Photo via dukechronicle.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the third year running (here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=6877\">2013&#8217;s wrap-up<\/a> and here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=8996\">2014&#8217;s wrap-up<\/a> of drafted local players) we&#8217;re going to keep an eye on &#8220;local&#8221; draft prospects leading up to the 2015 amateur draft. \u00a0By &#8220;local&#8221; I essentially mean anyone who hails from the DC\/MD\/VA areas plus anyone who is playing their college ball here.<\/p>\n<p>To compile this list, I looked at rising college juniors and rising prep seniors who made impacts in 2014 or who\u00a0 have made a name for themselves with summer league performances in 2014.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a link to the WP&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/sports\/highschools\/2014\/spring-all-met\/baseball\/index.html\">2014 all-Met team<\/a>, which had more than a few juniors, all of whom are mentioned here. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectgame.org\/events\/Rosters.aspx?event=2280\">roster for Perfect Game&#8217;s big summer 2014 showcase<\/a>, which is the first place a lot of rising prep seniors get scouted.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballnews.com\/2014-high-school-all-americans\/\">Louisville&#8217;s 2014 All-American selections<\/a>, looking for junior all-american nominees.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/canesbaseball.net\/Bulletins.asp?MyTeam=251799&amp;org=canesbaseball.net\">EvoShield Canes 17U Roster<\/a>, the leading travel team in the area and where a number of these upper-end prospects played this past summer.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballdraftreport.com\/\">BaseballDraftReport blog<\/a> that has been doing some tracking of prep players ahead of the 2015 draft.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s Fangraphs&#8217; <strong>Kiley McDaniel<\/strong> &#8220;way too early&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/blogs\/2015-mlb-draft-top-51\/\">draft rankings from Oct 2014<\/a>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s BaseballAmerica&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/2015-draft-clear-1-college-arms-dominate\/\">first 2015 draft ranking<\/a> from Mid Oct 2014.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s minorleagueball.com&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorleagueball.com\/2015\/1\/12\/7528383\/early-2015-mlb-draft-rankings\">early 2015 draft<\/a>&#8221; prospect list.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s USAToday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/usatodayhss.com\/2015\/2014-15-american-family-insurance-all-usa-preseason-baseball-team\">pre-season HS all-american list<\/a> (though there are no local first teamers).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Local Prep Names<\/strong><\/span> to keep an eye on for 2015&#8217;s draft:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cody Morris<\/strong>, RHP for 2014 3-A state champion Reservoir HS (Fulton, just south of Columbia). \u00a02014 All-Met, 2014 Louisville All-American, Maryland Gatorade player of the year.\u00a0 He&#8217;s committed to South Carolina but a repeat of his 2014 season could have him rising up draft boards. \u00a0Played for EvoShield this summer and was at the PG National showcase event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A.J. Lee<\/strong>, a SS\/RHP for 2014 WCAC\/DCSAA champion and Washington Post final 2014 #1 team St. Johns (DC) who hails from Millersville. \u00a0He was also named to the 2014 all-Met team and was a 2nd team Louisville All-American. \u00a0Lastly he was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/recruiting-insider\/wp\/2014\/05\/28\/gatorade-awards-three-area-pitchers-with-player-of-the-year-awards\/\">DC Gatorade player of the year<\/a> in 2014. \u00a0He&#8217;s committed to Maryland.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connor Eason<\/strong>, LHP for\u00a02014 Virginia 5-A state champs Hickory (Chesapeake). \u00a0 Also played for for EvoShield this summer and is a UVA commit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John DeFazio<\/strong>, OF\/RHP for Madison HS (Vienna). \u00a02014 All-Met, committed to Virginia Tech.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brody Cook<\/strong>, INF for Riverdale Baptist. \u00a02014 All-Met, committed to VCU. \u00a0Played for Demarini Stars this summer.