental upset over a Potomac team that I thought could challenge for the regional title.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just after the quarters, Stone Bridge got a huge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-stone-bridge-ace-jb-bukauskas-will-not-pitch-for-the-rest-of-the-season\/2014\/06\/03\/9652ee20-eb82-11e3-93d2-edd4be1f5d9e_story.html\">piece of bad news<\/a> when ace\u00a0<strong>Jacob Bukauskas<\/strong>\u00a0was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/loudoun\/stone_bridge\/jb-bukauksas-shut-down-for-rest-of-season\/article_d0671916-eb18-11e3-9bfb-001a4bcf887a.html\">shutdown due to elbow tendinitis<\/a>. \u00a0Too bad for people who were hoping for one more shot to see him throw live.<\/p>\n<p>In the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5-A North Semis<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, Stone Bridge (21-1) outslugged Marshall (14-6) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-stone-bridge-jumps-on-marshall-early-to-reach-virginia-5a-north-region-final\/2014\/06\/04\/e6fff1f6-e6a0-11e3-8f90-73e071f3d637_story.html\">score of 12-5<\/a>, while Freedom-South Riding (12-12) upset conference 16 champion Halifax County (Unk record) by the score of 7-2.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>5-A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">North regional final<\/span>: Stone Bridge (22-1) eased by conference foe Freedom-South Riding (13-12) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-chantilly-blasts-mclean-in-first-inning-rolls-to-virginia-6a-north-region-title\/2014\/06\/06\/54e1f710-ea83-11e3-b98c-72cef4a00499_story.html\">by the score of 2-1<\/a>\u00a0 in a Conference 14 rematch. \u00a0Stone Bridge had already beaten Freedom three times this season, each time the score got closer, so a 2-1 nail-biter wasn&#8217;t unexpected.\u00a0 Stone Bridge showed how quality they are even without their Ace.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A South Regional:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-5A-south-bracket.pdf\">Playoff Bracket is here<\/a>. \u00a0Here were your qualifiers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conference 9\/Atlantic: Maury (regular season champ), Kellam (<a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/05\/thursdays-roundup-squeeze-sparks-first-colonial\">tourney champ<\/a>) (Norfold\/Va Beach)<\/li>\n<li>Conference 10: \u00a0Great Bridge (regular season and tourney champ), Hickory (both teams from Chesapeake)<\/li>\n<li>Conference 11: Douglas Freeman (regular season champ and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/scoreboard\/baseball-douglas-freeman-mills-godwin\/article_1cca545b-0b7c-5dd2-990a-f432e495cff8.html\">tourney champ<\/a>), Mills Goodwin (both teams in Richmond)<\/li>\n<li>Conference 12: Matoaca (regular season champ and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/baseball-matoaca-prince-george\/article_22a0f974-8c39-5588-b8e9-ce4f6c6bc094.html\">tourney champ<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prince George (Teams from Chesterfield and Petersburg, both in South Richmond)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>The 5-A south regional faces a t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ough schedule; 3 games in 4 days starting on 6\/3\/14. \u00a0In the quarters, both Richmond teams advanced, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/baseball-freeman-prince-george-godwin-matoaca\/article_b25c1568-ebed-11e3-90c4-001a4bcf6878.html\">Freeman pounding Prince George<\/a> 12-4 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/baseball-freeman-prince-george-godwin-matoaca\/article_b25c1568-ebed-11e3-90c4-001a4bcf6878.html\">Goodwin giving Matoaca<\/a> just their second loss on the year in a 4-1 win. \u00a0 Meanwhile the Tidewater quarters featured some interesting results, with <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-hickory-makes-it-look-easy-quarterfinal\">Hickory blasting Maury<\/a> 16-1 and <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/region-roundup-kellam-ousts-great-bridge-quarters\">Kellam upsetting Great Bridge<\/a> 4-2. \u00a0Both Hickory and Kellam were the 2nd seeds out of their conference, and just one conference champion advanced out of the 5-A south quarters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the\u00a05-A South Semis,<\/span> Mills Godwin (18-5) \u00a0got another crack at Douglas Freeman (23-1) in a rematch of the Conference 11 final, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/scoreboard\/a-south-baseball-douglas-freeman-mills-godwin\/article_0b4c04f8-12f0-503c-917d-d88e2e5ca030.html\">was crushed 9-1<\/a>.\u00a0 In the other regional semi, Hickory (16-6) outlasted Kellam (18-5) in a <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/region-roundup-hickory-slips-past-kellam-slugfest\">wild 11-10 game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5-A\u00a0South regional final: D<\/span>ouglas Freeman (24-1) beat Hickory (17-6) by the <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/region-baseball-hickory-suffers-humbling-defeat\">score of 6-4<\/a> with a 6-run sixth inning comeback.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Virginia Smaller Classifications:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Conference and Regional brackets available from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">VHSL&#8217;s site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4-A: One interesting note about the 4-A tournament is the fact that 2013 AAA state champion Hanover (Mechanicsville\/Richmond) is now a 4-A school and is a clear 4-A state favorite right now. \u00a0They enter regionals with a 17-2 record. \u00a0Most of the 4-A regional-qualified schools closer to DC are based out of Winchester (Sherando, Millbrook) or Culpeper\/Fredericksburg (Eastern View, Chancellor). \u00a0In the 4-A North semis, Conference 21 foes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/06\/entsminger-smallwood-deliver-in-warriors-dramatic.php\">Sherando<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/sports\/millbrook-ends-amherst-s-season-in-shocking-fashion\/article_d76a640e-ec60-11e3-ad9d-0017a43b2370.html\">Millbrook<\/a> both advanced to force a 5th rematch on the year (Millbrook has won all four meetings). \u00a0In the 4-A South semis, Hanover and Grafton advanced. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0In the 4-A North Regional finals,<\/span> Milbrook beat Sherando for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/06\/warriors-fall-again-to-pioneers-in-region-final.php\">fifth time this season 6-5<\/a>, while in the 4-A south regional finals defending state champ Hanover <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/baseball-hanover-grafton\/article_0e4185d9-bdb9-5615-8000-7b8f3ac7982a.html\">handled Grafton 2-0<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>3-A: As with ther 4-A schools, the 3-A regional qualifiers close to DC area generally from the Culpeper area (Kettle Run, Culpeper, William Monroe) or points further remote, but Loudoun Valley HS (in Purceville) won the 3-A east and looks to be a state favorite.<\/li>\n<li>2-A: No DC-local schools (George Mason the only one) qualified for regionals.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/06\/rams-slug-their-way-past-mountaineers-win-regional.php\">Strasburg won the 2-A east regional<\/a> and enters the state tournament with a 23-1 record.<\/li>\n<li>1-A: No DC-local schools are in the smallest 1-A classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Recent Virginia AAA HS champs<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>2013: Hanover d Great Bridge. Hanover&#8217;s super-junior Derek Casey (committed to UVA) outlasts Great Bridge and their 1st round talent <strong>Connor Jones<\/strong> (now attending UVA after spurning a likely late 1st round draft position). \u00a0Lake Braddock and Oakton beaten in the semis.<\/p>\n<p>2012: Lake Braddock d Kellam 4-0.
