Last post covering local baseball for 2019; this one tries to summarize all the various “Player of the Year” announcements from various shops, both local and national.
I kind of ran out of gas on this one; fighting through a dozen different paywalls and I never could find the official announcements of Virginia regional all-player lists. But this is still a pretty good summary of the various POTY lists.
Individual Player Accolades Announced
In addition to being playoff-baseball time, this is also the time of the year that we start to see player awards. I’ll put these in as they publish, but we won’t expect most of these until the end of June.

Past awards that no longer seem to be in existence:
- Louisville Slugger All-Americans: last awarded in 2016.
- National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) POTY: last awarded in 2017.
- Under Armor All-Americans: perhaps there used to be selections, but now there’d just a game mid-July of mostly rising senior all stars.
- USA Today/American Family All-State Teams and POTYs: stopped doing state-level all-state baseball teams for 2019.
Jake Agnos had a terrific junior year for ECU and got drafted by the Yanks in the 4th round. It will be interesting to see if his younger bro is as good.
Hope you’ll have a chance to post on the Nats again soon. I’m beginning to think this may be my favorite Nat team ever.

Todd — Sorry for the tough sledding. Hope you’re at least getting to watch the Nats. I do love this team, even with the nightly bullpen adventures. Friday night was yet another roller coaster ride, and clutch comeback. I know Rendon probably won’t win MVP with two guys threatening 50 HRs, but the Dodgers would have made the playoffs even without Belinger, and the Brewers are sinking despite Yelich. Rendon is absolutely the “most valuable” Nat.

Todd, whenever you can crawl out from under life, I think we’ve got a new contender for top 10 Nat games of all time. To borrow from the SEC, the epic 11-10 comeback win over the Mets “just means more” since it’s in a pennant race.
This is really starting to feel like a special team. I know the season could still end in a one-game WC loss, or in yet another NLDS against a stacked Dodger squad. But I love this year’s team, probably more than any other Nat team, even the scrappy 2012 bunch.

I agree. In fact i’m already editing the “greatest nats games” post that i’ve had in draft mode for a while. Its been several years since i published an iteration of it, may be time.

And down the stretch we come, the last eighth of the season. It seemed a long shot that the Nats could challenge the Braves for the division, but that’s completely dead now, 9.5 games back with 20 to play. The Nats should be in good shape to hold onto a wild card slot, but 17 of the 20 remaining are against teams over .500. The final three could really have a playoff feel if both the Nats and the Indians are still fighting for wild cards.