\u00a0 On BaseballDraftReport&#8217;s pre-2015 season watch list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nathan Eikhoff<\/strong>, who plays for Patriot and was a 2014 All-Met after hitting an astounding .541 in the spring season. \u00a0UVA commit. \u00a0Played for Demarini Stars this past summer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Harvey Logan<\/strong>, C for 5-A state runner up Douglas Freeman (Richmond). \u00a0He was at the PG showcase, played for EvoShield and is an early commit to Wake Forest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jordan Carr<\/strong>, P for Archbishop Spalding (Severn, between Annapolis and Baltimore). \u00a02nd team all-met in 2014.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ljay Newsome<\/strong>, P for Chopticon (south of Waldorf), 2nd team all-Met in 2014.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stevie Mangrum<\/strong>, 3B for Western Albermarle HS\u00a0(Charlottesville), was at the PG Showcase. \u00a0Committed to Va Tech and played for EvoShield this summer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kaleb Bowman<\/strong>, RHP for Woodgrove (Purcellville), honorable mention All Met for 2014, played for EvoShield this summer and verbally committed to South Carolina.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Danny Blair<\/strong>, CF for Gilman (Baltimore), committed to South Carolina, played for EvoShield and was at the PG National showcase.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evan Sperling<\/strong>, RHP for Grafton (Yorktown\/Newport News), committed to UVA and played for EvoShield.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nathan Trevillian<\/strong>, RHP for Amherst County HS (near Lynchburg), committed to Liberty and was at the PG National showcase.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grant Donahue<\/strong>, RHP for Decatur HS in Berlin (outside Ocean City). \u00a0At the PG National showcase, played for EvoShield, committed to UVA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hunter Parsons<\/strong>, RHP for Parkside HS in Salisbury, committed to Maryland, at the PG National showcase and played for EvoShield. \u00a0 Up to 93 on the gun at showcases.\u00a0 Could show up on draft boards with a couple more ticks on the gun.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paul Hall<\/strong>, LHP for Maury HS in Norfolk. \u00a0Committed to Virginia Tech, up to 90 on the gun, played for EvoShield.<\/li>\n<li><strong>James Monaghan<\/strong>, 1B for LaPlata HS.\u00a0 Committed to Campbell, played for Evoshield&#8217;s regional 17U team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hunter Byrnes<\/strong>, 2B for GW-Danville.\u00a0 Same HS as last year&#8217;s 4th round pick <strong>Blake Bivens<\/strong>.\u00a0 Good athlete (also a star QB) who may not get drafted but could be a good Div-1 player for someone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I give a lot of weight to playing on the Evoshield Canes, as you can see.\u00a0 If a guy is on that team, odds are he&#8217;s playing Div 1 somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Local College draft-eligible players<\/span><\/strong> to keep an eye on for 2015: \u00a0(2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/2014-college-previews-all-america-teams\/\">pre-season Baseball America all-american<\/a> team link here, <span style=\"color: href=\"http:\/\/www.atlantic10.com\/pdf9\/2722768.pdf\">All Atlantic-10<\/a> College Baseball team. All Big South, All Conference USA teams.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mike Matuella<\/strong>, RHP from Duke (via Georgetown Prep HS and Great Falls, VA).\u00a0 Burst onto the scene in 2014 and is in the mix for 1-1 overall already.\u00a0 Huge guy (6&#8217;6&#8243;) with a huge arm (sits mid-90s).\u00a0 Upper 1st round projection ahead of 2015 season.\u00a0 Baseball America <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/college\/dukes-matuella-rested-ready-season\/\">had this feature<\/a> on him ahead of the season in mid January.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/indians.scout.com\/story\/1518749-2015-mlb-draft-profile-rhp-mike-matuella\">scout.com report<\/a> from 2\/19\/15.\u00a0 He missed a start with a minor injury early on (thanks to persistent 30-degree weather in the area), but has come back and as of the time of this posting has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goduke.com\/fls\/4200\/stats\/2014-15\/baseball\/teamcume.htm\">0.44 ERA<\/a> through 20 innings\/5 starts for Duke.