{"id":9243,"date":"2014-06-10T07:47:06","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T11:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9243"},"modified":"2014-06-10T07:47:06","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T11:47:06","slug":"cws-super-regionals-recap-and-cws-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9243","title":{"rendered":"CWS Super-Regionals recap and CWS field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9099\">initial field of 64<\/a>, through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9189\">regional play<\/a>, and now we&#8217;re through the super regionals. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a review of the action from the 6\/6\/14 weekend and a look at our CWS field of eight for 2014.<\/p>\n<p>From a draft perspective, the super-regionals feature a number of high profile guys, as noted by MLB.com&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joey Nowalk<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/news\/article\/mlb\/super-regionals-to-feature-handful-of-draft-prospects?ymd=20140603&amp;content_id=77990798&amp;vkey=news_mlb\">here<\/a>. \u00a0<strong>Tyler Beede, Max Pentecost, Brandon Finnegan<\/strong>, UVA&#8217;s trio of 1st-2nd rounders (<strong>Derek Fisher<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mike Papi<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Nick Howard<\/strong>) and Maryland&#8217;s ace\/2nd rounder <strong>Jake Stinnett<\/strong> are all names to watch. \u00a0Lots of good pitching in this super-regional.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.d1baseball.com\/2014\/daily\/0606.htm\">super-regionals went down<\/a>: we&#8217;ll look at these regionals in the original order of the top 8 national seeds.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Blue<\/strong> <\/span>identifies the super-regional winners.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UC Irvine at #16 Oklahoma State: In Stillwater <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>UC Irvine<\/strong> <\/span>once again proved doubters wrong, sweeping two games quickly on the road to qualify for Omaha.<\/li>\n<li>College of Charleston at Texas Tech: Texas Tech squeaked by Charleston <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cofcsports.com\/\/ViewContent.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=14800&amp;CONTENT_ID=949747\">1-0<\/a> in the opener despite a stellar performance from local kid <strong>Taylor Clarke<\/strong> (8ip, 5 hits, 1 run).\u00a0 Texas Tech won the 2nd game of the regional by the same score; Charleston&#8217;s pitching staff gave up 2 runs in 18 innings and lost both games.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Texas Tech<\/strong> <\/span>to Omaha.<\/li>\n<li>#3 Virginia hosting Maryland: Maryland (behind 2nd round pick Stinnett) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/colleges\/college-baseball-maryland-holds-off-virginia-5-4-in-opener-of-ncaa-super-regional\/2014\/06\/07\/c26a5e2c-ee8d-11e3-b84b-3393a45b80f1_story.html\">shocked UVA in the opener 5-4<\/a>, putting 5 runs on Virginia&#8217;s ace <strong>Nathan Kirby<\/strong> and knocking him out in the 5th.\u00a0 Does Maryland have the pitching though to hold off the consensus CWS favorites?\u00a0 Not in the 2nd game; Uva roared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/colleges\/college-baseball-virginia-beats-maryland-7-3-to-even-ncaa-super-regional-series\/2014\/06\/08\/f56aa70e-ef56-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html\">back to win 7-3<\/a> and force the tiebreaking game.\u00a0 There <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>UVA<\/strong> <\/span>continued to batter the Maryland pitching staff and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/colleges\/virginia-routs-maryland-in-game-3-of-ncaa-super-regional-to-reach-college-world-series\/2014\/06\/09\/285ab9a2-f03c-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html\">advanced to Omaha 11-2<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stanford at #13 Vanderbilt: Vanderbilt destroyed Stanford in the opener (they were up 10-0 by the end of the 3rd) but Stanford took game 2 to force a super-regional tie-breaker.\u00a0 In game 3 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Vanderbilt<\/strong> <\/span>jumped all over Stanford&#8217;s starter en route to 5 first inning runs and an eventual easy win.<\/li>\n<li>Kennessaw State at #12 Louisville: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Louisville<\/strong><\/span> outmatched the upstart Kennessaw State team and won two straight to return to Omaha.<\/li>\n<li>#6 Louisiana-Lafayette hosting #11 Ole Miss: In game one Louisiana-Lafayette&#8217;s offense put 9 runs up in the first 3 innings and held on for a 9-5 win.\u00a0 But Ole Miss fought back to win game 2 and force the tiebreaker.\u00a0 In the deciding game, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> <\/span>broke open a close, rainy game with 4 in the ninth to advance 10-4.<\/li>\n<li>#7 TCU hosting Pepperdine: TCU got 6 decent innings out of its ace (and first round pick) Finnegan and held on for a 3-2 opening win.\u00a0 Pepperdine forced the tiebreaker with its own 3-2 win in game 2.\u00a0 In the decider, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>TCU<\/strong> <\/span>won a back-and-forth affair by taking the lead with 2 runs in the top of the 9th and survived a rally to advance.<\/li>\n<li>Texas hosting Houston: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Texas<\/strong><\/span> took both games from Houston 4-2 and then 4-0 to qualify for Omaha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CWS Field: UC Irvine, Vanderbilt, Louisville, and Texas on one side, Texas Tech,Virginia, Ole Miss and TCU on the other.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting field;
