{"id":9271,"date":"2014-06-16T11:01:01","date_gmt":"2014-06-16T15:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9271"},"modified":"2014-06-16T11:01:01","modified_gmt":"2014-06-16T15:01:01","slug":"final-2014-prep-baseball-update-virginia-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9271","title":{"rendered":"Final 2014 Prep Baseball Update: Virginia States"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prep tournament Baseball updates so far in 2014:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8922\">Maryland Regionals and Virginia regular season play wrapping up<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9016\">Maryland State Finals and Virginia conference play<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9023\">Virginia Regionals review<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re to the last of the local state tournaments; the Virginia State finals, which took place this past weekend at various locations around the state.\u00a0 The finalists in all Virginia regionals qualified for the &#8220;final four&#8221; in each classification. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what we&#8217;re looking at by Virginia classification (all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">VHSL conference and regional playoff brackets here<\/a>, and the State playoffs ( <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/baseball\">final four brackets<\/a> are here).<\/p>\n<p>Before getting to the tournament results, it is of note that the Washington Post released its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/2014\/spring-all-met\/baseball\/index.html\">All-Met teams<\/a> for the year, and most of the first and second team players have been mentioned in this blog here and there for their leadership on championship teams across the local region.\u00a0 All Met player of the year should be no surprise: <strong>Jacob Bukauskus<\/strong>, who was also one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/06\/12\/louisville-slugger-names-trio-of-area-athletes-to-all-american-team\/\">three local players<\/a> named to the <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballnews.com\/2014-high-school-all-americans\/\">Louisville Slugger All-American <\/a>teams.\u00a0 Bukauskas, <strong>Cody Morris<\/strong> of the Maryland 3-A champion Reservoir and WCAC\/DCSAA champion St. John&#8217;s <strong>A.J. Lee<\/strong> were named to the first and\/or second all-american teams.\u00a0 Other local accolades announced: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/a-north-region-baseball-team\/article_5b3b97f0-f173-11e3-81ad-0019bb2963f4.html\">5-A North All-Region team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Virginia State Tournament Finals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In each state semi-final each regional winner plays the runner-up from the other regional.\u00a0 These games are set for Friday June 13th with the state championships the following day (except when rain pushed games to sunday 6\/15).\u00a0 The 6-A and 5-A tournaments are being played in Northern Virginia (at Lake Braddock and Robinson).\u00a0 4-A and 3-A is being played at Liberty University.\u00a0\u00a0 And 2-A\/1-A is being played in Salem and at Radford University.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A State Finals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6-A North: Winner Chantilly (17-7), runner-up McLean (15-11)<\/li>\n<li>6-A South: Winner Western Branch (24-2), runner-up Cosby (23-1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-6A-bracket3.pdf\">6-A State Bracket<\/a>.\u00a0 My prediction was a 6-A South regional final rematch between Virginia&#8217;s two nationally recognized powers with Cosby getting revenge for their 6-A south regional loss.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6-A State Finals Results<\/span>:\u00a0 In the first 6-A semi, McLean pushed nationally ranked Western Branch but ended up <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-western-branch-reaches-state-final\">losing 5-4<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 In the second 6-A semi, Chantilly pulled off a stunner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/virginia-6a-baseball-chantilly-continues-its-run-reaches-state-championship-game\/2014\/06\/14\/61b94794-f439-11e3-914c-1fbd0614e2d4_story.html\">and beat Cosby 3-2<\/a>, beating 32nd round pick and UNC commit <strong>Hunter Williams<\/strong> behind a complete game from <strong>Eason Recto<\/strong> (committed to Cornell).