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nathan Kirby<\/strong>, LHP from UVA (via James River HS in Midlothian) who was a first team all-ACC, 2014 Golden Spikes semi-finalist, a BA All-American, ABCA All-American.\u00a0 Projected top 10 first round pick pre-2015 season.\u00a0 So far into the college season, Kirby has lived up to his billing, holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiasports.com\/sports\/m-basebl\/stats\/2014-2015\/teamcume.html\">3-1 record with a 1.16 ERA<\/a> as UVA&#8217;s friday starter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joe McCarthy<\/strong>, OF from UVA who hit in the middle of UVA&#8217;s order in 2014 and was named All-ACC.\u00a0 Projected mid 2nd round pick by BA ahead of 2015 season.\u00a0 McCarthy <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/12250547\/joe-mccarthy-virginia-cavaliers-back-surgery-expected-miss-12-weeks-season\">suffered a back injury<\/a> prior to the season&#8217;s beginning and will miss the first 12 weeks of the season; he&#8217;ll have precious few looks to get his draft stock up prior to the Rule 4 draft.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon Waddell<\/strong>, LHP from \u00a0UVA. \u00a0UVA&#8217;s #2\/Saturday starter was 9-3 with a 2.57 ERA on the year in 2014. \u00a02nd-team All-ACC.\u00a0 So far in 2015 he&#8217;s gotten hit though, holding just a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiasports.com\/sports\/m-basebl\/stats\/2014-2015\/teamcume.html\">3.48 ERA through 6 starts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Clarke<\/strong>, College of Charleston&#8217;s Friday starter and breakout 2014 player, hailing from Ashburn and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/after-tommy-john-surgery-and-leaving-towson-taylor-clarke-stars-for-college-of-charleston\/2014\/05\/22\/4db07cac-e0fe-11e3-810f-764fe508b82d_story.html\">featured previously in the Washington Post<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 So far in 2015, he&#8217;s only improving his stock, holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cofcsports.com\/fls\/14800\/stats\/baseball\/2015\/teamcume.htm\">55\/8 K\/BB ratio<\/a> through his first 39 2\/3 innings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Josh Sborz<\/strong>, RHP from UVA (by way of McLean HS). \u00a0UVA&#8217;s #3\/Sunday starter in 2014 but has been re-assigned as UVA&#8217;s closer in 2015 in favor of former Virginia prep standout <strong>Connor Jones<\/strong> entering the rotation.\u00a0 Thus far at the time of this posting, Sborz has 5 saves but just a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiasports.com\/sports\/m-basebl\/stats\/2014-2015\/teamcume.html\">3.00 ERA through 18 innings<\/a> across 11 appearances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John La Prise<\/strong>, inf from UVA who hit .358 in 2014, but who has only played in 4 games thus far in 2015.\u00a0 He is on Minorleagueball&#8217;s preliminary 2015 draft list, but he was <a href=\"http:\/\/virginia.247sports.com\/Article\/John-LaPrises-health-will-dictate-UVa-batting-order-35572145\">fighting injuries<\/a> prior to the season and may still be doing so.<\/li>\n<li>3 sophomore All-CAA players from William &amp; Mary: Catcher\u00a0<strong>Ryan Hissey,\u00a0<\/strong>DH\u00a0<strong>Charlie Gould<\/strong> and RHP\u00a0<strong>Joseph Gaouette.\u00a0 <\/strong>Thus far in 2015, Hissey and Gould <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribeathletics.com\/fls\/25100\/data_import\/files\/bsb\/2015\/stats\/teamcume.htm\">have picked up right where they left off<\/a>, but Gaouette has yet to appear for the Tribe.<\/li>\n<li>Some draft eligible players from U-Maryland: <strong> Alex Robinson<\/strong>, LHP, <strong>Jake Drossner<\/strong> LHP, <strong>Lamonte Wade<\/strong> LHP\/OF.\u00a0 With Maryland&#8217;s rising national ranking (#11 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.d1baseball.com\/rankings\/d1baseball-top-25-rankings-march-23\/\">3\/23\/15 d1baseball.com<\/a> rankings), these guys will continue to see their stock rise.<\/li>\n<li>Smaller college guys like <strong>Kyri Washington<\/strong>, OF at Longwood and <strong>Dylan Nelson<\/strong>, RHP from Radford.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Did I miss anyone?\u00a0 I&#8217;m all ears.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the third year running (here&#8217;s 2013&#8217;s wrap-up and here&#8217;s 2014&#8217;s wrap-up of drafted local players) we&#8217;re going to keep an eye on &#8220;local&#8221;