\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-western-branch-wins-group-6a-state-title\">6\/15 final<\/a>, Chantilly once again punched above their weight and scared a tougher team, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-chantillys-record-setting-run-ends-in-virginia-6a-title-game-loss-to-western-branch\/2014\/06\/15\/624a7af0-f170-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html\">in the end lost 6-4<\/a> to Western Branch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A State champ<\/strong><\/span>: Western Branch (Chesapeake) with a 26-2 record on the season.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A State Finals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5-A North: Winner Stone Bridge (23-1), runner-up Freedom-South Riding (13-13)<\/li>\n<li>5-A South: Winner Douglas Freeman (25-1), runner-up Hickory (17-7)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-5A-bracket1.pdf\">5-A State Bracket<\/a>. My 5-A prediction was seeing Freeman riding roughshod over the Bukauskas-less Stone Bridge team in the final.<\/p>\n<p>5-A State Finals Results: In one semi, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/virginia-5a-baseball-stone-bridge-freedom-south-riding-fall-in-the-state-semifinals\/2014\/06\/14\/0dc5162e-f009-11e3-914c-1fbd0614e2d4_story.html\">Freeman pounded the over-matched Freedom team 7-0<\/a> while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/virginia-5a-baseball-stone-bridge-freedom-south-riding-fall-in-the-state-semifinals\/2014\/06\/14\/0dc5162e-f009-11e3-914c-1fbd0614e2d4_story.html\">Hickory blitzed Stone Bridge 9-1<\/a> behind junior <strong>Connor Eason<\/strong>&#8216;s gem (early UVA commit), setting up an all 5-A south final. \u00a0In the 6\/15\/14 5-A final, Hickory got revenge against Freeman and took their first state title by <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2014\/06\/baseball-hickory-wins-group-5a-state-championship\">outlasting Freeman 6-4 in 10 innings<\/a>. \u00a0Hickory, fyi, is the alma mater of Mets 3rd baseman\u00a0<strong>David Wright<\/strong> and veteran utilityman\u00a0<strong>Scott Sizemore<\/strong>.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A State champ<\/strong><\/span>: Hickory (Chesapeake) with an 19-7 record.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A State Finals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4-A North: Winner Millbrook (23-1), runner-up Sherando (16-7)<\/li>\n<li>4-A South: Winner Hanover (19-2), runner-up Grafton (19-6)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-4A-bracket2.pdf\">4-A State Bracket<\/a>: My 4-A Prediction: Hanover blitzes their way to a repeat state title over Winchester&#8217;s Millbrook squad and leaves people wondering if they could have won the larger classifications as well.\u00a0 4-A Results: Sure enough, the two regional champions both advanced easily to the 4-A final, with Millbrook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winchesterstar.com\/article\/millbrook_rolls_over_grafton_10_3_to_reach_4a_state_baseball_title_game\">defeating Grafton 10-3<\/a> and Hanover <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/sports\/high-school\/baseball\/baseball-hanover-sherando\/article_6e807da7-7da1-51a2-8712-c6b1a243be7c.html\">defeating Sherando 6-2<\/a>.\u00a0 In the 6\/14 final, Hanover&#8217;s <strong>Derek Casey<\/strong> made quick work of Millbrook, capping off an undefeated prep career (27-0) with Hanover winning its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/news\/latest-news\/hanover-makes-it-two-state-baseball-titles-in-a-row\/article_85f434e0-f400-11e3-8c97-001a4bcf6878.html\">second consecutive state title 7-1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4-A State champ<\/strong><\/span>: Hanover (Mechanicsville\/Richmond), 21-2 on the season<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Virginia Smaller Classifications<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-3A-bracket2.pdf\">3-A<\/a>: Regional Champs LoudounValley, Tunstall and runner-ups Poquoson, William Byrd.\u00a0 Uneducated prediction: Loudoun Valley wins the title.\u00a0 In the semis, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/virginia-3a-baseball-will-reed-leads-loudoun-valley-to-its-first-state-title-game-since-1972\/2014\/06\/13\/19322f84-f008-11e3-914c-1fbd0614e2d4_story.html\">Loudoun Valley squeaked by William Byrd 3-1<\/a>, setting up a 3-A East rematch with Poquoson, who downed Tunstall.\u00a0\u00a0 In the final, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/baseball-jack-degroats-gem-gives-loudoun-valley-first-virginia-state-title-since-1972\/2014\/06\/14\/b0cd8d06-f33d-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html\">Loudoun Valley won their first baseball title<\/a> since 1972 with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/loudoun-valley-baseball-wins-first-state-title-since\/article_3e660c2c-f421-11e3-8dc7-0019bb2963f4.html\">9-1 blitzing<\/a> of regional foe Poquoson behind a complete game 4-hitter from <strong>Jack DeGroat<\/strong>.\u00a0 Loudoun Valley finishes the year 25-3.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-2014-2A-bracket2.pdf\">2-A<\/a>: Regional Champs Strasburg, Virginia High and runner-ups Madison County, Randolph-Henry.\u00a0 Uneducated prediction: Strasburg wins the title.\u00a0 Results: Virginia High advanced to the final behind a no-hitter from <strong>Austin Miles<\/strong> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcyb.com\/sports\/virginia-high-honaker-advance-to-state-baseball-finals\/26480090\">blitzing 12-0<\/a> over Madison County.\u00a0 Meanwhile Strasburg advanced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/06\/rams-roll-past-statesmen-advance-to-state-champion.php\">beating Randolph-Henry 6-1.<\/a> In the 2-A final, Virginia High won its first state title since 1966 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvdaily.com\/sports\/2014\/06\/rams-fall-short-in-state-championship-game.php\">beating Strasburg 7-2<\/a>.\u00a0 Virginia High finishes the year 25-4.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/doc\/upload\/base-results-2014-1a2.pdf\">1-A<\/a>: Regional Champs Northumberland, Honaker and runner-ups William Campbell, Auburn.\u00a0 Uneducated prediction: Honaker wins the title.\u00a0 Results: the two regional champs advanced easily to the state final, where Northumberland easily beat the previously undefeated Honaker 9-3 for the state title.\u00a0 Northumberland finishes the year 23-2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2014 Virginia State HS champs<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6-A: Western Branch (Chesapeake) d Chantilly 6-4.<\/li>\n<li>5-A: Hickory (Chesapeake) d Douglas Freeman (Richmond) 6-4.<\/li>\n<li>4-A: Hanover (Mechanicsville\/Richmond) d Millbrook (Winchester) 7-1.<\/li>\n<li>3-A: Loudoun Valley (Purceville) d Poquoson (Newport News) 9-1.<\/li>\n<li>2-A: Virginia High (Bristol) d Strasburg 7-2.<\/li>\n<li>1-A: Northumberland (Patuxent River) d Honaker (South of Roanoke) 9-3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good year for Chesapeake Schools, who took both the biggest classification titles. \u00a0Hanover out of Richmond &#8220;defends&#8221; its state title, though in the 4-A classification, leading many to wonder if they could have competed in the higher classifications. \u00a0The best performance by a local team remains Purceville&#8217;s Loudoun Valley, winning the state 3-A title. \u00a0With apologies of course to Chantilly, who surprised this observer by knocking off Cosby prior to pushing Western Branch despite hits un-lofty record. \u00a0I think its safe to say we&#8217;re all bummed that Bukauskas couldn&#8217;t finish out the year; I would have liked to have seen him against the two down-state 5-A powerhouses.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Recent Virginia AAA HS champs<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>2013: Hanover d Great Bridge. Hanover&#8217;s super-junior <strong>Derek Casey<\/strong> (committed to UVA) outlasts Great Bridge and their 1st round talent <strong>Connor Jones<\/strong> (now attending UVA after spurning a likely late 1st round draft position).\u00a0 DC Local teams Lake Braddock and Oakton beaten in the semis.<\/p>\n<p>2012: Lake Braddock d Kellam 4-0. Lake Braddock lost to West Springfield in the regional title game but then ran to\u00a0a state championship.<\/p>\n<p>2011: Great Bridge d South County in the state final, giving the powerful South County its first and only loss on the season after starting the season 28-0. \u00a0Lake Braddock was the regional finalist and lost to Great Bridge in the state quarters.<\/p>\n<p>2010: West Springfield d Woodbridge in the final, giving Woodbridge its only loss on the year. href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/pilot\/sports\">Hampton Roads Pilot<\/a>\u00a0(Hampton Roads) has scores for teams in the Chesapeake\/Norfolk\/Va Beach area. \u00a0They also have their own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2013\/03\/rankings-top-10-high-school-baseball\">top-10 rankings<\/a>\u00a0for area teams.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/sports\/high-school\/\">Baltimore Sun&#8217;s high school page<\/a>\u00a0has information on some of the programs outside the DC area mentioned in the Maryland
